Can you negotiate with DirecTV? (1 Viewer)

Maybe I missed earlier posts, but it doesn’t seem like you’re following the script.  If you just do what everyone else did none of those other things matter. I was in a 2 year contract. Called and said cancel, they quoted me those same fees, I said ok thanks bye. I called back 5 minutes after the cancellation and got the deal and no fees.
Thought I owed you a thanks after following the exact script today.

Used the 870 phone number after setting the cancel date. DTV did email me yesterday saying they found that I was mistakenly placed in a 2 year agreement, when it was actually 1.

It was night and day difference dealing with woman at the 870 number. She even said the people at Mas Tech (or the 1800DIRECTV phone number) had no authority to offer much, which is why I was told twice that "if I wanted my bill lower, canecel HBO or remove a DVR".

Pretty sure the reps you contact at the 870 number are answering calls at home fwiw - just based on the background noise.

Anyways, I set cancel date for next Wed. Called 870 number and said I missed a call from this number (I didn't), and said I assume since you answered the phone "this is DTV" then it must have been regarding my cancel of the service.

Sunday Ticket Max (told her I just want redzone channel). $200 gift card, Choice package, 2 DVRS with whole home genie. No contract (I said I need this in writing). $24.47/mo with zero contract. Added in HBO and Starz, $43.47/mo.

Thanks, I would have cancelled without some of the comments here. Still - it's frustrating having to go through this every year. The reps at Mas Tech are terrible, this must be an outsourced call center with strict rules and little power to give any discount.

What I have learned: DTV does not operate the same as they did prior to the AT&T acquisition in regards to customer retention. I asked several times when calling the 800 number, "am I speaking to customer retention/loyalty?" and the answer from them was always "yes". This is clearly not the case. Amazing how one person can throw you so many discounts and free stuff that I keep my sub, despite being so angry at MasTech. I was shocked the way the rep was talking to me when calling the 800 number and saying cancel service. Those people they transferred me to were rude and basically insulting my intelligence with "cancel hbo - there's your deal, your bill is lower".

Nice to have the TV situation in order. Hope I don't have to jump through as many hoops next year, but I sort of doubt it. Office of the president was useless this year.

Hmmm we have the option to pay for the Ticket in 6 installments, right?  So if I cancel my entire DTV service after the 1st installment is paid would I be good or would they find a way to make me pay the rest I wonder.
They tell you right up front that you can't cancel after the season starts.  They repeat it several times.

So bizarre how people always have such different results every year.  I just had my easiest year of negotiating ever and didn't have to actually cancel.  I had cancelled Sunday Ticket a few weeks ago and just watched the free preview last week.  I'm still under contract until August of next year.  I called and said "cancel service", I asked her what my cancellation fee would be because I didn't want to pay for Sunday Ticket Max so I was thinking of bundling my TV with my Fios internet to get red zone.  She told me she could give me regular Sunday Ticket for free this year but it would cost $17 x 6 months to upgrade to Max and she could give me $25 off my bill for 12 months to offset it.  So basically without any haggling at all, I got ST Max for free and bill is 8 bucks less the next 6 months and 25 less the 6 months after and then I will be out of contract next August.  I would've been happy just getting it for free.  Hell, I even would've paid the $17 x 6 months for it even without lowering my bill as its worth that to me, I just didn't want to pay $400 for Sunday Ticket Max.

On the phone now.  I have done this so many years.  First time doing it after the NFL kicked off.   So crazy that we have to do this every year.

Ugh, so tired of this game.    I actually would be better off I think to cancel after 20 years and just become a new customer.  A new customer would get my same package for half of what I am paying plus NFL Sunday Ticket along with gift card of 200 bucks.

Crazy that the most loyal customers don't get the best rates.

I called the normal line today - asked to cancel. We had 10 mos. left on a 2 year contract. I tried lying and said that I was told STM was included for two years. The rep very nicely said sorry, no. I said ok and set cancel for next Sunday. She went through what I would have to do as far as returning equipment and how much I owed for cancelling early. I just kept agreeing with her and then she said, "Well, since all you want is ST, I can transfer you to VIP so neither side has to go through the hassle of re-establishing your service." I agreed and after holding for a few minutes, VIP picked up and offered free STM and $53 of our bill for 12 mos. I haven't paid for ST since 2001.

NFL Sunday ticket max 377.94 free

Premier Package rebates

80 off for a year

300 visa card

Contract = none

FINAL BILL

138.98 Premier Package, NFL Sunday Ticket, MLB PACKAGE

But, I did have to threaten to cancel and this time I got my own VIP customer service rep.  Got his name and number to call directly in the future with billing concerns, discounts, and rebates.

Called as my bill arrived yesterday and our credits had expired.  Bill went from 110 to 160.

XTRA package with 4 TV's

Called regular customer service number and got a girl who asked a lot of questions, but couldn't do ANYTHING with my desire "to not make my wife mad when she sees how much our TV bill is now".  Told her that there is no way my wife will let me pay that much when we won't be home much of the fall due to our boy traveling for baseball and his nightly activities.

She said "let me transfer you".

Got transferred to a nice guy and the 1st thing he says is "you've been with us for 15 years, we should be able to find something".

$55 loyalty credit / month

$7 local sports credit since we have a boy who plays sports

Sunday ticket for free for 1 year and no automatic renewal (he says that is a pain in the butt)

$200 gift card to "take your wife out to dinner"

DONE.

15 minute call.

Seems like we're all getting similar stuff now...

- Called regular customer service number to put in a future cancel date 2 weeks out

- Called retention # 2 days later and said I missed a winback call

Ended up with:

- Bill down to around $57 per month

- Free NFL Sunday Ticket

- Free HBO for 1 yr

- No new contract

This is key I think. Really hope this same person that gave me their name/direct number will take care of me next year. It did not happen with the Office of the President I spoke with last year that gave me her direct number (never returned my calls).

I am curious, did you get this from calling the 800 number or was this the 870 number ("win-back" reps)?

870 number.

I have never had a rep give me their full name and direct number.  I kept the email with all the information.  We will see

Made the call to the 870# today and the **** was just magical. I had set up cancellation for the 23rd and called today pretending I had missed their call. The deals rained down down down:

Bill cut in half from $114 to $55 a month ( same channels/package)

Free Sunday Ticket Max

$300 gift card

No commitment

Grand total time on the phone for both calls to get this done was 15 minutes. Good luck with your calls, gents - may all your dreams come true.

Pretty crazy how different the reps are at the 1-800 number (MasTech call center?) vs the reps at the 870 number. I was floored by the way the MasTech reps had somewhat rudely told me "you are not eligible for any discounts and not possible to give Sunday Ticket for free or a discount. If you want the bill lower, cancel HBO and cancel one of your DVRs". I was banging my head against a wall with these guys at the 1-800 number until I dug a little deeper into this thread and found the 870 number.

870 number was just like I was dealing with the old DTV before AT&T bought them, felt like a valued loyal customer of 15 years. Huge monthly discount, free movie channels, ST Max, $200 gift card and zero contract.

Finally did this.  I called an old number I had in my phone.  877.999.1083  I won't go through the details but it took 1 hour and 14 minutes.  Latino gentleman.

Come to find I was paying $250 a month without HBO or MLB!  I only had two boxes/tvs and slow wifi.  Unreal.  I just never took the time to go through it.  Glad I did.

Here's where I'm at now.  $107 month for everything, which includes 3 boxes/tvs (added one, which I'm not paying for the actual box/genie @ $99, nor for shipping, etc).  Added HBO, and much faster internet (at $20 mo, down from $40).  But I nixed ST in the process.  So, gained a box, HBO and faster wifi and dropped my bill $143 a month.  But lost ST.

Haven't read through all the posts in here but I presume I'm still paying way too much.  The thing is, I didn't feel like I could get much further on this first call.  I'm good on the phone and grinded him down quite a bit from where we'd started.

I figure I'll call back in a couple weeks to fake cut service and when they exclaim that they just gave me all these deals, I'll start in on how I should've been at this level to begin with and how badly I was getting screwed prior, blah, blah, blah.  That should net me at least ST, maybe a gift card and hopefully another drop in my monthly rate as well.

Can somebody please give me a ballpark number on what I should be paying monthly right now?  I need a target for the next call.  Thanks!

I have Genie (w/DVR) on 4 tv's, HBO and ST Max for $43/month for a year.  I do not get my internet through them so I am not sure what they charge for that.

I hope this helps!

Thanks bill, that definitely helps.  Figured my bill was still way too high.  Basically, if we added internet ($20) to yours, you'd be at $63, have ST Max, and an extra TV on top of my deal for $107.  That's enough to make me call back and cancel in a couple of weeks, for sure.  My target will be $70.

So is this the number I should hit up when I do this? ---> 877.999.1083

Officially no longer a DTV subscriber for the first time in almost 15 years. There was no follow up call.

Oh well... terrarium TV and IPTV it is! Extra $100/mo into the retirement fund. :banned:

Sounds like you are paying for AT&T's internet service? DSL I guess? No idea what that charge is, but for solid internet access through a cable modem I pay $77/mo to Comcast (no TV, no phone service).

I think notoriousbill has a pretty good deal with that many dvrs. I pay $43/mo to DirecTV for 2 dvrs with the whole home genie bs, HBO/Starz, Choice package, Sunday  Ticket Max + $200 gift card. No contract.

$107/month for 3 "boxes" with HBO seems high. I'd shoot for $50ish/mo in my opinion.

What an operation these guys run. All the discounts I was offered magically disappeared so I  got on chat to ask what was up. Turns out that since I was offered the discounts  a couple of days shy of a month ago, they won't show up on my next bill until tomorrow. In the meantime, the amount it says will be deducted via autopay is wrong and the real amount will show up in a day or two. As an apology for the "inconvenience" they gave me another $32/mo. off for 6 mos.

Yes, I'm paying for AT&T's internet service. It's more than adequate, speed-wise, for me and they just upped it so I'm fine there.  And at 20 bucks a month, I'm good with it.

So the problem is the cable bill.  I'm paying $87 for the 3 DVR/genie/boxes with HBO. No ST.  That's gotta change.  I'm thinking more like 50 bucks a month, including ST (+ the $20 for wifi).

I'm not gonna go nuts until I get the best deal out there, I just want to be in the ball park of a decent deal.  I was really get screwed prior.  $250???  Damn.  If I can go from that down to $70 a month, while adding HBO and another box/genie thingy, I'm good.

If you are not in contract, and can cancel at anytime, I would set a cancellation date for the service for about a week out. Wait a couple days, then call this 870 phone number (it's a few pages back in this thread). When they answer "This is so and so at DirecTV", you just say you missed a call from this number, so I assume this is in regards to my DirecTV account I cancelled. The rep at this number has more authority to give discounts and will do far more than any rep you get from calling the 1-800-directv number. I'd just mention that you wanted to cut the cord and use a streaming service, and unless DTV can match that price, you are going to cancel. Rep should be able to cut your bill so low it's more cost effective to keep the service than sub to PSVue, YouTube TV, Sling, etc..

The reps at the 1-800-directv number are terrible now. I actually worked in a call center that did tech support for AT&T's dial-up ISP in the 90's. We were just told to get the customer off the phone asap, the call center was paid by the number of calls taken, so resolving the customer's problem was not the top priority. I get this same vibe from this MasTech call center that answers calls for DirecTV. They just wanted me off the phone and do not care if you cancel service.

Edit: 870.345.3640 is the number to call after setting a cancel date. Huge thanks goes out to the people in this thread posting the number back in August.

Huh, so now what?

All discounts are off my bill.  Called yesterday to cancel service, retention guy offered me Sunday Ticket but no discount.  Cancelled as of midnight last night.

Today I called both of the "winback" phone numbers in here.  1st guy asks why I cancelled, I told him.  He gave me an 800 # and said if anything changes to call that number.  2nd guy tells me my account shows active and has been moved to AT&T so I'll have to go through them with any questions.  AT&T girl tells me it is showing cancelled.  I ask her if there is any win-back offer or if I can speak to retention.  She says she is retention and there's no deals like that.  WTF?

Step 1 - Take the ugly dish off your roof, paint it green and plant tulips in it.  They grow back every year.

Step 2 - Embrace contract free streaming.

Spoke with someone last week and said I was thinking about cancelling if they couldn't get my bill down.  She said the retention department was closed, but they would call me back tomorrow.  Waited five days and never got a call. Called the 855 number.  Explained the situation from last week and she said she couldn't help me until I cancelled.  Gave me her number and told me to cancel my service, call her back and ask for her.

I did as I was directed.  Avoided the sales pitch to stay with the company (although I did accept the $20 a month discount off my internet service) and cancelled (about a 10 minute phone call).  Called her back and she pushed a few buttons.  Said she could knock off $70 a month.  I asked if she could do anything about the Sunday Ticket bill and she waived it.  Total of 20 minutes all together (10 with the guy trying to keep me and 10 with the angel who got my bill down to $63 a month).  No contract.

Haven’t missed it. Between Terrarium TV for shows/movies, and Kodi Solutions for live streaming of EVERYTHING, I’m good to go. Feels good to formally cut the cord.

The product and the price will keep me using it indefinitely, but omg the customer service is so bad. I’ve had to call like 5 times the last couple weeks to try to get things straightened out and you’re talking to someone who couldnt care less if your problem gets fixed or not.

I finally got a deal worked out for this year.

For background, I've done the fully cancel and reactivate process in the past. Had ST for 9 years and never paid for it. Last year, my account got all messed up when reactivated, and I had to spend a lot of time fixing it. Eventually, the Office of the President got involved and sorted things out. Big hassle, but I got my lowest price ever out of it. In the process, though, my credits didn't expire until October, so my timing wasn't in the last August timeframe to get another deal with ST.

As a result, I wanted to see if I could get a good deal before having to invest too much in ST since I've been paying for it. I wasn't going to cancel with too many credits on there. Tried that before and it didn't go well.

I tried talking to retentions a few times. They had nothing for me. The only thing I could work was the 25% off ST. Since I've been paying for, I took that deal.

Waited until my statement came with the last month of credits. At that point, when I finally set the cancellation date, I got the VIP transfer, but they said they had no offers. It's amazing how they'll let you cancel without offering you anything. Not a thing. Why even bother with this VIP thing? I've never gotten that before, but it seems really silly to even go through the process to not even offer a thing.

But we all know the drill here.

I then waited a few days and called the 870 number. My service had not cancelled yet. Bingo. Here's comes an offer. Got $85 off a month of the Xtra package for a year. No contract. As for ST, no offer there. It didn't seem like they had the power to do much there at this stage. That might be the big takeaway if you end up having to wait this late like I did.

However, after putting me on hold for maybe 5 minutes to see what else could be done instead of ST, they came back with a $300 gift card. Works for me.

For review, I was paying about $15 a month last year with 1 TV on a HD DVR, Xtra with ST Max included. Great deal. Lowest price I've ever had.

This year, I'm looking at 17 a month with same everything besides no ST included. To cover ST cost, which I have a 25% discount on, I get a $300 gift card. Another great deal.

From no deal to paying less than I did when I first signed up 9 years ago.

Obviously my bills are coming in for more than they were supposed to. I hate them, this is my last year, don't care if I'm offered $20 a month next year.

Just got off the phone on my way home.  Called the 870-345-3640 # and said I missed a call.  They said they could offer me my existing package (XTRA + the sports fee) for $54/month (was paying $85 previously) with zero commitment.  Wouldn't give me anything as far as gift card or Sunday ticket.  I really pushed the Sunday ticket thing saying that was the only thing that set them apart from cutting the cord.  I said, that it wasn't worth it for me; but if he wanted to talk to a manager and call me back to do so.  He said he would, although I'm not expecting it.

When it's all said and done, I will take that deal if I don't get anything better...and even if I buy the Sunday ticket max, it will still only put me out $4/month more than I was spending previously.

This time I called the 855-291-0398 # and got offered virtually the same deal, but with 6 free months of HBO and they said the Sunday Ticket promotions should be coming via phone and email soon.  Even without them I'm ahead of where I was last year due to the free HBO....if I get some sort of promotion for Sunday Ticket, even better.

So I don't think there's any method to what deals are offered, I guess it's just luck of the draw
I just called back to see if i could get anything in the way of sunday ticket.  They said i actually had a 2 year committment, which was BS.  they're taking care of that and giving me ST for free

When do they typically bill for Sunday Ticket? Curious as they bill my first installment in August but didn't get a charge on September bill. They had given me a ton of credits to offset charges already. If they somehow also forget to charge me for it that would be a great bonus.

Just had an issue with the baseball package. They had erroneously charged me back in March an extra debit, so I called and naturally wanted it removed. It took so long, that they then offered Extra Innings to me for free. Accepting that, I got an email stating that a credit had been issued which covered both the erroneous charge and the Extra debit. Well, my bill then showed the two charges again. I've spent months on this and they finally removed one of the charges, but said I wasn't getting Extra Innings for free. When they told me they didn't offer things for free, I scanned the email with the letterhead and emailed it to them. I then told them that their representatives (two of them) had assured me this wasn't the case.

Things began to get heated and I got disconnected. If Sunday Ticket worked on any other platform, I'd cancel out of principle. This sucks. What a bunch of lying, thieving jerks.

Does PS4 still do Sunday Ticket?

And any recommendations about how to proceed?

When they told me they didn't offer things for free, I scanned the email with the letterhead and emailed it to them. I then told them that their representatives (two of them) had assured me this wasn't the case.

Things began to get heated and I got disconnected. If Sunday Ticket worked on any other platform, I'd cancel out of principle. This sucks. What a bunch of lying, thieving jerks.

Does PS4 still do Sunday Ticket?

And any recommendations about how to proceed?
I left DirevTV after 12 years a couple months back.  If you don't mind paying ~$25/month, Id recommend using an IPTV provider.  I use onesteptv and you get about 600 channels, including Sunday ticket with red zone, the mlb, NBA and nhl packages, all premium movie channels, as well as all PPV events included.  You also get a huge on demand library with just about every movie and every episode of every TV show that you can think of.  You can do a one day free trial, you just don't get the premium content during the trial.  It's easy to setup as well, get a Firestick, download the app NoraGo and then sign up with a service provider and youre good to go.

Thanks. I'm really trying to figure out how to get the football package because cable has all the others and I think we'll still get cable somehow. Though I like the idea of cutting the cable and dish networks entirely.

If you're looking for the "Sunday ticket experience" but don't want to have to go through DirecTV, I'd say IPTV is going to be your best option.  The quality is good, Its been reliable 99% of the time this season and you still have a guide like what you're used to with DirecTV/cable.  The only other option I'm aware of is Reddit streams or something like that.

The other thing I forgot to include is that it also includes Netflix exclusive content, YouTube exclusive, Amazon exclusive etc.

I do have a couple friends who are running IPTV and kept a basic version of cable/DirecTV mostly for the reasons like what you're describing..... They just want the NFL ticket reliably, without having to scour online for streams, or they want the UFC ppvs, and it works well for that, as long as you don't mind the monthly fee.

Since I'm considering canceling my DirecTV, I tried the free trial of onesteptv. It's a great service but the picture quality is lacking on a really big TV. Looked great on my ipad though.

How big is your TV and what is your internet speed?  Our main TV is 60" and we have probably the slowest FIOS speed they offer.  There's been a couple times watching NFL games that things get pixelated but I've never noticed it watching anything else including NBA games, UFC fights and movies/shows.  Im glad you tried it out though.  I know there are a bunch of other service providers like Streamz, GNR and Insight that you could try out as well.

i called up directv and said lets negotiate and they said about what and i told them you have already lost by asking the first question and then i told them that they had made a grave mistake by making an enemy of none other than the ole swcer so when they call back i am pretty sure that they will give me free tv take that to the bank bromigos

this sounds too good to be true.  What's the catch?

I'm only a couple months in but I haven't come across anything deal breaking yet.  We dont have a DVR anymore, which took some getting used to, but shows are typically available in the On-Demand library within 1 day.  The thing that annoys me the most is being limited by the buttons on the FireStick remote; although you can get the FireStick Remote app on your phone which does work a little better.  There are also a bunch of channels that show up on the guide that I have no interest in watching and there isnt a way to filter them out.  But, as far as content and price, the service can't be beat.  The other poster said he experienced some quality issues but we haven't had any.

75" 4k. Speed is over 100mb. I did a direct comparison while watching the world series and dancing with the stars. DirecTV looked noticeably better. My wife agreed and she doesn't know anything about TV. It's too bad because I could save a bunch of dough

I wish I could be of more help.  I'm definitely a novice when it comes to cord cutting though.  I will say if you are watching your DirecTV picture in 4k, I definitely think it's possible you'd see a quality difference as I dont think any of the channels have that high a resolution.  The way IPTV works, you are watching someone else's screen who is broadcasting the channel to the service, so the quality will be capped by whatever the person streaming has.
