Cat talk/advice - all meow, all the time (1 Viewer)

I'm no Jackson Galaxy but my guess is your cat is just an #######

also possible it doesn’t like something about the litter, maybe try a different style in one of them?

You are most definitely right.

I use those fancy auto sweep litter boxes with crystal litter. So not sure I can change it.

Ok sounds like you are doing the right things, maybe just give it more time.
Have you heard her Purr yet?

This is something that I would do with my many foster kittens & it always seemed to work:  Pick them up and lay them on their side in front of you.   put 1 hand on their side to gently hold them in that position.  With the other hand take your thumb or index finger and gently massage their neck & alongside their spine going up & down.  Usually it’s an insta-purr in that moment or the next time you do it.  Do this enough times & Pretty soon, she will be coming to you & you’ll be getting head butts.
GL & keep posting updates on how she is doing.
Initially, she purred like a champ. Sounded like a Weedwhacker. Haven’t really heard much from her lately though. Your technique did seem to make her very comfortable.

She is still very lethargic. Doesn’t do much, and apparently wasn’t really eating more than a bite or two per session. My wife thinks she was losing weight, so we gave her a little bit of soft food and she inhaled it. So maybe she just doesn’t care for the crunchies.

We had been prepared to just ride it out and see how things go, but it seems like her left eye has a bunch of goop in it, so we went ahead and made her an appointment tomorrow with a vet.

Good news. our kitten hadn’t perked up by Friday, and had gotten noticeably skinnier, so we got her an appointment with a vet. It turns out she had been going through an upper respiratory infection with a side order of goo in her left eye. She got three prescriptions: one for the eye, one for the infection, and one for the diarrhea that I think I forgot to mention earlier but was awful. all have been extremely helpful and she is now doing kitten-type things again.

The veterinarian had mentioned that we might want to have her tested for feline leukemia, since she had lost weight and was down to 1.7 pounds. Seems like that won’t be necessary though. We got her some high calorie kitten food and she has been inhaling that as well as eating the other cat’s crunchies. We’ve given her the name, Clara (because my wife vetoed Baconator).

Thank you to everyone who gave input. This community continues to be a reliable resource in so many ways.

I rather like that name.  Not that there's anything wrong with Clara.

But in your heart, Baconator will always be her secret name.
our cats have about a half dozen names each, usually riffs on the original.

but Baconator is an awesome name. Bacon. Bakey. Nate. Nator.

mostly I'm just glad Dennis' kitten got healthy and that they were proactive dealing with it. Fidel is good name for a cat.

@Dennis CastroHow's it going w Clara, now?

Question for indoor only cat guys:

How often do you take them in for a vet visit? I have a 7 year old I'm taking in tomorrow to have a weird scab that won't go away looked at. He had all his initial vax and boosters a year later but we've had no reason to bring him back in the last 5 years.

I'm wondering if they'll press me to give him more vax/boosters and not sure I want him to get another kitty leukemia booster.

They'll make a lot of recommendations. Do the research afterwards and see if/what you need. They're not going to force you to do or get anything you don't want.

We take ours in every couple years or if there's a problem.

Thanks for asking. The few days after the vet were kind of worrying, but she is all better now. Very active, getting into everything, randomly tackling the older cat, and all kinds of other hell-raising. I’ve never lived with a kitten before, but I apparently this is all quite normal. The only thing that seems a bit strange is that she sniffs constantly, and you can hear it. I don’t think that has anything to do with her health, so she must have really small nasal passages. Doesn’t seem to bother her a bit.

Considering how bonkers she is now, when I look back, it’s clear that she really was very sick. And given how small she was, I’m not sure she would’ve made it. So thanks gang, I really do appreciate it, even if my furniture does not.

Yeah, pretty much this.  Given my cats are indoor only, I don't get them any of the shots or take them in unless there's an issue, but I do watch closely for issues.  This changes when they hit maybe 10-12 years old, when I take them in more frequently (but still don't get the shots).

I do an annual visit with just a rabbies and I think it's Distemper is the other one.  One of them is a once every 2 year shot.  I'd take the cat in to get that checked out.  It's probably nothing but have made the mistake before on something that I thought was nothing turned out to be something more.

rabies? for an indoor cat?

I had a cat who hadn't been to the vet in years.  He was in good health and when we moved to CO I decided it was time to take him in.  Imagine my shock when they told me he had 70% kidney failure.  They put him on a special diet and he lived another couple of years but I can't help but wonder if he could have lived longer had I caught the failing kidneys earlier.  As long as there is any kidney function the cat will act totally healthy.  He was 13 at the time he was diagnosed so definitely a little bit older of a cat, but I am pretty careful to take my cats in every year or two now.

Oh, and Temptations has human flavored cat treats for Halloween season :).

Yep, it's good that I now have the peace of mind that it was a very small "mass" that the doc could not pinch off. She said it was so small to just watch it and if it gets bigger or seems to be aggravating him bring him back and in and they'll knock him out and excise. And clean his molars.

On another note I did discover that Whoa Black Betty Bam a Lam McNulty is a rare pure breed Bombay (no parental history for full confirm).

When we moved to our new house 7 years ago he showed up out of the woods about 6 months after we moved in and worked his way into the household after we had him cleaned up and fixed. They estimated he was less than a year old. We guess that someone abandoned him as he knew all about a can opener after he moved in.

Lesson learned by this indoor kitty owner who had not brought him to the vet in 6 years.

When they cleaned his teeth they discovered a distended tooth with exposed roots. He was flinching even while under anesthesia. They removed it. The vet told me he probably had a severe toothache for awhile. Animals have built in instincts to deal with mouth pain and do not let on. Bad breath is a sure indicator of periodontal disease (my cat did not have bad breath unless you count kibble breath right after eating).

Anyway, like my wife said, "that's it. He's getting checked out annually from now on."

That applies to the cat's owners, too.  Take care of yourselves.

I dropped off Foster Kitten #4 today to get the snip-snip, and also stay for an adoption event... might be the last time we see him.

while I'm cool with that, I do get a little sad each time we say bye... almost guilty- that after giving them the best home we can, we're casting them out to some stranger.

OMG.    That one where they're holding paws!

I had to get a new refrigerator, and while they were delivering/installing yesterday I left the front door propped open.  Went to close it and realized a cat wearing a bow tie had wandered in.

Look at those cheeks. Definitely someone near you is missing their cat.

I don't think he's lost.  Unfortunately many people around here think it's OK to let their cats out during the day.  Drives me crazy, but nothing I can do about it.  I think I saw this fella on my fence last year, though he wasn't dressed formally at the time.

Your cats probably have parties when y'all are out of town, and this gentleman got the date mixed up.

Daughter brought home a cat about a year ago.  It was six or eight weeks old.  We named her Ashie, and Its pretty clear the cat wants nothing to do with people, except for a certain time when she wants attention.  Daughter had her spayed the other day (finally). I'm guessing the cat will not never want anything to do with people.

A few weeks ago, the wife brings a kitten home from work.  Wife and daughter both work at a senior care facility where the adoption place takes them to show off.  Obviously, it works.  I named the new kitten Nurple, and he is the best.  Very affectionate and loves the attention of everyone, including the 5 year old twins.  He likes to sleep in their room and "head butt" in the mornings.  I love Nurple.  He's only 10 weeks old, but he has the potential to be the best cat ever.

I wonder if Winston will grow into those ears.

The cuteness overload is just painful.
The good thing is that we will be able to keep tabs on Winston. The girl adopting him is 1 of my daughters classmates.  She previously adopted 1 of our kittens named “Buzz” about a yr ago.  She created an instagram account JUST for Buzz & we've gotten to see pictures of him.

Those guys are ridiculous!

Forgot to have mentioned our own kitten fosters #5 & 6.... Lenny & Squiggy- brother and sister we took in at 3 weeks (so tiny!) from the ACC over a month ago.

Having problems uploading pics...but will try again later.

it is going to be REALLY hard to give these guys up.

they came to us so young and small, they've really grown up with us. so sweet, ridiculously cute and just all around great, socially happy and easy cats.
