Captain America: Winter Soldier (1 Viewer)

I saw this again with my son yesterday. I think I actually liked it more on second viewing. In fact, as a standalone movie, I'm ready to call it the overall best film Marvel has done.

Avengers will always stand a bit apart based on being as much an Event as a movie. In terms of storytelling, plot, and dramatic tension, I think Cap 2 is on a different level. Bonus points for being socially relevant and actually having a message behind it.

This is now my favorite Marvel movie. I would have picked The Avengers before, but I think Cap 2 has a better ending. The ending of Avengers has an enemy that I just don't care about. Generic aliens. The antagonist in Cap 2 is a much more compelling finale to me.

I get what you're saying, but isn't Hydra just as much "generic Nazis" as the Chitauri are "generic aliens"?

I meant The Winter Soldier.

:bag: Oh, you meant the guy whose name is in the title? Crazy. Ha.

Saw it tonight with my family. We all loved it. Thought the tip of the cap to Jules was awesome as someone else mentioned earlier. Marvel is really doing a great job weaving all these individual movies together, a lesson that DC sorely needs to learn.

Not sure anyone else caught the reference to

Steven Strange and Bruce Banner. Hope that may mean we can see a Dr Strange movie, that would be excellant
As of right now I would have to rank the Top 3 as:

Avengers

Cap 2

Thor 2

Iron Man

Thor 2??? I thought it was pretty bad.

It's ok for you to be wrong.

Enjoyed the movie very much.

I had no clue who the folks in the end credit scenes were though. I assume they're significant in the Marvel universe?

I HAVE to go see this thing soon. I loved the first Captain America and have been pumped for this since I saw the first preview....now with all of the glowing reviews, I want to just skip out on work and go see it today.

Quicksilver (super, super, super speed) & Scarlet Witch (casts hexes with often upredictable reality bending results). They are mutants, the children of Magneto actually

Yup.

But to explain what her role is would give away some potential spoilers with the 2nd Avengers story. Excited to see where they go with her, especially with the Dr. Strange name drop in this film. If you're curious, google Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver.

Ah, thanks.
What is interesting from a film studio perspective is that those two appear to be the only characters being used by both Marvel Studios and Fox. Not sure how the licensing rights work out on that one but it gives me a glimmer of hope that one day we will have an X-Men/Avengers crossover.

Quicksilver
is in Days of Future Past and Avengers 2.

Scarlet Witch
is scheduled for just Avengers right now.

First one was the worst of the bunch so I'll wait to get this via Amazon.
Comparing this movie to the first one is a mistake. Cap 2 was better in every possible way, and arguably right up there with IM1 and Avengers.
I understand, I'm just worn out on the superhero movies.

Ah gotcha. Your first post made it seem like because the first one was weak that you wanted to wait.

As for the burn out, I wonder if this is how people started to feel bout Westerns back when they were coming out like crazy.

While we have not achieved that level of saturation yet with super hero movies, you have to think a tipping point will be coming.

Either way I was curious how Fox & Marvel would handle the characters that appeared in both X-Men and Avengers frequently. It gives me hope.

And if they have Quicksilver in both then I imagine they could have Scarlet Witch in both if they wanted. They kind of go hand in hand.

I asked this same question yesterday in the Marvel Movie Universe thread. Scooby answered with some info.

Yeah, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch are kind of unique in that it's hard to say what "franchise" they should be owned by. Yeah, the premiered in the X-Men, but they were Avengers less than a year later. When the film rights were sold, the studios didn't lock themselves into specific characters. They got the characters associated with the franchise. And in most cases, that's fine. We know that Green Goblin is a Spiderman character (even though Norman Osbourn has been associated in other storylines). We know the Silver Surfer is associated with the Fantastic Four and that Apocalypse will be an X-Men villain.

In the Twins' case, it was reported that Disney/Marvel and Fox came to an agreement that both could use Quicksilver so long as Marvel never referenced their relationship to Magneto (or being "mutants" at all). And I think those types of agreement may become more common. There was talk that there would be a Baxter Building cameo in the Avengers, but that would have probably required a small payment to Fox, who still controls the Fantastic Four movie rights (I suspect if the new FF reboot tanks, Fox will just sell those rights back to Disney).

Similarly, if Marvel starts doing more space/cosmic themed stories, you might expect S.W.O.R.D. to show up. And they're a similar problem as they were created for X-Men but didn't stay in that franchise long.

The production time of each film and age of the actors makes it near impossible to pull this off. Unless they come up with a new generation of Avengers and have them team up with younger X-men like Kitty Pride or something.

Reboot

Pretty awesome movie. A little below Avengers just because the Avengers was so much of my childhood all thrown together in epic fashion on the big screen. Perfect blend of action and humor. This was a little heavier, but great nonetheless.

Very good movie.

A couple of things - Jackson is so one note that I hate him as Fury

Widow appearing upset over Nick's apparent death seemed a little off for a master spy

I know you need to change it for the story but Cap's shield took a direct hit from Thor and didn't move him - but a punch in the shield from the soldier sends him a block and a half..

Pleasantly surprised at how good this was. Scarlett is looking better and better as Black Widow.

One of the hostages in the beginning was a familiar face but I can not figure out who she is. They showed her face up close but that was the only screen time she had. Anyone?

Finally took my sons to see it yesterday afternoon. It definitely was very topical and had a decent message about national security vs. freedom.

One question I had was:

What was the significance of Black Widow putting all of SHIELD's information on the internet? Did I miss something?

Really enjoyed this movie. The only complaint I have(and this is a minor minor nitpick) is I wish they would do a better job explaining why the other avengers are occupied and can't help.

I kept thinking this as well. I know it's dumb, but I guess that's just something you deal with now that they've linked the movies.

"Captain, if those ships get to 3,000 feet, they'll be linked with the satellites and 20 million people will die!"

"Well, I can text Stark and get him over here to shoot them down in like 30 seconds."
Wouldn't be a great movie I guess.

My impression was that it would reveal that Shield was Hydra.

Well at least those two guys are typically unreachable. Hulk typically in solitude somewhere and Thor in another realm. Stark has a freaking tower in NYC.

Not to mention he was actually targeted, so you KNOW he was there watching it all happen. What? Did Pepper Potts need help hanging blinds?

Wasn't Stark starting from scratch at the end of IM3? For this story, it's probably best to assume he doesn't have a functional suit yet.

I thought Stark/Iron Man "retired" (blew up all his suits) in the last Iron Man movie. Would make him pretty unreachable, no?

That's what happens in comics. It would be pretty boring if it didn't.
I don't really blame them for it, that would be stupid, but I just kept thinking it in the movie and found it distracting is all.
It would probably be worse if in every solo movie they had to come up with an explanation why the other heroes aren't around to pitch in.
"Really sucks about Banner's flight getting delayed out of Dubai."

Well then seems like a pretty simple thing to clear up with one line of dialogue from Fury. "Stark is out of the game, Banner has disappeared again, you're all we've got" or something.

:goodposting: His house and all of his suits are gone at the end of IM3, and these films seem to happen in a fairly close timeline.
