Cam Newton vs. Colt McCoy (1 Viewer)

In 4pt passing TD leagues Cam should have a substantial edge on a per game basis, otherwise they are very close with Cam a slight lead.

On a per start basis (and a total basis) Vince Young rookie season outscored Matt Ryan's 2nd year. Young I feel is the best physical comp for Newton and Ryan is an optimistic 2nd year comp for McCoy.

At this moment in time:

Redraft Leagues - Colt, but it depends on his ADP and how far he slips in my draft for value (I won't reach to take him)

Dynasty/Keeper Leagues - Cam Newton just because his upside is considerably more then Colt

Check back in another week or two, as I want to see how Cam does as a starter this week playing with the 1st string guys

So Colt McCoy is running away with this ...yet he's being drafted seven spots after Newton. (178 vs. 171)

Not terribly unusual, IMO. Newton's upside this year is high, if he wins the starting gig and starts all 16 games. His downside risk is also considerable, being a rookie with no starting guarantee. Colt is the safer pick for more points this year but his ceiling is fairly low. I went with Colt for the expectation that he'll start 4-6 games more than Newton this year, so his year end totals will be higher. I expect that Newton's pts/gm will be higher than Colt's, but not enough to make up the difference in games.

I'd expect that these poll results would shift significantly to Newton if he lights it up in preseason and is named the game 1 starter.

Then maybe you should ask a different question...Colt is more likely to score more points and will take more snaps, but in a standard 12 teamer neither is going to be my starter.I might draft Newton first because...1. At the end of the year he may be producing better than Colt. I'm more likely to need a back up QB later in the year.2. The Cats have a schedule more favorable to rack up passing numbers.3. Some might think Newton's rushing numbers will be high.4. Newton will have more trade value if he puts up a stretch of numbers like Tebow did last year.

I should have known the newton backers were going to come back with the ppg or late season performer nonsense

Regardless, I am pleasantly surprised that the shark pool seems to get this one

I'm not surprised at your lack of reading comprehension. Please point out a "Newton backer" (yes, Newton is capitalized in schools outside of Arizona) that actually backed Newton.

Lhucks,

McCoy doing well in camp and being tutored by Farve has been played up on ESPN and other sources. Anyone who's been paying attention the last week or so, McCoy is trending to some degree on people's QB list. So to compare him to a Cam Newton, a rookie in a tough spot, it doesn't surprise me at all that people are favoring McCoy over Newton.

BTW, when I took McCoy later in PDSL, I think you gave me grief for it.

He makes so many outlandish statements that he can't keep track of them. I do have to give him credit for recognizing all his bad calls in the past and taking a new approach in 2011. He pretty much takes both sides of a discussion in different threads so he'll be right 50% of the time.

I think CAR has much better weapons around Newton and as was said previously an easier schedule. Not to mention the weather for later season games will be better in CAR. I like Newton vs. McCoy.

Colt McCoy is no slouch when it comes to running.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=htpJjUAdkbohttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hAyiN-8Nr00http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7bokbhwcFIQ
He is pretty good at running. Basically 1/4th as good as Cam Newton

I could see McCoy putting up 3 or 4 td's and 300-400 yards similar to Rodgers. What do you think Newton's running stats will look like assuming 16 games?

i love that 1 argument was that Cam has much better weapons..? lol. Sounds like a tallest midget contest to me. If we are talking about RBs then yes CAR has the edge, but CLE RBs are hardly slouches. I think the WR core is closer than you think, given the TE play CLE may even have the edge. Lets talk about O-line.. And not to mention I think CAR will be playing from behind all year so they will not have the luxury of running the ball 40 times a game which would be the ONLY strength in this argument where Cam would be able to utilize his running skills. The Browns proved last year they are able to stay in every game even leading most games well into 3rd-4th quarters. Having the full use of the playbook will allow Colt to outproduce Cam

I voted Colt.

Colt proved last year that he can play in the NFL. He should be improved from last year. Cleveland has a good running game and OK WRs. In the west coast O, Colt should be able to rack up plenty of completions.

Cam is a rookie QB in the NFL. That is tough spot to be in. Lots of "great" college QBs have failed miserably in their transition to the NFL. I am not saying Cam is going to fail. I am saying that I am not even thinking of drafting him in a redraft league.

It was a joke as Cam's 1 year rushing from last season is almost as good as McCoys 4 year totals. 16 game totals I think Cam is looking at 500-550 yards, 4-5 TDs. TDs is tough with their running game but Chud was the O-coordinator in CLE during DAs big year and he had 3 rushing TDs so he is willing to use a big bodied QB to push those last few yards.

I'm one of the bigger Newton backers on this board, and took him in multiple rookie drafts this year, but for this year, redraft, Colt by a few rounds. Cam is improving quickly as a passer but is so raw, I think he will have a difficult time in the league this year. He'll continue to improve his passing over the next couple years until he likely turns into a repeat top 10 FFB QB, and he may run for enough yds and TDs that he puts up some pretty good games this year, but you are hoping Newton shines and outperformes Colt based on physical abilities and upside. For a #2 or 3 QB, I want the guy I feel has the higher floor and that is easily the Browns' QB. I think the Browns are being undersold by quite a bit, have improved their D, shaped a pretty decent O line and have a very good and underrated running game. Coaching there has improved by leaps and bounds and while McCoy isn't a prototype, he seems to get it. Plenty of very good QBs have not had big arms, or weren't physically imposing, but had it between the ears and I think he's one of them. The west coast offense being used in Cleveland is much more friendly to QBs with the mental game vs QBs with the physical game and I expect McCoy to outperform Newton in 2/3rds to 3/4ths of the games played this year. Newton could very well put up a couple monster games this year and finish close to Colt in total points for the season, but neither of these guys should be regulars in your lineup and the odds of hitting on those big games are slim. For a #2 or 3 QB, you want the guy you can count on to put up solid yet unspectacular points while waiting for your #1 to return from injury or bye, just to give you an opportunity to win based on RBs and WRs points, and to not lose for you by putting up <5 point stinkers.

I'd give a very slight edge to Car receivers but its close. You have to give the edge at WR1 to Smith(Car) but Clevelands at WR2 and WR3 give the edge to Little and Robinski/Cribbs. TE Olson(Cr) and Watson(Clev) are a wash and RBs Hillis(Clev) and Williams(Car) are also even IMO. I voted McCoy but then I play in a couple of 6 point passing td leagues.

so how do you expain the "experts" ranking Cam ahead of McCoy?or Cam's higher ADP?

It appears the vast majority of ffers are getting this catastrophically wrong...embarrassing really.

I don't try to use expert ranking for anything other than determining if I can ask for more in a trade for one of my players. I haven't seen any experts that I trust more than my own eyes and my own gut. Not saying I am better than them, but also not saying they are better than me. I have no interest in "explaining" their rankings for players, but if they say that Newton was better for redraft than McCoy by a couple rounds, then I know that I can likely trade Newton away to the McCoy owner and ask for a little kicker in return.

I think that's most of us around here.

Thanks for assuring Cam a HOF career.I've already explained "why" on the higher ADP. Remember the reason you didn't like Moreno last year? That's the logic being employed by many people.

i just wait for you to post predictions, and then do the opposite

I don't suspect this will be very close. McCoy should kill Newton this season. In fact, I like McCoy better for the future, as well. He might be the most underrated QB in FF circles right now.

There are some references to Newton's upside as being one of the deciding factors between he and McCoy, and that seems legit to me... but what do you guys think McCoy's upside is this season?

Seems likely that most see his upside as being somewhat limited, maybe due to a lack of weapons on the CLE O or Colt's less-than-ideal size and arm strength. But if things lined up perfectly for Colt to have a big 2011 season, what type of numbers would we be looking at?

Just don't see it happening. Finishes with @Cin, Bal, @Pit, @Ari, @Bal, Pit. I see lmited scroing opportunities down the stretch. The schedule is more favorable earlier in the year, but I don't see a lot of shootout games to rack up stats.Newton on the other hand will have NO, Atl, Tam lighting up the score board on two occasions each. GB, Ind, Det, Hou will are also capable of posting big numbers. I can easily see 8 games where the Cats are down by 14+ at halftime and Newton is given the green light to toss it around most of the second half of these games.

Cam could run for 8 TDs by accident.
That's about how many he'll pass for.
In most scoring systems 8 rush + 8 pass TDs works out to be equivalent to a 20 passing TD season. You think McCoy is good for 20 TD passes?Cam won't pass for much more than 2000 yards either but factor in rushing yards being 2-5 times more valuable than passing yards in virtually every scoring format and he looks to have some value. They should finish pretty close to each other in total points.
