Can you negotiate with DirecTV? (2 Viewers)

Somewhat of a fail for me. I called to set disconnect date at around 7 PM tonight. Then called the 877 number at around 9:45 even though I hadn't received a phone call or e-mail offer. Said that I had received phone call while out mentioning the offer code and number to call back. No hassle from the agent I was speaking to but he could only cut my fee from the current $151 per month (premier plan already receiving about $25 in discounts that are set to expire in a couple of months) to $125 per month for the next 12 months. Not as big a reduction as other people have been getting but considering the fee would be going up to over $170 per month in a couple of months it will work out about the same. Agent told me it looked like I was already scheduled to receive Sunday Ticket for free this year, but I didn't believe it since I hadn't negotiated that discount yet, so he confirmed I will receive ST Max for free. Big disappointment was not getting $200 gift card. I pushed back on it and he supposedly checked and said that DirecTV sent them an e-mail today that they were no longer supposed to offer gift card. I told him it was listed in the phone message I received with the offer code and he said there was nothing he could do about it. Maybe I should go to their rebate web page and see if I can enter my info. there.

When they set that cancellation it's just like a hotel setting a wake up call. Anytime something is automated there's a chance it still goes through and you lose the whole dvr.
As was said earlier, the DVR data does not go any where.

My service was mistakenly shut off before my cancel date and the data was safe and sound when the service turned back on.

I waited a little over 24 hours - pretty much the same result. Others who have waited less have gotten the whole smear.

My gift card form is still not showing up under my "rebates". Am I looking in the right spot?

Guess I'll be calling back tomorrow about it.

Yes do that. That is how I had to get mine. It only takes two seconds to see if your are eligible.https://www.directv.com/DTVAPP/rebates/rebatesCenter.jsp
I did and it says you are not eligible for rebates at this time - anyone know what would cause that? Been a customer for over 10 years, is my 3 month HBO freebie screwing things up?
There seems to be 2 seperate processes for the gifts cards

1) you go to the web site, and print out form and mail

Or

2) they took care of it already for you

If it is the second, you won't be eligible via the web site. Do you remember what your customer service rep said exactly about the card?

Yeah, the rep said that it wasn't available for me. Couldn't say why - other than the boss had just said it wasn't available. I was wondering if anyone knew what qualifies people vs. not.

I just gave it a shot to see if the on-line system thought differently.

Well I called at 3:30pm central and didn't get a chance to call back. Called at midnight and of course they are "closed"

I think I missed out on a great opportunity but oh well. I'll let anyone know if I have any success

For my gift card, there is a line item in my "recent activity" section that says "gift card savings" with a charge of $0.

My rep said nothing about having to do anything additional, so I'd recommend checking to see if you have a similar line in your online "recent activity" section.

Couldn't wait any longer since the deal was supposed to be expiring last night. My mistake (if it would have made any difference) was not calling earlier in the week to set up my disconnect date. I entered my info. into the rebate site this morning and it says I'm not eligible, so for some reason they weren't willing to offer the gift card to me.

I'm still not convinced I'll get ST Max for free. When I checked my account this morning the programming section shows ST for 2015 with no charge but shows that I would have to pay to upgrade to ST Max. May be making another call soon to check on that.

Called this morning after cancelling yesterday. Got everything except the $200 Prepaid Visa, was told that offer expired yesterday. I'm very pleased with the results. I didn't even have to mention any emails or codes.

what did you say if you didn't mention anything?

Did you get an email from them, or just called?

Another satisfied customer. Called last week and set a June 8 cancellation. Never got a call or an email and was planning to wait until next week but I read here yesterday that the deal might end by COB so I called on my way home from work. No hassle at all. Guy initially only offered the $45 off a month for 12 weeks but I would say 'but the email says I could get the Ticket, and free movie channels for 3 months, etc. As soon as I asked he was like 'yep, you got it'. Then he offered up the $200 gift card before I could ask. Never said I had to sign up, just said it would arrive in 6-8 weeks.

All in all a very productive call!

5 years and going on free NFL Sunday ticket! :pickle:

All I did was gave my phone number connected to the account. I had not received any emails or phone calls. The lady immediately started listing everything I was eligible for. Could not have been easier. I did ask for the gift card, but was told that offer had expired.

Asked for $40 off and Sunday ticket after an annoyingly long discussion and they came back with $30 off and said they can't yet put the Sunday ticket on accounts.

So now I'm back on hold after saying, "that's fine, please setup the cancellation for the weekend of June 6"

They will bring the cards back. Maybe more. They will vary from 150 to 275 depending on the offer.

Not abnormal for them to shut down to end of month.

Called last night, about 10pm est. Got nowhere with the rep (best I could get was 3 months HBO/Showtime/etc - and he mentioned how much I was already saving on free HD channels. I countered with "I pay you $120 a month for TV. Please don't tell me how much I am already saving". So I set the cancel date for 2 weeks - 6/10.

Just got the "we can make this right / newdeal1" e-mail. Will report back.

ETA: Well, that was easy. $45 a month credit for 12 mo, all movie channels for 3 months, free Sunday Ticket Max for 2015. No gift card, but no biggie - I'm very happy.

So wait until the first to cancel?
You may need to wait longer. Watch the slickdeals thread or AVS forums. They follow the deals very closely.

Don't start the process until you are sure they are doing cards. That is, assuming you care about the card.

The promo rates are always offered (at least for uverse) using this same sort of flow. It's the cards that varies both in availability, and size.

Happy Happy Happy. love checking the Directv thread every 6 months to see what to ask for haha. Thanks so much for this thread. I received:

$43.00 off for a year

Free Sunday Ticket Max

3 months free HBO etc. etc.

she said the gift card was no longer available to which I replied "darn, and we were so close to getting this done too!" she put me on hold and saif there was still nothign she could do about the gift card as that promotion just ended, but she gave me my HBO free for the whole year along with Showtime. which basically evened out the 200.00 gift card. Oh and I had exactly 12 months left on my contract so I didnt have to extend or anything pretty much and I am prime to negootiate again this time next year.

Super happy with how it all panned out. I will say at first she just wanted to offer me the 43.00 off and I had to stand my ground, ended up getting it all. Call took about 45 minutes.

Oh yea sorry and I called yesterday and requested a June 13th disconnect, got the email this morning around 10am, for the people that arent getting the email make sure to check your promotions, social, or junk folder as mine was in there!

Awesome.

I probably could have done better had I said "thanks but no thanks" like you did. But I didn't - I took my 10-minute call and ran with my $45 (maybe it was $43 like yours - probably a standard number), ticket max, and 3 months.

Me too. I called yesterday as well and haven't heard from them either. I'll wait until tomorrow to see if I get anything otherwise I'm going to call in regardless

I canceled at 4:30. Still have 7-8 mos left.

Just called the 877# got a nice girl, said she sees that I'm eligible but not sure for what as she can't see the offers. Told me to disconnect at midnight and call first thing in the morning. If there are still no offers they will reconnect me until my cancelation date.

I did not receive any email or call,I just called.

So I'm in limbo for now.
So got disconnected last night. I called around 9:30am this morning.....

Had the Choice Package, upgraded to Choice Ultra, ST Max and HBO etc free for 3 mos, all for ~$74/mo. Still had over 12 mos left, thought it was only 6-7, but my new contract is only 12 mos.

Said no go to the $200 GC unless I upgraded my equipment. But I followed the link in this thread to to Rebate area, and was able to fill out a Rebate form. We'll see if i get it or not.

Pretty happy though.

Missed call at 9:30am this morning from Loyalty Team....
Bingo. Called back just now before the FBG site went viral and used up all the promo. The initial offer when I called back was only $43 off per month, movie channels, and genie installation. I asked if there was anything else he could offer to sweeten it a bit and then he kicked in the visa card and ST Max. Very similar offer to the others other than adding the genie mini to the deal with free installation. (before they wanted $99 for the genie mini).

$40 off/month for 12 months - bill went from $126 to $83

free $200 Visa GC (receive in 6 - 8 weeks)

Free movie stations 3 months

ST Max

Genie Mini added free installation

Total call was 34 minutes.

Thanks guys for the information.
Yea, in my email I got today it listed the Genie and Genie minis setup available for free as well
Do the addition of the Genies add more time to your contract in addition to the year others have mentioned?

Yes I have all older equipment but plenty of room on my DVR and it's whole home DVR - they sometimes try to give it to me but it's normally 24 months.

Yep free for a 24 month commitment. I already have the genie. Love it.

What do you mean you never use it? How do you watch Direct TV if you don't use it??
I don't use it differently than a regular box.
Shouldnt you be watching the game? Tying run is at the plate.

it allows you to record up to 5 shows at once on just a single cable from the dish.

so, pretty sure you're using it.

I called and just got pissed off. Told them I have been a loyal customer since 2001 and that I am pissed that my neighbors are getting "sweetheart deals" and that I have to call in to get any kind of discounts. The Directv rep said the FCC won't allow them to offer discounts without the customer calling in to receive them. I said that sounds like bull ####. Anyway told him to cancel me since the best #### deal they could give me was 40 dollars off a month for 1 year. I told the rep that you and I know both know that I will be getting an email later that is a lot better deal, and the more I have to wait the more pissed I will be. I told them I don't want to play games with cancelling service, getting an email, and all that crap. Just give me your best deal. Still 40 dollars was the best he could do (maybe it is?).

The guy could be right, in the sense that he couldn't offer the better deal. When I spoke to the Loyalty Team person he told be right up front they have more options to make offers.

Maybe the reason is they don't want Manila to be handing that out and the Loyalty Team is more US based, or maybe the guy was feeding you a line. But in my experience it sounded like the retentions office doesn't have the same options as the loyalty department.

Possibly. At this point I am really willing to cancel Directv no way I should be paying 175 a month for tv, with so much competition. We will see.
