Can the 49ers beat the Packers in the playoffs? (2 Viewers)

And the Packers won three games on the road in last year's playoffs. Either way, SF is the type of team that could give the Packers a tough time in the cold in January at Lambeau.It's way to early to tell who could beat who in the playoffs. It often comes down to who is playing the best ball at the end of the season.

The 2011 49ers remind me of the 2001 Steelers. Those Steelers won 13 games and had HFA. Their weakness was Kordell Stewart. They couldn't ask him to win a big game with his arm in the 4th quarter. Once the Patriots had a 4th quarter lead over those Steelers in the AFC title game, it was over. Kordell threw some picks and the Patriots went to the Super Bowl.
In their victory over the Giants today, they just hung on for the win. That didn't answer the question "Can Alex Smith orchestrate a 4th quarter comeback with his ARM against a good team in a pressure game?" The way Harbaugh has called some games, I don't think HE believes Alex Smith can do it. They might be one-and-done in the playoffs actually, if they trail late.

Can? Sure. Is it likely? No. But I remember this team from last year. The fact they've come so far in one year to have threads like this makes me say this season is already a success.

A lot depends on the health of Frank Gore. With their defense and a healthy Gore, I think they at least have a good chance to control the clock and keep Rodgers off the field for large stretches of the game. Can Gore get the through the second half of the season, though?

Not sure why, but that hadn't occurred to me thus far (probably because it's been so long since I've thought about the Niners being involved in the pointy end of the season, too early to think ahead yet).Nobody will ever dispute who the better QB is, but if Smith's Niners were able to beat Rodgers' Packers it would go down as one of the greatest football stories in some time.Personally I think they'll blow us out the water, but as Dr Awesome stated above, the mere fact we're even discussing this means that this season has already been a success.

Man if they meet in the playoffs the media will beat that story to death and back.In all seriousness though, I actually think the Packers wouldn't mind playing the NFCCG in California, losing the #1 seed to the 49ers doesn't seem like the end of the world to me.

Both are the top of the league right now.Probably depends where the game is played and injuries before then. But I do like that SF has the running game and defense to play keep away from Rogers.

Remember when the Culpepper/Moss/Carter Vikings played the Dirty Bird Falcons? The way you beat the Packers is to keep that offense off the field and shorten the game. I don't think Smith is the heart of the Niners - its Captain Comeback - Harbaugh.Also, I think home field is a big deal for the Packers. Hard to audible on foreign turf. They have an elite offense and the team relies on it to score. It would make things much harder for them to be in SF.

Defense wins championships - but GB offense is going to be tough to stop. SF could slow it down - then the question is can the Niners score enough to win. That is what I am not sold on. Their defense is championship caliber with guys like Willis, Justin Smith, Bowman, etc. Their offense is not so great. I vote they can beat them - but I don't know if they will beat them.

Does the week 6 game at 5-0 Detroit not count where he led the game winning TD drive with less than 2 minutes left in the 4th? How about the 20 point 2nd half comeback at the Dream Team Eagles week 4? Smith has shown he can do it but because his passing stats aren't gaudy, he'll always be questioned. But as long as the Niners keep winning I don't care.

As a 49er fan, I still don't think we can. They don't really have a running game as it is which is our strength at defense. As seen by this game, our secondary is mediocre. Rodgers will tear it apart. And while the Packers defense isn't great, I'm pretty sure they can stop ours, especially in a shootout

The game winning drive vs the Lions was interesting because 1. It was a short field. Ted Ginn Jr., had a 40 yard punt return to set up at the DET 35.2. The 49ers went with almost ALL running plays.1st-10, DET35 5:29 K. Hunter rushed to the right for 9 yard gain2nd-1, DET26 4:51 F. Gore rushed to the right for 1 yard gain1st-10, DET25 4:09 K. Hunter rushed to the left for 9 yard gain2nd-1, DET16 3:35 F. Gore rushed to the right for 9 yard gain1st-7, DET7 2:58 F. Gore rushed to the right for 3 yard loss2nd-10, DET10 2:15 A. Smith passed to M. Crabtree to the left for 4 yard gain3rd-6, DET6 2:00 A. Smith incomplete pass to the left4th-6, DET6 1:51 A. Smith passed to D. Walker to the right for 6 yard touchdown. D. Akers made PATThat actually tells us Harbaugh DOESN'T trust Alex Smith to throw the ball in that situation. They almost completely took the ball out of Alex Smith's hands.The Eagles game kinda fails the test because1. There was little pressure on the 49ers to perform.2. The Eagles are a bad team.I remember hearing similar defiance from Steelers fans. They defended Kordell fiercely until they dumped him. You might be too close to the situation.

Did you even watch the game? The game plan of the niners all game was for Alex Smith to throw the ball. Frank Gore ran for a total of 0 yards, and Hunter basically only had the one TD run. Everything else was through the passing game, including the TD pass to Vernon in the 4th quarter to give the niners the lead. Forget the 4th quarter, this entire game was a pressure game, and Alex played well. This is also now the 4th game this season where the niners have trailed entering the 4th quarter and have come from behind to win the game (Eagles, Lions, Bengals, Giants). Come up with a better excuse. Alex will never be at the same level as Rodgers, Brady, etc. but he's not so terrible that he'll single-handedly sink the niners and invalidate the legitimacy of the team. We just beat the main competition for the #2 seed in the NFC with our "workhorse back" gaining 0 yards on the ground. I don't know how you can use this game as an example of Alex's shortcomings.'Fensalk said:

Of course they can beat them...several teams can...especially with the Packers D struggling. But their offense gives them a chance against any team anywhere they play.
As for Smith...not sure anyone is saying he sucks. Just that he is still unknown how much he can do and if he can really lead this team. He won't get tested as much with that schedule...nor will they get tested against an offense as potent as GB's very much.
BTW...you want passer rating talk outside of Smith and well, look at Rodgers rating.
But to see rating as a crap statistic, look at Tebow's yesterday.

Yes, because they have a solid Defense and the packers D blows. All it takes is for a few turnovers/onsides etc and with the ground game San Fran possesses they can take the air out of the ball and limit Rogers time to make the plays he's used to making. Any time you have a class A defense and running game you have a shot when the playoffs roll around. Not to mention that a playoff game in GB in cold elements generally favors the running & play action based teams more than a 4 wide set offense like the packers use more often than not, and the packers RB game is suspect at best this year.
Actually the Detroit games tells me the exactly opposite of what you conclude. Look at it logically...you have the ball at the opponents 35 with 5:29 remaining. You're goal here is to score a TD and leave the as little time as possible on the clock. Step 1 is logical, run the ball and get that clock moving. They bust of a 9 yard run. Next step is logical. Run again and try to pick up that first down to keep the drive alive. Success, so far no reason to put the ball in the air. You find yourself in the same situation except at the opponents 25, so again you run the ball to keep the clock moving. And get another 9 yards. Again no real reason to pass here, just run the ball, pick up the first down and keep the clock going. Now you're in the same situation you started except at the oppenents 7. So you run again, this time it's stuffed. Now, if you're a coach that doesn't trust your QB, the simple play here is to run again and let the clock run down to the 2 minute warning. Instead he lets Alex throw, and it's completed. 3rd and 6 here, a coach that doesn't trust he quarterback may select to run some sort of draw here, instead he lets Alex throw again. 4th down, it's an obvious passing situation with no real choice to run the ball. It looks to me like the ball was taken out of Smith's hands because they were having success running the ball. When the run failed on first and goal, the ball went entirely into Smith's hands. As for the Eagle game, I'm not sure how you come to those 2 conclusions. Eagles were in a pretty much must win game there. Sure they were 1-2 at the time, but those 2 losses came by blowing 4th quarter leads to 2 pretty good teams.'Fensalk said:

A 49ers vs packers game would be very reminiscent of the 99 rams vs. titans in the superbowl that year. Nobody gave the titans much of a shot to win, but that game came down to the wire. It would be silly to write off the niners as obvious underdogs.

No they haven't, and they won't until at least the playoffs it seems. They don't play a single team that has a defense ranked higher than 12th in PPG allowed. 10 of their 16 games will be against teams that are currently ranked 20 or worse.
