CARDS O LINE Problems (1 Viewer)

News: James will be running behind two rookie offensive linemen and a second-year player in Week 2, according to the Cardinals' official site.

Spin: With starting center Al Johnson (knee) out for one game and possibly more and starting right tackle Oliver Ross (biceps) out for the season, James will be running behind a very green line. He gutted out 92 yards on 26 carries in Week 1 and will have to grind it out again in Week 2 behind a shaky offensive line that wasn't great to begin with.

this team just cant catch any breaks. I thought Edge ran really well last night. he got zero help from the passing game. But why the heck wasnt Leinart throwing to Fitzgerald at all? Line or no line...when the QB doesnt play well, theyre going to lose.

Ross was already gone. That hasn't changed at all. They played game 1 without him. Sure, it compounds the issue of having a rookie Center start, but it's something the team has already prepared for.

I'm sure there will be some growing pains for Sendlein starting at Center as a rookie, but he looked pretty good in the action he got last night.

Yeah Sendlein held his own after he came in. I think they'll be okay, but there just isn't much depth on the offensive line.

Very true. But if there's good news in Johnson's injury, it's that center was probably the one position where there was the smallest dropoff from starter to backup. And worst case, they end up back at Leckey, who started 11 games last year for them.

Cardinals sign new center

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports free-agent C Chukky Okobi (Steelers) will sign with Arizona today. The Cardinals lost starting C Al Johnson to a knee injury on Monday night against the 49rs. Okobi was beaten out for the Steelers job by Sean Mahan and got caught in a roster squeeze. He's a good player, and the best part is he knows Cardinals OL coach Russ Grimm from his 6 years in Pittsburgh.

I am not even sure Sendlein will be starting - as the previous poster noted the Cardinals signed Okobi, who has a history with both Grimm and Whisenhunt and thus the O Line blocking scheme and may be able to contribut this week.

All the better.

Fitz wasn't open much all night.

If they don't get this o.line fixed there will be no fantasy fun in Arizona. It will be very frustrating towatch too.

I'm not sure exactly when the injury happened, but I think Johnson played most of the first half, and Sendlein the 2nd. James was 11-52 in the first (4.7 YPC), and 15-40 (2.6 YPC) in the second. Also in the second half James had three carries for negative yardage, where in the first half all his carries were for positive yards.

One soft spot of the Niner D is the d-line.... doesn't mean much.

I watched the game and wondered the same thing. Was Fitz double teamed all night? I just can't believe he was covered ALL NIGHT by one guy.
