To be fair i want to say they were 6-3 heading into the bye last year. I am still skeptical of them.6-2 record with a team that was 7-9 last year.

Difference is they're winning without Calvin. To be fair i want to say they were 6-3 heading into the bye last year. I am still skeptical of them.6-2 record with a team that was 7-9 last year.
An error has occurredYou have reached your quota of positive votes for the dayThe noticeable difference is that a Caldwell coached team doesn't beat itself and that's half the battle. The composure is a direct reflection of this coach.
It took this team way too long to find a WR not named Calvin JohnsonBiggest add-on this year was Tate. HE is the difference in this team.
Yes. The schedule has also been very kind and the last two wins were gifts thanks to the opposing playcalling. With the remaining 8 games, I expect them to go .500 and finish 10-6.Biggest add-on this year was Tate. HE is the difference in this team.
Yeah, it's fair to be skeptical, I agree. To be fair i want to say they were 6-3 heading into the bye last year. I am still skeptical of them.6-2 record with a team that was 7-9 last year.
going for it at mid field was not the right call, the punter shanking it was terribleNobody sends out the punt team in a big spot like this guy.
Did you just have a stroke?Didn't like the hire when it happened and the result was about exact as was expected: took a roster with a great deal of talent on offense, resulted in reducing the high octane, eliminated immediately in the playoffs.
If a step above mediocre is what you strive for, good hire. What I WILL say they did good I this hit sis they completely got rid of the bs, drama, etc. he's a professional coach, he's a good guy. He's not a dynamic coach that takes teams to Super Bowls
That high octane offense from 2013 didn't even make the playoffs, and they blew leads in several games resulting in losses. This year they won several games where they had to come back from behind, and some were without Calvin Johnson. The Lions from 2013 wouldn't have done that.Didn't like the hire when it happened and the result was about exact as was expected: took a roster with a great deal of talent on offense, resulted in reducing the high octane, eliminated immediately in the playoffs.

Sounded good back then. The noticeable difference is that a Caldwell coached team doesn't beat itself and that's half the battle. The composure is a direct reflection of this coach.
But they also played a much easier schedule in 2014 compared to 2013. Their 11-4 record was a mirage. Next year's schedule will be much tougher still. I really didn't like the hire at the time and still don't like it.That high octane offense from 2013 didn't even make the playoffs, and they blew leads in several games resulting in losses. Disagree with your criticism there. You have a 3 point lead and one of the best defenses in football. Punt the ball and play to your strength. Put the pressure on Romo. Even after the horrible punt Dallas still had to convert a 4th and 6, 3rd and 7, and a 3rd and 8 on that game winning drive. And even after all that, Detroit still got the ball with 2 and a half minutes left. In short, an awful lot had to go right for the Cowboys to win there. If you want to criticize Caldwell, criticize the play calling on the 3rd and 1 (the phantom pass interference call). Don't get cute there. You've been moving the ball effectively. Just hand it off on 3rd and 1 and milk the clock further and likely convert it that way.Nobody sends out the punt team in a big spot like this guy.
Weren't they on like the 41 or something. They were definitely inside the 50. Even a good punt might have rolled into the endzone for a 20 yard net.going for it at mid field was not the right call, the punter shanking it was terribleNobody sends out the punt team in a big spot like this guy.

He's mainly known for being a robot. Was Caudell always this much of an ### in Indy? I have heard his last 2 press conferences on the radio and I can't stand the guy.

Agreed, he was a big improvement over Schwartz. Schwartz had a pretty talented team play well below its talent level for years. With Caldwell as coach the Lions are more disciplined and played up to their ability.Caldwell was a vast improvement over Schwartz. But is still only a medocre NFL coach. Less than half the NFL coaches are smart enough to know not to punt in that situation.
What is prescription cotton? Is it softer than the regular stuff? If you cant get one yard with the biggest game of the season on the line, you dont deserve to win. Caldwell didnt even try. Dont defend his conservative playcalling. He has been doing it all year. Getting a small lead then milking out the clock. No killer instinct whatsoever and Dallas climbed out on top. Suck it Detroit fans. Your coach is softer than prescription cotton.
I was saying...I could have done what he did with the Colts. As could anyone else. The only thing he managed to do was hold the offense back by punting instead of going for it, FGs instead of TD attempts, etc.A guy that led his team to 14-0 and to a super bowl in his rookie season gets zero respect by fans, which is amazing.
But I'm in agreement with the general consensus. This guy, to me, looked absolutely clueless on the sidelines.
Welcome to continued futility, Detroit.
But at least they'll make Stafford happy.![]()

How would this work? You're suggesting teams should hire a guy whose only job on game day is to be chief decision maker? And you would expect the head coach to defer to this assistant?I think we just have to accept at this point that Caldwell is a poor man's Andy Reid: good team manager, terrible game manager. He made a fantastic hire in Austin, his players all seem to love playing for him, and other than the one year where he had Curtis Painter and Dan Orlovsky as his QBs, he's won pretty consistently. (And just stop it with the, "I could coach Peyton Manning to 14 straight wins" BS. First of all, you couldn't. Second, the fact that Peyton called the Lions up last year and strongly recommended Caldwell says a lot in my book.)
It does raise an interesting question, though: Why must we simply accept that coaches like Reid and Caldwell are bad game managers? Why don't they recognize it as a weakness and hire an assistant who specializes in just that?
No, I didn't mean "Special Assistant in Charge of Clock Management and Challenges", I meant, for example, make sure you get an offensive coordinator who's particularly good at that kind of stuff. Kind of like a CEO who's better at the big picture stuff hiring a COO who loves managing all the small details. How would this work? Well, that would make for some interesting dynamics.
MOP for President!Worst HC I have ever seen. Guy was a buffoon running the Colts into the ground. That SB trip was a joke, Manning did everything there. Caldwell lasted 3 seasons?
Terrible hire, very sad day for Detroit fans IMO, sorry.
Actually own PraterJust picked up David Akers![]()

While this is true, the 49ers QB makes Stafford look like Johhny U.A stat line of 9/19 for 67 and 4 ints, 2 of which went for 6... He could be your QB, so technically it could be worse. Regardless, neither situation is enviable. I assume both clean house if the season progresses as anticipated.Last I checked 49ers have a win and beat the Vikings. Lions got smoked by the Vikings
