Cato June will move to WLB if Brooks can't go (1 Viewer)

The Bucs have practiced all week with strongside linebacker Cato June moving over to Brooks' spot at weakside linebacker and Quincy Black starting at June's spot. Adam Hayward has been Brooks' backup the past two seasons. He was forced to come out of the game against the Saints because of cramps from dehydration.
With enough time to prepare this week, the Bucs have decided to move June to WLB this week and insert Quincy Black at SLB, rather than continuing to throw Matt McCoy and Adam Heyward to the wolves at the Will. It should be stressed that Brooks has yet to be ruled out this week. This is information our subscribers have had since Wednesday afternoon. From Wednesday's Reading the Defense...

Don't wait too long this week to confirm the status of the hamstring injury to Tampa Bay WLB Derrick Brooks and miss out on grabbing Cato June (if he's available). Though Brooks has been as durable as they come in his long and distinguished career, a hamstring injury won't be easy to recover from at his age. Though the Bucs inexplicably kept Cato June on the strong side and brought in the usually disappointing Matt McCoy at the Will, it's very possible that June moves over to the Will (with Quincy Black playing SLB as he did late last season) if Brooks is out for any length of time. Given that June was already seeing some nickel snaps before the injury, he could be in line to rack up tackles until Brooks returns. As for Brooks, the presence of June in some nickel packages doesn't bode well for big stats when he returns to health.

And this morning's Eyes of the Guru...

Derrick Brooks hasn't missed a start in over a decade but that may come to an end this week. He came up lame with a hamstring injury in week one and is questionable at best for this weeks match up with Atlanta. Tampa Bay plugged in Matt McCoy at WLB when Brooks left the game, but with time to prepare the could go a different direction this week. If Brooks can't go, don't be surprised if Cato June shifts over to his natural WLB spot with Quincy Black getting the call at SLB. There has been a lot of speculation since June came to the team that he was brought there to be the eventual replacement for Brooks. If this hamstring injury proves to be a serious one, the timetable for that move could be stepped up. If you have Brooks on your roster it would be a good idea to handcuff him with June before there is an announcement and the competition for his services becomes steep...

Roy Cummings, of The Tampa Tribune, reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers LB Derrick Brooks (hamstring) did not participate in practice Friday, Sept. 12. He will be a game-time decision for Week 2.

so is it a gimmee that because Black is OLB (SAM) that his value won't be worth much? There was alot of talk that Black and or the new rookie they drafted Geno Hayes would be the heir apparent to Derrick Brooks. So will Black or Hayes have any real value if they end up as SAMs - not sure of the history of SLB in Tampa. Sorry for the slight hijack!

There are no guarantees, but if it's Black, Ruud, June, then Black is very unlikely to be an every-down linebacker. His value will be similar to that of Ryan Nece and June himself last season. Probably not rosterable, except in very deep leagues and then likely as a backup. All that depends on June, however. It's possible that Black could play every down if it's a Black, Ruud, Hayes lineup -- though that looks unlikely today.

is there any chance that brooks will miss a significant amount of time or are we just talk about this week
Brooks has been superhuman for 13 years. But, once a player (any player) shows up on the injury report his production drops. So whether he starts or not, its going to be a negative. June was proven at that position in INDY but let's see what he does in Tampa.

For now, at least next week seems to be in jeopardy. There was a note posted in the Shark Pool that Brooks had a major announcement to make on his web site (with the speculation including a potential retirement). There was no announcement posted this week and Brooks didn't sound ready to hang it up late this week.Whether he can practice Wednesday will be the next piece of information. He didn't practice Friday either, so he's nearly certain to be inactive tomorrow.

What's the story with Quincy Black? I recognize that he's got an ageless veteran in Brooks ahead of him, but he's not even getting many part time reps that I can see. Does he have any sort of future?
