Bulger To Be Benched (1 Viewer)

He had 2 drops, one may not have been catchable, but the other clearly was, on which both, he jumped and leaned back instead of going straight up. Watching it, both times, I got the impression he was trying to put on a show, and it cost him two catches.Anyone else get this impression tonight?
IF this is true, which i strongly doubt that it is, its ONLY because of injury.

Hmm they also touch on the OC job changing hands.. I'm not sure if this is new news or not, but it's new to me. I wonder if this helps out Holt/Bruce any.

If Linehan takes back the playcalling duties, I would think there'd be a bit of a bump for both.

he's got cracked ribs. he's a QB. his Oline is in shambles. his starting RB is out. his team's season is over. he has no business playing until he's 100%. hate to say it, but at this point, the Rams are playing for pride and draft position. it doesnt matter whether or not the source is credible. common sense leads us to believe that Bulger reallly shouldnt play for 3 weeks.

Rams coach Scott Linehan confirmed Monday that Marc Bulger will start against the Cardinals in Week 5.

"He is our quarterback, so if he’s not in the game, we feel like were not giving ourselves the best chance to win," Linehan said. Bulger will continue to play through two broken ribs. Linehan admits it might've been in the team's best interest to have started Gus Frerotte and given Bulger Week 4 off to heal.

Bulger's benching is directly related to Ocho Cinco's showmanship. Isn't it obvious?

The only reason that Bulger would be benched would be because of injury. This article made it seem like the jus thought Gus would be a better player inury or not.

Not sure if benched is the right word here, since he is injured and clearly hasn't been himself since he cracked the ribs. Arizona has a pretty good defense and pass rush, and it would be pretty silly to put your franchise QB back there with a decimated o-line and no RB threat.

Even if Frerotte plays well, Bulger probably steps back in when he and S Jax are healthy.

But what does your quote have to do with Marc Bulger?

 Bulged WILL be the QB when healthy. He isnt "benched" hes "injured".

Bulger benched; Frerotte to start

By Jim Thomas

ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH

10/03/2007

In an abrupt about-face, Rams coach Scott Linehan is going with Gus Frerotte as his starting quarterback Sunday against Arizona and benching injured Pro Bowler Marc Bulger.

On both Sunday and Monday, Linehan gave Bulger a strong endorsement, saying Bulger gave the team the best chance to win despite playing with two broken ribs and would start Sunday against Arizona.

But on Tuesday, Linehan informed Bulger that he would sit for a week or two.

According to sources close to Bulger, Linehan told him sitting would give him a chance to let the ribs to heal and for the Rams to possibly get some injured players back on both sides of the ball.

Frerotte, 36, relieved Bulger in the second half of last week’s 35-7 loss to Dallas, completing three of six passes for 29 yards.

Frerotte started 15 games for Linehan in 2005 in Miami, when Linehan was offensive coordinator for the Dolphins.

the problem with that theory - which seems like it should make sense - is that the rams were actually better on offense after linehan gave up the playcalling last year. the poster North can tell you about that.

So just to be clear here: PFT got it right. Again. You can argue the semantics of "benched" all you want, but the bottom line is PFT was the first to break that Bulger will be on the bench.

Looks like PFT is a better source than the Belleville News Democrat.

 Benched is more exaggerated than "forced to rest".

don't even bother, too many people have a hate for PFT to even try to make people understand that it's a reliable site

i chalk it up more to jealousy that a joe blow lawyer sitting around was able to work his butt off and make some very reliable connections within the NFL industry and is now making something of his blog.

the same guys that bi*ch about PFT, are the same ones reading it everyday.

at this point do you drop bulger?

I mean he comes back week 7 or 8 lets say, playoffs are a distant hope and the line is still wrecked.

My question is, do you bother picking up Ferrotte? I'm thinking not as the Rams are in shambles, but having Holt to throw to is still enticing.....

With Favre playing like he is is I just bailed on Delhomme and picked up Frerotte. hoping he will see me through Favres bye week before the Rams make any switch back... :popcorn:Edited to add: I have been enduring Holt's "production" in this league as well. Maybe Frerotte will give him a shot in the arm.

This is GREAT news IMO for any Rams owners. We all need Bulger to get healthy. He's useless in his current state. Then, when he's more healthy and SJax is more healthy and the team is down 20+, Bulger can get back to hurling the football all over the field effectively.

The oline can only get better IMO, and he WILL be back behind center once healthy. Also, this is a rib injury - 100% chance of healing in a few weeks, unlike Delhomme's elbow or Smith's shoulder. Look at the 2nd half schedule - very tasty.

Bottom point, is FREROTTE worth picking up? And if he does well does Bulger get his job back when he is healthy?
He's 35 and a backup for a reason. See Griese in Chicago for a reference, but with a worse oline. That said, I HOPE he does well, but I'll take a wait and see.As far as Bulger vs Frerotte: Frerotte is 35. Bulger is a proven stud when healthy and protected. The moment Bulger is ready, he takes over. And with broken ribs, it's not "if" but "when" he's back. Should be 2-3 weeks max.

Problem here is, why are they benching him, sitting him, resting him. Is it really because of his broken ribs??He broke his ribs in week1 game against Carolina, but had no problem in week 2 - 24/41 368yds 1 TD, not so sure just because of the injury, seems more involved with this so call benching/resting. Being 0-4 does funny things to a coach! But signing that new contract in July and being the 2nd highest paid QB in the NFL, maybe it just resting.

Methinks you're reading WAY too much into this. As a Bulger owner, I was BEGGING for them to bench him and let him heal. He's been a shell of himself with the combo of no SJax, no oline, and 2 broken ribs. That's circumstances, not a bad QB. But when healthy, there's no question who the QB will be. It's not like he had Cutler waiting behind him...

Huh, this may be a good buy low opportunity. Anyone think making offers for Bulger now is wise? If so, what type of value is he commanding?

Frerotte is 36, but still one of the best backup QB's.

Also wanted to ask, what's the general time frame for broken ribs to heal? 3 weeks? 4? More?As someone else said, if Bulger sits while the OLine continues to get healthy, then he's not taking a pounding. 3-4+ weeks from now the OLine could recover, Sjax is back in action (backup isn't too bad either), and Bulger comes back and we may see the Rams start producing again.

Bigger question is what will he be listed as on the injury report?
Interesting question. Linehan was on Sirius NFL Radio's Late Hits tonight and said that Bulger will still dress and be the emergency QB, as the team only has 2 QBs on the roster. He said Bulger would only play if Frerotte were injured and couldn't go. So the goal is obviously to rest Bulger, though he will be available if needed. And not to hijack/derail the thread but I didn't think this warrants its own thread - he said (and I'm paraphrasing) that he's not ruling out Ike Bruce for this weekend because of how tough a guy he is but he feels that the Rev is realistically a few weeks away. Based on this Bennett may be worth a short term pickup. Linehan also commented on Gus and McMichael's chemistry from the Dolphins days but didn't say Randy would necessarily get more involved, as he has had to help block due to the devastating O line injuries.

With that OL etc I think it's time to bail, esp if you can get someone like Anderson or Harrington (never thought I'd say that what a year)
