MIAMI — He came from the left. He came from the right. He came from the CFL.
On Sunday, Cameron Wake kept winding up in the Buffalo Bills' backfield.
The 27-year-old rookie sacked Trent Edwards three times to help the Miami Dolphins earn their first win of the season by beating the Bills 38-10.
Wake signed with the Dolphins in January after totalling 39 sacks in two seasons with the B.C. Lions. He didn't play in Miami's first two games and saw limited action a week ago.
But with pass rusher Joey Porter out, the Dolphins turned Wake loose.
"I've been waiting a long time for this," Wake said. "It has been a long road to get to the NFL. To go out there and get my first NFL sack and to win the game, you can't ask for much more than that."
Playing as a linebacker in nickel and dime packages, Wake was part of a defensive charge that totalled six sacks, came up with three interceptions and limited the Bills to 46 yards rushing. He turned out to be a spectacular replacement for Porter, slowed by a sore hamstring that forced him to miss a game for only the seventh time in his 11-year career.
"One of our leaders was down ... one of our fallen soldiers," Wake said.
Even with Porter, Miami's pass rush had been spotty in the first three games, all losses. But the Bills had trouble blocking the Dolphins - especially Wake.
"That's what you lie in bed at night dreaming about - coming around the corner and hitting the quarterback," he said. "I've been waiting years for that. It's impossible to describe the feeling."
Wake had the game's first sack on the opening series, forcing a fumble that the Bills recovered. He added two later sacks and also tackled Marshawn Lynch for four-yard losses twice.
Jason Taylor added two sacks and Randy Starks one.
The Dolphins moved Wake around, lining him up on both sides opposite Taylor.
"That's why they brought him in - to get pressure off the edge," Bills tackle Kirk Chambers said. "He has incredible speed."
Miami coach Tony Sparano described Wake's performance as "validation." The Dolphins led from early in the second quarter and used five or six defensive backs much of the game, with Wake part of those packages.
"The kid showed what he's got," Taylor said. "I've been around a long time, and he does things that amaze me."
