Calling Packer Backers- A. Rodgers' remarks (1 Viewer)

The magazine asked Rodgers “whether he feels pressure to connect with the fans the way Favre did.”

“I don’t feel I need to sell myself to the fans,” Rodgers responded. “They need to get on board now or keep their mouths shut.”

Reached by telephone Tuesday afternoon, Rodgers wanted to immediately clear up any misunderstanding with the team’s fans.

“I do care deeply about the fans and I think anybody who has been to training camp sees a lot of times I’m the last one out signing autographs. I care about the fans; I care about their opinions,” Rodgers said. “Everybody wants the fans to care for them and to pull for them and I am no different.

“The biggest disappointment in this whole thing is if anybody is offended, because I think that my track record pretty much speaks for itself in the way I feel about the fans,” Rodgers reiterated.

Interested what others might feel about the situation. Not really fantasy related, I know, but wondering what other Packer fans feel about this. When I first heard the quote I said "who the F--- do you think you are Aaron Rodgers? How about this- stay healthy for 4 continuous quarters of play and then open your mouth"

In my opinion, fans have every right to "not be on board" with Aaron Rodgers, he hasn't done anything except get hurt. The fact that he says this and then quickly takes it back goes to show that he's got a fire and is getting tired of all the talk/criticism. I like that he's got a fire, but shut the fans up on the field, not in the media.

Personally, I'm a bigger fan of Brohm, but I'll give Rodgers his fair shot. He's got 2 years to prove his case. He's a solid fantasy choice this year though, especially with all the critics to silence

Does being the one to replace #4 suck or what. How many "Favre wants to return" stories are we gonna have to endure?

Seems like no one in GB can move on from the Brett Favre era. Im starting to feel for Aaron Rodgers. There is no way he can get a fair trial in that state... Dead man walking.

Like following Elway and Marino - Rodgers will not be the only dead man walking in Green Bay - it will take at least a SB run to put Favre in the background

Who the F--- do you think you are Warriors Forever?I'm a lurker and Favre apologist but at the same time theres no reason to dump on ARod2 for this. He's been handed the keys and despite the "solid" Mort reports about Favre coming back, theres no reason to believe the team and/or the fans aren't behind him.I agree, lets give him 4+ quarters to prove himself but this BS speculation is beyond ridiculous./soapbox/thread...this is just stupid

Depends on how empty Chris Mortenson's calendar is between now and late August.

Good for Rodgers. I applaud it. The GB fans should perhaps wait and see what this guy can do. Will he be Favre, no. But will he win games, probably.

The thing is, as someone born and raised in Packerland, it goes like this:

"I support the GB Quarterback no matter what they say and almost wihtout exception no matter how they do on the field."

Don't forget, Packers receivers are saying that QB Aaron Rodgers has a stronger arm than Brett Favre.

You make it seem like a choice or something...it is like if the Pope says something you don't agree with.

So I say, "You go, Cal-boy".

The fans are the one group of people Rodgers (I refuse to call him that ridiculous nickname) needs on his side. This remark came BEFORE all this Favre BS. As if he doesn't need the fans on his side. News flash Aaron, the fans are the most important group to win over. The year after Favre retires, the fans are going to be brutal and (as said above) have high expectationsMy "who the f--- do you think you are A. Rodgers" remark was soley made because he's dumping on the fans and acting like he's already proven himself. Yes, give him 6 games and then if the fans aren't on board they can shut up, but he hasn't STARTED a game yet and he's acting like he's "the man". I understand, living in Favre's shadow the last few years, GB spends a 2nd round pick on an NFL startable QB, Favre rumors, I know it can be frustrating, but not real classy to take a crap on the fans.
Arod2?Are you effin kidding me?

Same here. Good for Rodgers.
The sentiment might be easy to get behind, but he's set himself up for failure with the quote as there will be any number of fans who are waiting for him to fail so that they can utter the retort, "Give us a reason to get on board." This is Brohm as the backup is going to be the most popular guy in Green Bay by the halfway point in this season.

The Favre b.s. has never stopped for Rodgers and probably never will. Rodgers has been peppered with Favre questions since day 1 and has handled it really well up until this last comment. I have no problem with it since it pretty much is true.

Any fan waiting for Rodgers to fail just once in order to make a retort isn't much of a fan in the first place.

There's gotta be more than just this line. Looks like this one sentence has been taken out of context. Would like to see what was said immediately before and after.

Or like following Montana? Seems Steve Young had some haters but by and large people loved him. Heck, most Niner fans will admit Jeff Garcia was pretty solid and he followed Steve Young. Let's face it - if the qb plays well, fans will embrace the new guy no matter who they're following. Winning wins people over. If Rodgers is mediocre (or worse) then heaven help him because the fans will be less tolerant than a Ravens fan.

I think even Peyton Manning and Tom Brady would have a hard time replacing Brett Favre (and I think both are better than Favre, even when he was in his prime). The "legend" of Brett Favre is even greater than Favre himself (and he was a great QB).

I have no issue with this comment at all. Rodgers is going to play like Aaron Rodgers. There are those fans that will always pine for the good ol' days with Brett. And there are those that will move one. It's not Rodgers job to suck up to them or ask them to like him. He wins games, they're on board. Pretty simple. That doesn't mean he has to ask them to like him right now.

The simple reality is that he will be loved if he wins and hated if he loses. If the latter, I agree fans will likely remember his words and, if the former, the quote will be quickly forgotten. I recall very well sitting at Lambeau in the early 90's hearing the chants for Holmgren to bench Favre for Ty Detmer. Few will admit to it today, but that was a strong sentiment in the Emerald City over the course of two full seasons.

Um, ok, it's 'human nature'....for a certain kind of human. (Namely, an #######...)

Personally, I dig the kid! I dig the attitude, and the moxie. He has all the talent around him...and if he can produce solid numbers and wins...we are going to be allright. Will he be Favre? Who in the NFL actually could that's playing today, or tomorrow. We have a solid line, RB, and young stud WR's, with a Def as well. Sounds like a good recipe for success to me.

I'm human. So are the guys I watch and talk football with and the majority of the people I chat with on Packer message boards. Very few of us, if any, will be quick to change our opinions about Rodgers after one bad performance. It's just a difference of how we're defining "fan" here. The average Packer fan that can only name a few players on the team, lives and dies Favre, and is quick to jump on and off the bandwagon is not someone who's opinion I care to hear. They're not real fans as far as I'm concerned, and they're the sheep that continue to eat up whatever the media puts on their plate.

Rodgers isn't frustrated by the Favre talk, the Packer fan's whining or the drafting of Brohm. He's frustrated b/c he wouldn't have throw the rookie-like interceptions that have ended the last few seasons for the Packers. Favre has one Super Bowl (thank you Jacksonville for beating Denver) and a bunch of horrible post-season exits (vast majority his fault). Packer's fans love a myth!

Brett Favre was equal to Fran Tarkenton.

Packers fans should hope they have a Troy Aikman in Aaron Rodgers.

BTW, all of you TURN OFF ESPN!

Except for the "able to play football without getting hurt after 5 minutes" thing. If a black guy said this the board would be freaking out.

Rodgers could have used better word choice, but I agree with the spirit of his statement. Packers fans need to realize there have been 42 Super Bowls and Favre's won one of them. So have lots of other QBs. And so will one of their future QBs.

So get over it.

No starting QB in the league, needs to tell the teams fans to sit down and shut up. Beyond being a complete moron, "fan" "chatter" happens everywhere. Sorry he's not universally loved after being hurt twice after 8 snaps. He's dominated so much on the field it's shocking the fans are not 100% supporting him.Fact is Brohm is probably a better QB, he can never live up to Farve, and he's getting pissy at all the fans talking about it. It's called being a starting QB in the NFL. You're a multimillionaire, deal with it. Stop listening to sports talk radio if you can’t handle fans voicing opinions. These grossly rich jocks can't handle some offseason banter about the QB position. Ohhh poor him. What a baby. The fans don't need to do anything. HE needs to actually make it through an NFL game healthy.

I'd need to see the quote in context (which will be tough to find because the media has their story in one line) but my take on it was he was telling to fans they need to move on from Favre, not so much jump on the Aaron Rodgers Hype Machine. I'm sure the lead in to the question was something along the lines of "Following the legacy and legend of the great Brett Favre, do you feel that your job is even tougher than most QBs and you have to sell yourself to the fans?"Again, I'd need to see the full context, but I'd be shocked if the question that elicited that quote wasn't the final in a series of 20 Favre-related questions.ETA: Based on original blog link above, this is the alleged lead-in:
And here's the money quote from Rodgers, who is asked whether he feels pressure to connect with Packer fans the way Favre did. Says Rodgers: "I don't feel I need to sell myself to fans. They need to get on board now or keep their mouths shut."
Given that, I even have less of a problem with what he said.

"keep their mouths shut". Funny how I don't hear many starting QBs ranting about that. Did Brady ever tell Pats fans to shut their mouth? Manning? Elway? Any current starting QB in the NFL? Last one I remember was Vick giving the finger. What Packer fans are the worse? Rodgers needs to wake up. This is normal. Expected. Life as the starting QB. Romo's girlfriend can't come to games because she's cursed. Fans are unrealistic, deal with it.

Another thing is the tone of how that quote was delivered says a lot, and it rarely translates to print. Heck, just a few weeks ago Brady cracked a joke about still not being able to lift a lot of weights or jump high, and the AP runs out saying he's still hurt, when it was clear to those there it was a joke.Rodgers very well could have been putting on a bit of comical bravado. I'd be surprised if it was said in any kind of ire. More likely a mix of confidence and cheeky bravado. As I stated before, it was poor word choice, but the kid probably hasn't been given many interviews as a starting NFL QB and he's just learning what you can and can't say. Should he be more thick-skinned and probably not care? Sure. But easier said than done.Either way, it's a fairly mundane thing for folks to get their panties in a bunch about.

Rodgers wasn't referring to all Packer fans, just those who weren't "on board" with him being the QB.

This is just silly. The fans don't ever not attend games. Rodgers does get me, as a lifelong Packer backer, on his side with quotes like this. He needs to take the bull by the horns and he is doing it. He's ready to continue the Packers legacy as the dominant team in the NFC North and one of the best in football. He'll bring them to the playoffs this season. The only doubt i have about Rodgers is his injury questions. Talent wise he's fine, probably in the top half of starters right off the bat.

Exactly. One of the biggest falsehoods being floated out there by the national media is how life in Green Bay has ended and all Packer fans should be on suicide watch now that Favre has retired/unretired. That couldn't be further from the truth. A large % of Packer fans are excited for the Rodgers era to begin and are sick of the should I stay or should I go act.

Wow...I don't even know where to begin with this ignorant rant.

Packer fans know what he meant. He chose a stupid way to say "get on board" but we all say stupid things at times. We're ready for a new era of QB and offense in Green Bay. If it isn't Rodgers hopefully Brohm will be ready. Most still love Favre but it is time to move on.

Adding

Rodgers is like Steve Young with the Niners. He's waited patiently and deserves his chance.

Sick of Favre and his act or sick of the media reports and fan scrutiny of Rodgers?I was mainly refering to all the comparisons to #4 and the media reports that he wants to return to the Packers. The whole thing is nuttier than squirrel sh**
