Cardinals notes from sports talk radio today (1 Viewer)

LHUCKS

Footballguy
A) Whisenhunt stated he's "not going to bang his head against the wall" trying to run the ball, there is a general understanding that the Cards will use the pass to open up the run

B) Breaston has won the job as the punt returner

C) Arrington has won the job as kickoff returner

D) Rolle has been beat out by Eric Green and Rod Hood :coffee:

E) Unlike Denny Green, Whisenhunt has challenged Leinart to be a better leader

F) Staff very pleased with passblocking, but not getting enough "push" when run blocking

G) They mentioned a rookie that was a 6'6" forward at Michigan St. under Tom Izzo that has really turned some heads and may be a surprise to make the team, will definitely make practice squad

It sounds like Whisenhunt may not be as committed to run the ball as previoiusly hinted...I had Fitzgerald ranked as one of the most overrated WRs this year but I may have to back off of that now.

A little graphic don't you think? Let's try to keep it PG.

Matt Trannon

He was always a better football player than basketball

Let me just take this moment in time to say: This is the very cheapest you will ever get JJ Arrington in Dynastys. I'm calling a RB controversy in 08.

Edge has been fine. Trouble with the run-blocking is all you need to know.

Also pretty amazed that Rolle got beat out. He was a really high pick as I remember.

Isn't Shipp the backup?
Yeah, but I think Arrington is the 3rd down guy. I think between the returns and 3rd downs , he'll have enough opportunity to cause controversy. Some guys just need some time.

Nice read HERE

Yeah, it was either him or Pac Man Jones that year. :goodposting: Pick your poison: a walking, talking pass interference call or a gun-toting pothead?

Wisenhunt can bang his head all he wants, but until they get an OL, they are not going to be able to run the ball. Plus their defense is lousy. As much as he would like for Leinart to manage the game, it will be another year of high interception / td rate for Leinart always playing from behind. It doesn't matter how many weapons you have on offense, it all starts with the OL. Without it, those weapons are rendered useless.

Rod Hood is a pretty good player. The Eagles are going to miss him. He just couldn't see enough field time playing behind Lito Sheppard and Sheldon Brown. He will be missed in Philly.

I'll go on record and say the Cards have an above average pass blocking unit. They manhandled the Charger defense...the blitzing may have been vanilla, but they have looked pretty good this preseason.

I too am very surprised that Rolle has not done much...

Since it was already talked about, is it Shipp or Arrington that is going to be the running mate in 08?

That's one of the funniest posts I've read here in a while!

Interesting, but there's a big difference between finding a niche and becoming an everydown back.

IMHO, he'll be a niche runner for the rest of his career...then again, I remember thinking that about Tiki too.

Matt Trannon he was supposed to be the next stud WR for Michigan State after Plaxico and Rogers. He came in very very highly touted but he never really developed. Last year he had a decent year while the team imploded and he did set a MSU receiveing record in a game, I think it was for 12 catches. The guy is hard worker and always did the right things he just never developed. He was the 6th man off the bench when he played basketball, and was that tough rebounder role type player. He did not play basketball his last year because he wanted to focus on football

I never agreed with all the chatter about the Cardinals becoming a running team. This seemed to based on the fact that Whisenhunt came from the Steelers and that makes no sense. He was the OC, not the head coach and it was not in his power to open up the offense. Regarding Rolle. I recall talk at draft time about questions if he had corner cover skills and might really be a safety disguised as a CB. This appears to be true but the good news is if he's willing to embrace the position switch he could make one helluva a safety.

Agree here. The pass blocking looks awesome. Once the defense wears and the pass opens up the run, don't be shocked to see Edge put up some numbers, especially late in games.

Arrington may indeed be better than what he's shown, but more often than not, if a RB doesn't succeed early, the opportunity dissipates. I would guess that if Edge performs badly this year, Whisenhunt will go out and get his own guy, whether it's a rookie or FA.

Any Arizona homers insight would be helpful:

I keep hearing about this rookie LB Togafau and how he is playing well....even better than Buster, what's the word out of Ari. on this guy, does he have potential to play this year?

I have heard this comparison before, and I think there is some validity to it, unfortunately the guy seems to be a turnip in the smarts department.

I'd also throw out the possibility of a team switch to a Cover-2 scheme where the CB has more run coverage responsibilities, sorta like Marlin Jackson, who I think was in the same draft and I expect to be huge this year.

Im with you. Especially with next years dime a dozen Rb class.I'm just thinking with the last pick in a inaugural dynasty or a FA pickup this guy is worth the dice roll based off the support hes getting from the coaches and the recent play on the field.

Even Edge didn't do too well with that same O-line.

Agreed - at that price, it's worth a flier.

you don't need a great run-blocking line when you have Leinart looking as 'all-world' as he did in preseason.

he looks AWESOME, and with that tandem of WR's, defenses will be on their heels. Boldin looks like he's ready to go NUTS this season, could finish with top 5 WR numbers.

never-has-been JJ Arrington is even averaging 4.0 per carry so far, a VERY GOOD SIGN of things to come for Edge.

people keep overlooking him, but this Cards team,at least offensively, has a chance to do this season what N.O. did last season, i.e., finish at or near the top in nearly every statistical category.

Edge WILL be a top 10 RB this year.. :lmao:
