Can you negotiate with DirecTV? (5 Viewers)

Made the yearly call. Said cancel service. Loyalty department reviewed my account and offered me the standard $60 off a month for my Xtra package. I asked for NFL Sunday Ticket Max. No offers for that on my account. I said go ahead and cancel. He said let me do some checking. Took a while but he said his supervisor allowed it. I verified it was Max as he didn't seem to know which. He was going to process the order and I asked about gift cards. Said my friends were getting $200 gift cards. No other offers available. Said every account is different. I said what about movie channels. No offers. I could have done the disconnect in a week and probably gotten a little more but didn't feel like the hassle. So bill knocked down $60 a month and free football. Good enough. Double checked and shows on my account. No disconnect / reconnect issues to deal with. 20-25 minute call. See ya next year.
I had basically the same experience and results, only my call took 2 hours.

i had to disconnect to get a deal

but ended up with 50 a month off of extra package (which actually is not as good as what I got last year so my monthly bill went up a small amount), free sunday ticket max, and 100 dollar gift card.

no contract

was very close to giving up and getting rid of these jokers but I guess I m back for another year.  16 years in a row free sunday ticket!

At this point, paying for a service like Direct TV (putting the sunday ticket aside) is mostly just about convenience/laziness.  But once the monthly cost gets above like $160, I feel like I'm being taken for a ride.

I dont like the idea of having to boot up an ap or something every time I feel like watching something. And the idea of having to jump between aps full time just seems really annoying to me.  Sometimes I just like to flop down on the couch and surf the channels.

Would probably do me some good if I COULDN'T just stumble across a 2 hours window of Seinfeld re-runs (might incentivize me to do something more productive or at the very least watch some new content) but it is what it is.

I know there's probably a way for me to watch 95% of what I NEED to watch (mostly live sports and a dozen or so shows that i watch consistently over the course of the year) through some combo of streaming services. I just don't want to deal with that aggravation yet. I dont want have to go to NBC Peacock for one show, HBO MAX for another, load up ESPN+ to watch a game, etc.

Maybe by the time Direct TV finally craps out for good, it will be simple/cheap enough to stream everything I want pretty much ala carte.
This is exactly me.  All my friends say how great everything else is and how cheap it is but then I have to learn something else.  I like what I have and the convenience of it.  It is why I haven't changed anything.

To those going the BBB route, I feel your pain. Had to do that last year because they screwed up my loyalty and winback stuff so badly. I will say it gets them to respond quickly and take you serious though. The Office of President person I worked with was great and even stepped in and helped get some tech issues I had resolved after reconnection.

Its a hassle no doubt but it does work and gets you where you want to be discount-wise.

I had submitted a BBB complaint about my deal offer.  To give ATT a bit of credit someone from Office Of The President called me to tell me that some additional discounts have been placed on my account and according to her my bill for Choice all inclusive with receiver, HD, and DVR fees will be $34.98/month plus tax.  It will end up being a bit more after whatever the annual increase will be in February.  This person gave me her direct phone number and told me to call her if my next bill does not show the discounts.  When I look online I don't see the extra discounts she told me were on my account so I'll see when I get my next bill.

My previous posts still apply that the annual song and dance is a pain and the ATT customer service isn't close to Directv.  But to be fair my BBB was quickly responded to so if anyone else has issues then submitting a BBB complaint might be a way to go.
I did the same thing when I cancelled as they tried to charge me 11 months of early cancellation fees even though I was out of contract.  The Office of the President guy who called and "waived" those fees was easy to work with and sympathetic.  I told him my opinion that the company's customer service has gone into the toilet since purchased by AT&T and he told me he'd heard that a lot and they were working to improve it...but he also didn't disagree.

Office of President told me the same thing last year.  Easier to deal with but it should never get to that point.

Tried calling the 877-777-2454, but it kept saying busy.  I called the direct customer service number of 800-531-5000.  Finally talked to a live body and they transferred me to the loyalty dept.  Got $35/mo off my bill for 12 months and the ST Max for free.  Didn't want to push it, so I took it.  Total call about 15 minutes.

I always (very politely) push, but that's just me. Figure I'm starting at $0 discounts and no ST so anything I get is a bonus and the worst they can say is no. So even if they do, I haven't lost anything. I get it though, it's a massive pain to go through multiple calls, holds, etc. As I told my wife, the three 'luxury' things I care about over the course of the year are golf, ST/fantasy and occasionally poker. I don't spend my $$$ on much else outside essentials and our kids so holding for longer and pushing harder mean more to me.

Still find it incredulous that different customers with the same type of service can call the same number at the same time and get such widely different offers. The really sad part is as soon as the NFL offers different options for ST through other or alternate providers, I am gone from DTV and will never return. Over these last five years, had they at any point said hey ACG you've been a great15+ year customer with no late payments and no issues we're going to give you two years of ST for the price of one, $X off in bill credits, blah blah blah I wouldn't have asked for a thing and probably would be willing to stay with them.

As we know, that's not how DTV rolls so now it's become my annual mission to get as much as I can from them. I don't want to try to guess the # of customers they will lose permanently once they don't own exclusive ST rights. I know I'm one for sure.

I had a DVR crap out after about 15 years.  I called to have them send out a new one and they wanted to charge me $99 for the call out to confirm the receiver was bad.  I threatened to cancel and then sent me to someone else.  All they did was agree to send the new receiver for no charge.   Said there were no other deals available and to call back next month.  Ugh.

Yearly update is once again a disaster. (Last year filed complaint with BBB and AT&T and someone from office of president did work out deal for me). This year called 877-777-2454 on 9/16 for deal as I was in last month of $35/month discount, currently paying $92/month for choice w/3 boxes. She offered to do the $35/month discount again for 12 months but no ST discount so I schedule disconnection for last day of billing cycle on 10/1. I call 866-595-2871 4 days later to see if I can get deal with ST included. He only offers me $15/month discount which I tell him is worse than the previous offer and transfers me to different department to try and see if ST discount available. She can't do anything so I hang up. Fast forward to end of month they don't disconnect and withdraw $131. I pull up account and see $15/month credit on the bill so that 2nd guy I talked to withdrew my pending disconnect without my permission. I am livid and call billing department yesterday, he sees notes on my account that say on the 2nd call that "customer changed mind and doesn't want to disconnect". I tell him that is a lie, to pull the recording and see. He believes me and admits that those reps do it all the time because it counts negatively against them if they can't convince people to stay connected! I say WTF!? This guy should be fired but of course no one cares.  He offers yesterday to disconnect immediately and I am trying to get confirmation that they are going to refund this $131 payment. He tries and tries to get "manager" to approve that and finally tells me that the fastest way for me to get the money back (instead of waiting for a gift card with the balance) is to contact my bank and tell they that I did not authorize payment to dispute the charge. I reluctantly agree and he disconnects service. Husband goes to bank and they will not do anything without proof of cancellation. Submit email saying we cancelled and then have to jump through hoops with bank with details dates/times of phone calls etc in order for them to dispute the charge.  I'm still going to file complaint with BBB but at this point unless it is a super sweet deal I'm not sure we're going back. Signed up for free trial of YouTube TV but picture isn't as good and it's still going to be $70/month with taxes and another $15-20 month to get other channels through firestick. Frustrated as usual with the whole process and unreal waste of time this whole thing is.

I've got a problem also.  I was originally offered a win back of $65 off per month and was told that my bill would be $47.98/month.  I asked if that was inclusive of all fees and I was told it was.  Upon reconnect I had no HD channels and no DVR functionality.  I got HD and DVR added back to account which of course made my $47.98 offer go up by $20.  I submitted a BBB complaint and someone called and confirmed the price that my bill should be going forward.  LOL my bill today was for $139, no $65 discount and still being charged the HD and DVR fees that were supposed to be included in the $47.98 offer.  I have a call into the Office Of The President but so far nobody has called me back.  Fortunately I was smart enough to use a virtual credit card number on my account with not enough money on it so the $139 charge is not going to go through.

I hate to hear that you are not happy with the YouTube TV picture as that is my fall back.  I think I may have to look at new subscriber offers for Xfinity but their $89 package is missing some channels that I would like to have.  So this is a bummer.

Side note I see that you are a Chiefs fan.  I am a Patriots fan so I hope that they did not give Covid to Mahomes.

Free HBO Max for a year $-14.99/mo

Free movie channels - Starz/Cinemax/Showtime 3 months $-36.00/mo (cancellation date set on calendar).

Free Epix 3 months $-5.99/mo

Monthly credit $-52.01 for 12 mos.

AutoPay $-5.00/mo. for 12 mos.

One-time instant credit $-20.00

2021 cancel date is marked on my calendar. Online login didn’t get screwed up so that’s nice.

If any of you are missing a local channel on DirecTV due to their dispute with TEGNA, I was able to get a $20 credit today.  They have this link posted in their Twitter replies:

We have every intention of getting TEGNA’s stations back as soon as possible, but by law, TEGNA has exclusive control over them. We will do all we can to resolve this soon. For more information on viewing options and credits please visit http://sm.att.com/e07c11c0

I wasn't able to find out any info about credits via that link, so I contacted them on Twitter and said I was inquiring about a bill credit as mentioned in that link.  After a few back and forth messages on Twitter and then a live chat via a link they sent me, I got a $20 bill credit.

I quit DirectTV over a year ago and I'm not going back, however, they sent me a "We want you back" mailer.  $54.99/month with Entertainment package, free genie and HD upgrade, Free movies for 3 months and $200 GC.  The phone number is 888-641-6015.

Just posting for anyone who may still be playing the game.

Thanks. Link worked for me. After I logged in I chose manage my account and the first screen that popped up had a link to accept the credit. Good looking out.

Thanks for the link.  Just accepted the $20 credit.  Says it could take 2 billing cycles to show up.

Just called and have service set to disconnect on this Sunday. Will see if I can get a solid "win back" offer but if not, ready to cut the cord after 21 straight years of service. Is calling 888-641-6015 still the best way to try and get a win back offer once service is off?

weird time of year to do it.   Mine is always around start of nfl so i can get the ticket.  not sure what the play would be this time of year.  i have had success just using the chat and seeing what happens

My negotiation right now is just to get them to send me a new Genie as mine is crapping the bed.

And see what type of 4K content I can get out of this.

Looks like I am eligible for a free equipment upgrade and my bill won't change.

More and more of what I want to watch is available by streaming.  I'm having a hard time justifying any reason to keep Directv, even with some screaming deal they give me to stick with it..

Man I spent days trying to get something...and finally like the 3rd or 4th day, it paid off.

So my bill for the next 12 months is $110 a month (keep in mind I have 9 receivers thus the higher bill) and got 12 months of HBO for free, Sunday Ticket Max for free, 2 $100 gift cards, and all the other movie channels for 3 months for free. It's the choice plan.

I was paying about $140 a month before I cancelled, so well worth the hassle to get $30 off, $200 in gift cards, free ST, and free movies channels. But I still hate this company so much. So full of it....

DO IT.  You will love yourself until getting pissed at yourself again for not doing it sooner.

New NFL contract looks like Sunday Ticket in DTV will end ...contract was through 2022 and does t look like it will continue.

What was your approach to getting the discounts? Set a cancellation date? Complain about cost and ask for discounts?

I did cancel. Used youtube tv and streamed for about a week (actually a little less) and called and said before I send these receivers back do you want to give me a winback offer to keep me after 21 years of being with your sheeethole company...or something close to that ;)

I'm glad this is leaving DTV, but I do hope that there's still a package deal out there someplace for those of us who want to buy access to out-of-market games.  I don't want to have to sign up for multiple streaming services to nail down the NFL.  Just give me the Ticket for a couple hundred on Amazon and I'll be happy.

Yeah...agreed.  I have not seen what they would do for that...Amazon may make a play since they are getting the Thursday night games.

Its about the only thing keeping me at DTV...have not had the pain others have had with having to cancel each year and be without service for a couple days in order to get a deal.  So a call and an hour or so to get free NFL and lower rates hasn't been too bad.  But without the ticket...may not be worth staying with them over some of the other streaming options now.

Better yet, just include it with Prime. Bezos can afford it.

Except for live sports/events, I almost never watch DirecTV. We stream nearly everything. While I would love to ditch DTV, my gripe with streaming live sports is the delay. For example, during the NFL season, I watch Red Zone and check stats on my phone. That's fine. But when I've had to stream an NFL game (via Amazon Prime, for instance), I've noticed that the play-by-play on my phone will update before the game I'm streaming. Similarly, I'll get a text message from a friend about a big play because he's watching the local live broadcast, and my streaming broadcast is behind. First-world problems and all that, but is this an annoyance for others? The delay on streaming services can sometimes be 30 seconds, sometimes a minute or two. Even if DTV lost Sunday Ticket, I may just keep it at as minimal cost as possible, just to have an option for live sports.

my login problem is fixed, wrote a message to Directv on twitter, 2 days later got this reply, the keyword is resynced

"Good evening, I have an update from the escalation team. They have resynced your account. Can you try to login into your account and let me know the outcome. I look forward to speaking with you soon!"

Streaming sucks. I hate it. I hope I never have to go to streaming services.
People said that about the automobile too when it was invented I'm sure.  I can't believe people still pay for cable tv.

For the last 30+ years that I have had cable or satellite, I turn on my TV and like magic I have a TV show.  Whenever I have to stream something it's a pain in the a$$ and doesn't work right.

I would guess it's a router problem.  You can get a top of the line router for like $100 now days.  Plus your phones and tablets will be screaming.

I had to stream the NCAA semi-final and every 10 minutes it would black out and tell me that it wasn't available in my area. I'd refresh it and it would start up again until the next time. It did it again at the end of the game and never came back, so guess who missed "the shot."

Stuff like that happens every time I stream something.

thanks god for bbb.org

got my 1st bill directv bill yesterday after reactivating, there were 2 problems, filed a complaint on bbb yesterday, got a phone call this morning, problem was resolved

Wait, you don't pay for streaming services or internet to stream?
No streaming service.  Everyone pays for internet.

Let's ignore getting streams from illegal sources for free, which I do.  I get all local channels and about 50 others from a OTA antenna free.  I also have a smart tv that came loaded up with 300 free channels - Samsung Plus Tv. There are several streaming services like that now for free. They feel just like basic cable to me.

But, I wasn't really talking about getting stuff for free.  I might have paid for a car and still found it unbelievable people still paid to ride horses.  Cable and Dish have been antiquated technologies ever since the internet reached streaming speeds.
