Can you negotiate with DirecTV? (2 Viewers)

I called and just got pissed off. Told them I have been a loyal customer since 2001 and that I am pissed that my neighbors are getting "sweetheart deals" and that I have to call in to get any kind of discounts. The Directv rep said the FCC won't allow them to offer discounts without the customer calling in to receive them. I said that sounds like bull ####. Anyway told him to cancel me since the best #### deal they could give me was 40 dollars off a month for 1 year. I told the rep that you and I know both know that I will be getting an email later that is a lot better deal, and the more I have to wait the more pissed I will be. I told them I don't want to play games with cancelling service, getting an email, and all that crap. Just give me your best deal. Still 40 dollars was the best he could do (maybe it is?).
So you acted poorly and are pissed that a company does not want to automatically give you stuff cheap or free and make less money?

Seems odd.

How long have you had the Premier TV package? that is the regular price. Seems you should be able to get outta that for the promo rate $89/month, or something close if you've never haggled before with them...

Whether mad about the hoops you have to go through or not...you don't come off looking all that good if that is how you treated the guy.

How did that work out for you?

My gift card form is still not showing up under my "rebates". Am I looking in the right spot?

Guess I'll be calling back tomorrow about it.
Just an FYI, this also happened to me. On the phone, the woman told me that my service was going to be disconnected overnight for a few hours. It was still out when I woke up this morning, and there were no rebates under my account. I just got home from work, and my service is back, and now the rebate form is in my account.

40 dollars off a month, and some other crap. The real deal will come in the email I guess. Like I said at this point I really would be ok with cancelling.

That is the promo price for the Premier package (~$90). Whats the gripe?

:lmao: @sweetheart deals

We all went through the same thing. They make a minimal offer to get you to stay. You turn them down and continue with cancellation. They contact you a day later (or you contact them if you don't want to wait) and they throw it all at you. These aren't big hoops to jump through or some awful hassle. I'm not sure why you are so upset. It's not like you are the only one paying a good chunk for TV. While you may be a bit on the high side, I'd guess most people are in the $125-$150 range.

And why treat the poor guy that answered the phone like that? He didn't make you sign that contract FFS.

what # did you call with this? just the first # on the script?

The guy on the retention team told me last night that the regular customer service only has limited things they can offer

After reading your comments about the way I conducted myself on the phone with the DirecTV rep, I called back and told them that I would be willing to pay more for my service. Sorry

I don't get it? Why not just give the deals out to people if they keep saying cancel? I understand the "let's give the rubes 5 dollars off a month for 6 months if they will take it.

Because many get scared and won't actually go through with setting a cancellation date or dealing with it...so they don't have to just offer you everything.

Rather...they try to keep you and typically do a great job keeping people and giving them good deals compared to other companies.

I am in the middle of a crap storm. They said I agreed to a 2 year commitment when I took the 30 dollars a month offer, which they specifically told me no contract, now they are going to look up the call and listen to it. Cancelled 5 days ago and my account is still showing as active. FML.

Some of us, including Shiz, didn't get the same treatment or offers -

- we didn't get the email or call

- it wasn't just a 10 minute call, it was 45-50 minutes of being lectured about what a good deal we were getting

- the deals were #### compared to what is being listed here

- the deals also included contingencies of higher priced pkgs and/or 24 mo. commitments (with the genie equipment ...and they don't talk about the extended commitment)

- after all of that, nice treatment or not, some of us didn't get what most got.

We all didn't go through the same thing.

So...you don't have to follow that script that was posted. In fact, the credit card 200 dollar rebate is no longer offered. Just call and cancel. Wait for phone call. WIN!

Has anyone's cancel date come and gone? Was the service interrupted even though you cancelled the cancellation?
The cancellation date I had set up came and went with no service interruptions.

Though an empty cardboard box did show up a few days ago - the ones they send out with the prepaid return label for you to send your receivers back. I called customer service to make sure they weren't expecting me to send anything back, and she made notes in my account to verify I don't owe them any equipment since I continued with my subscription. It's probably because I didn't renew my subscription until about a week before the cancellation was set to take effect, so they had probably already processed the shipment of the cardboard box.

Just got an email from DTV :excited:

"Help us understand your entertainment needs" survey
I cancelled yesterday and promptly got a "Your DirecTV statement is now available" email. No sweetheart deal yet. I've always been a $60 to 80 monthly bill kind of customer. Wonder if that figures into it.

They will bring the cards back. Maybe more. They will vary from 150 to 275 depending on the offer.

Not abnormal for them to shut down to end of month.
You speak credibly on this. Im not asking you to tell us everything; but are you basing this on precedent from simply noticing a pattern as a customer......or something else? Thx...

i simplified the initial call. there was some mild salesmanship about how i wasn't going to find anything better, i've gotten great deals before, i had 25/mo off at the time. but my stance was clear (this is important!) i was calling to cancel, period. end of story. set my cancel date 2-3 weeks out. thanks.

the call back was exactly as i described. i said nothing and was offered everything.

shizznitt, #####ing the guy out in the initial phone call is an example of what not to do. was he right in a common sense way, absolutely. but you gotta play the game and remember that the people on the phone are just doing their jobs. the initial retention call simply isn't authorized to give it up.

How did that work out for you?
40 dollars off a month, and some other crap. The real deal will come in the email I guess. Like I said at this point I really would be ok with cancelling.

We all didn't go through the same thing.
the first bit is your fault.

the 2nd was clarified in here and i was made aware of it quite clearly. sorry it was difficult for you

Thx...
I was a former u verse customer. u verse bought dtv and is now using the same promo cycle.

This is a lot easier. Uv would make you mail the boxes in.

I hated #######s like you when I worked customer service when I was younger.
So sorry about your loss

you're over reacting. it's impossibly easy to do this. easier than the chiseling calls i've made every year

here's how mine went.

i want to cancel

why?

too expensive

you sure?

yes

ok.

less than 24 hours later they call me

hello

hi, i saw you want to cancel, i can give you w,x,y and z. would that make you want to stay

yes

cool, you're all set

No it's not. See my post and several others above. For some reason they aren't giving everyone that same treatment.

You can talk to the initial person anyway you want. They cannot give you a good deal. Did I call the guy a Mother ####er? No, I just told him I was pissed about the ####ty song and dance we have to do to get a great deal. In fact, I told him, "You and I both know that when I hang up someone is calling me back with a much better deal." I was 100% right, the guy couldn't offer crap, and I did get a call within 2 hours that almost cut my bill in half for a year, and free Sunday Ticket max.

Did anyone talk nice to the initial person and get a better deal?

I would talk nice to the initial person simply because there's no need to treat people like @#$% over saving a few dollars. Especially people who, by your own admission, do not have the power to help you.
