Going to the Winter Beer Festival this Saturday in Grand Rapids, MI (2nd time going)

If you are bored and want to check out the list of brews that will be there and let me know which ones I MUST TRY... have at it..

Warning, it's a long list..

I'm not opposed to try anything, but I'm kind of a beer sissy and lean towards a lager much more than a stout..

Kuhnhenn Brewing Co. (Warren)

Imperial Crème Brule Java Stout (even if you ARE a sissy :P )

Blueberry Eisbock

I've been told Hopslam is amazing. They were delivering here for a short time but could never get my hands on some because it would sell out instantly.

Had some last weekend for the first time. Never see it around here so grabbed it while I could.

It was awesome.

That's a pretty incredible beer list for a beer festival. I like that all of the breweries are breaking out their rare and barrel-aged releases and not just showing up with a few flagships. My Michigan beer knowledge is probably a bit rusty since I haven't lived in that region in a few years, but here are some of the beers that stand out to me:

Bell's Chocolate Covered Cherry DCS Barrel-Aged Stout

Bell's Hopslam

Dark Horse Bourbon Barrel Plead the 5th imperial stout

Founders Backwoods *******

Founders Doom

Founders KBS

Founders Bolt Cutter

Hopcat Fornicator bourbon barrel-aged dopplebock

Jolly Pumpkin Yuzu Gose

Kuhnhenn Imperial Creme Brûlée Java Stout

Kuhnhenn Bourbon Barrel 4D

Kuhnhenn Bourbon Barrel Barleywine

Kuhnhenn Blueberry Eisbock

New Holland Dragon's Milk

Short's Bim Bam Boom

Short's Bourbon Carrot Cake

The Livery Funkalicious Sour Barrel Aged Wild Ale with raspberries

The Livery Woodford Reserve barrel-aged Bop Gun

The Livery Grand Reserve Verchuosity

My list kind of skews towards double IPAs, bourbon barrel-aged imperial stouts and barleywines, and sour wild ales, but those are my favorites. You'll probably need to mix in some lower ABV beers to make it to the end of the festival.

The site is blocked for me at work but the list above looks GREAT! Have fun!!!

wish I had bought tickets to this....
They were a pain to get.. sold out in less than 3 hours and the site was a joke.. kept crashing and timing out..

That being said, I'm looking forward to this... we meet at a local bar for bloody marys in the morning and then we take a "party bus" so we don't have to drive.

didn't the ballpark burn down where this is going to be held? I know its held in the parking lot but the stadium is right there...

No.. the suites on the first base side and the top parts of the stands below them burned down... but this is held in the parking lot. They said the fire in no way affected this event at all, but the TONS of snow has put a crimp in the parking..

So they are encouraging people to car pool.. and will be using a lot a mile away and shuttling people back and forth...

I wish I was going to be in town. I'd meet you for the bloody mary breakfast.

I tend toward IPAs, so if you can't stand the more hoppy beers you might not like some of these. I'm sticking mostly to the Grand Rapids area beers here because they're the ones I've probably had the most.

* Brewery Vivant Love Shadow Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Stout is really good (if it's the beer I'm thinking of.)

* Founders All Day IPA is a low ABV IPA that is really, really good. If you like IPAs, of course. I can drink these all day. The Centennial IPA is a little more drunky but equally as delicious. You can't really go wrong with just about anything from Founders or HopCat.

* Founders KBS is basically the Elixir of the Gods.

* HopCat Fornicator. Haven't tried this one, but I recommend it anyway because that name is awesome.

* HopCat Son of Hoppo

* I've never been disappointed by a beer from the North Peak Brewing Co. in Traverse City. On that list I've had the Diabolical (awesome) and, I think, the Vicious.

* Perrin Brewing Co: I don't think I've tried any on that list, but I've had 2 or 3 of their different beers and they've always been good.

* Petoskey Brewing Co: The North 45 is good and I've heard good things about the Petoskey Sparkle.

Have fun brother.

I must try Kuhnhenn Blueberry Eisbock...I recently drank my last bottle Rasp Eisbock from a case I bought back in '06...

Damn, just read the Blueberry had a limited bottling and isn't available...I wish I had known about it, I would have had a buddy pick me up a bottle.

Local brewery I sometimes hang out at will be there: Liberty Street. Plenty of good beers, Majesty bourbon barrel aged imperial stout is good, as is their regular Starkweather Stout.
