Coach Jon Gruden expects Cadillac Williams to play against Atlanta on Sunday, but just in case, backup running back Michael Pittman is prepared to step in.
Pittman took the bulk of reps at practice Thursday with Williams nursing a sore back.
“We need everybody because the more talent the better,” Pittman said. “Cadillac is a great talent on this team and we have to have him out there to win games. But people always get hurt. Right now, I believe he probably could play if he had to, but we’ll see what happens this weekend. If he doesn’t play this weekend, I’ll be ready to go and just play my game.”
Gruden said Williams’ back spasms aren’t related to the heat. He was pulled from the Baltimore game in the second half when his back problem flared up, a problem that also occurred the first day of training camp.
“Obviously, this is not something that has just gone away over night like maybe we had hoped,” Gruden said. “We held him out today. Hopefully he gets a good night’s sleep and the day’s rest helps him.”
In other injury news, tight end/long snapper Dave Moore has been downgraded to doubtful with a rib injury. Backup long snapper Doug Jolley likely will handle those duties against the Falcons. Starting middle linebacker Shelton Quarles (groin) and left guard Dan Buenning (ankle) remain questionable.
