CB Sauce Gardner, IND (2 Viewers)

I've seen enough. Sauce should be in the conversation for DPOY and should be a shoe-in for DROY.

Should be DRotY

Most sacks by rookies this season:

Aidan Hutchinson 9.5
James Houston 8.0
George Karlaftis 6.0
Kayvon Thibodeaux 4.0
Jaquan Brisker 4.0

Tariq Woolen’s final rookie season stats:

• 644 coverage snaps
• 68 targets
• 38 receptions allowed (549 yards)
• 16 passes defensed
• 6 INT

Sauce Gardner’s final rookie season stats:

• 642 coverage snaps
• 73 targets
• 33 receptions allowed (344 yards)
• 20 passes defensed
• 2 INT

All Pro. Best coverage player of the year according to PFF.

Across the board DROY, according to PFF. Hutchinson and Woolen were runners-up.

Chris Jones was DPOY according to PFF. Myles Garrett and Micah Parsons were runners-up.

Sauce is in the conversation for DPOY, though.

He’s so so good. Best pick in the draft IMO.

He’s the Jets new Revis. Totally changes what you can do on defense with a corner his caliber. The Jets knocked their draft out of the park in 2022.

I love Hutch and it was a great pick for Detroit but I did want them to draft Sauce. Hutch looks like he will become a consistent top 10 edge defender for a decade. Sauce looks like he will be the best cover CB in the league for the next decade.

Jets got one right!

Sauce lived up to it and more. Going to be a huge help transforming this team into a winner. Go get D. Carr yesterday.
The jets draft this year looks REALLY REALLY good. Like new standard good.

Garrett Wilson, Sauce, breece hall all looked great. Jermaine Johnson had moments where he showed his talent. Ruckert and Mitchell even got in a bit.

Similar to the Micah Parsons/Penei Sewell debate. Missed out on an All Pro. Took the guy who will anchor the line for a decade. Not really a wrong answer, they seem completely comfortable getting their dudes.

Bosa and Sauce are locks for DPOY and DROY
I don't see Bosa as a lock. Frankly, I wouldn't even have picked him as a 1st team all-pro. Myles Garrett (just like he was better than TJ Watt last year) keeps getting screwed because he's not on a playoff team, but beyond him, I would argue Parsons effects the game more than Bosa.

No real problem if Bosa wins, but "lock" just seems strong to me. He has had an excellent season.

Then again, Mahomes got 49 out of 50 1st team votes for QB, and I would have voted Josh Allen (who also somehow finished behind Hurts) over him, as I think Buffalo is actually a mediocre team, that he has been carrying for months.

Sauce was there from day 1, and virtually eliminated whomever he covered all season long. Teams avoided that side of the field for a legit reason.

43% reception %
14 pass break ups and 2 picks
52.5 passer rating allowed

Not only top rookie CB, but top CB on the season hands down. Hutch is in consideration, but DROY and ROY is Gardner's in my opinion. Not sure DPOY is in play for him.

I often wonder what the perception of Garrett would be if he weren't on the Browns. I feel like he's been the best non-Aaron Donald defensive player for several years now.

I think it's tough to shake the image of him nearly braining Mason Rudolph for no good reason. Easier to have Parsons or Bosa front and center. Not to mention the Wattage from T.J.

Still fuming Caserio and the hapless Texans selected Stingley over Sauce. Talk about a whiff that's going to haunt them for years to come.

makes up pretty much going o-fer 2020 and blowing the #2 overall in 2021.

I forgot about that, woof. How was Stingley this year?

Injury prone as advertised. Didn't seem like a difference maker when out there but that could've been Lovie's defensive scheme. Definitely not a #3 pick.

never understood why Sauce wouldnt travel to cover the other team's #1 ala Revis Island - sounds like Glenn is going to fix that. Why pay a guy all that to just have teams easily avoid - Saleh was stubborn on that issue

Colts secondary went from being a huge question mark to arguably one of the best in the league! Charvarius "Mooney" Ward, Kenny Moore, Jaylon Jones, and now Sauce. Anarumo is gonna run man coverage comfortably and blitz the hell out of teams now. Should be exciting. Hopefully Danny Dimes doesn't revert to NYG Danny Dimes and can continue his comeback player of the year season.

The colts were exposed this weekend. D. Jones has a fumbling problem and when sped up he will turn the ball over. The trick will be to take advantage early of the mistakes and score early and you have a recipe to beat the colts.
I say all of this as a Colts fan hoping we can get early leads and lean on JT rather than Daniel Jones.

For the first time this year the Colts OL didn't do their job. JT couldn't find much room to run and they allowed 5 sacks and just as many pressures.

D. Jones' fumbling issues are not new. INT he has not been too bad with in the past. To me it look like a team trying too hard to overcome the mistakes. They looked in panic mode. I believe if they would have run the ball more they would have been fine.

They did the same thing in the game JT ran for 150+ yards and 3 scores. They got really cute in the 2nd quarter and kept passing against the Titans and had 2 or 3 consecutive 3 and out drives. It was very obvious if they hand it off there was nothing the Titans could do to stop the Colts.

When the OL isn't doing its job, the whole house of cards can fall. JT can't find room, Daniel Jones is sacked or pressured all day, which leads to turnovers. I think the Colts will be fine and correct it, but I don't agree with your reasoning. I'll jump out of this conversation now. It's kind of useless.

Yeah part of that problem Is predictability. The colts got behind abandoned the run and the Steeers started teeing off on them. Daniel jones was pressured often, fumbled, and threw too many interceptions.

Hop out all you want.

Jets fan of 50+ years here. I have 3 jerseys - Mo Lewis, Gastineau and Sauce. I'll try to give as balanced a take as I can....

1) An elite shut down cover. Definitely changes how the OC's approach a game.
2) The Jets, until recently and still not completely, never put him on ONE WR all game and OC's could just move their guy to other parts of the field where they weren't his assignment. I never understood this.
3) Great team guy. Does stuff off the field, great with kids and the fans. Wanted to be a Jet (which isn't common).

4) 3 career interceptions in 55 games. Sure, some of that is they didn't throw his way....but still. For an "elite" corner, that's mysteriously low.
5) Not a good tackler at all. And again, sure, that's not his game....but it was glaring at times.

6) The contract and cap space did not make sense when this season fell on it's face. I'm guessing they though Glenn would have a more immediate impact and that's why they threw the bag at him?
7) He was not having a great season, injured and spotty performance. And I think he's had 3 concussions in his career.
8) 2 first rounders and AD Mitchell is a huge haul. Especially when a guy like DeAndre Hopkins in his prime got like a 4th rounder or something?

Summary: I hope the new scenery kick starts some of the sluggish play this season and I'm always going to be a fan. I can't complain about the return they got for him, but it's tiring knowing there's yet another rebuild ahead and the next 3 years are already in the trash.

I think it's a good trade for both teams. I give the Jets an A- and the Colts a B- with the possibility of an A. People complained about the increased number of holding and PI penalties on Gardner the last two years, but I think you're going to see that more from losing teams than winning teams, for a variety of reasons I won't explore here. What Gardner brings to the Colts is flexibility. If they want to play more man they can. They can blitz more often, or not, and just rush four now. They can let him play the other team's number 1 and play other schemes in the secondary against the rest. When Ward is back, with the addition of Saurce Gardner, along with Kenny Moore and Bynum, the Colts secondary is elite. On paper this trade looks like a win/win for both teams. Only time will tell if it truly is.

I hope the two 1st round picks are low. My feeling is that a 25 year old bird in hand is worth more than two in the bush, plus an airhead WR they didn't need.

Drake London caught 2 of his 4 targets for 26 yards, as well as a two-point conversion, across 17 matchups against Sauce Gardner, per @NextGenStats.

Against all other #Colts defenders, London caught all 4 of his targets for 78 yards and a TD.

Noah Compton
As Landon mentions here, London’s TD that ended up being guarded by LB Germaine Pratt looked like a coverage bust by Gardner, however context (that he provides in a reply) is needed.

Quick (international) turnaround, new scheme, etc. Still a promising debut. No concern at all.

Landon Oliver
To add context though the TD on Pratt was Gardeners fault for carrying Pitts instead of London.

This is why film will always trump analytics.

Landon Oliver
Also it was game 1 on a new team in a new place with a new playbook. Sauce is a stud.

Noah Compton
Not in the business of fulfilling agendas/pushing narratives! Stats are never be-all and end-all.

Lou Anarumo was more aggressive in playcalling, likely byproduct of newfound confidence on boundary. Not absolving Gardner of the aforementioned coverage bust.
