Cedric Benson a worthy start? (1 Viewer)

With TJ's playing status up in the air, could this be the week patient Cedric owners were waiting for? I can see a big game from him this week.

Depending on your options, CB is worthy of a start regardless if TJ starts or not. My guess he will get more carries this week than any other week, and I like the matchup.

My opponent in the SB is playing him, along with LT.He's been weak at RB2 all year and looks like he'll finally have a good compliment to LT this week.ETA: Go Peterson!!!!!

FWIW Some of the local chatter here on talk radio is that TJ and Moose will both rest from here out to get healthy for the playoffs.

I'm starting him at flex... but then have to bench one of Colston, Boldin, or Driver. Right now I'm leaning toward benching Boldin. I just feel that Benson will get a lot of touches this week, and against a subpar Run D.

Depends on the options of course, but i cant imagine many teams in their SBs where Ced Benson is thier best choice. In a flex league maybe.

I would be cautious. This team love Adrian Peterson as well, so we're still gonna see some splits. Also every time it seems like a no-brainer to hand Benson the ball 30 times and see what he can do, for some reason Lovey doesnt do it.

Benson is hardly tearing it up this year when given the opportunity, 3.8 y/c. He's come on late, but i'd still be careful.

I generally don't believe in throwing wild cards during the playoffs unless there is some overriding reason to do it (catastrophic injury). I think those kinds of plays rarely come off, and when they dont you are left scratching your head for the rest of your life wondering why you benched the guy that got you there.

As long as Jones is inactive for the game I will probably start Benson this week over Tiki (LT is my #1 RB). My league only rewards yards at 1 point for every 25 yards rushing and receiving so Tiki is the #21 scoring RB in my league (as opposed to 7th in FBG scoring).

I may put him in for Alexander as well. Deactivation of Jones would be the clincher, but I doubt that's going to happen. I'd do it in a heartbeat if I knew Benson would get 20 carries. So I'll continue to fret over the decision . . .

If TJ is out CB is going in. He is going to rip that team. CB is just drooling at the mouth to blow someon up and this is the week to do it.....

I'm starting him over Tatum Bell and Thomas Jones, but that's not as risky as some of the other decisions I've seen being made in this thread. I'm worried about FWP too, but I don't know if I could start Benson over him (Same reason I'm probably not starting Dayne over FWP in my other league).

If I had Benson, I would not hesitate to start him against the Lions.

Jones might not play, not because of injury, but simply bcasue the Bears don't need to win, so why risk more injury?

I expect Benson to easily eclipse 100 and score a few times.

Wish I could wait to hear on TJ. I will either start Taylor tonight or Benson. I usually try to make all decisions without looking at my opponent, but it is tough this week. I am facing LT, so I figure I need to make a choice based on upside. 2 guys may get their first start for me all season. Dayne and Benson. Dayne is for sure in, but still tossing around CT or Benson. T. Bell, and Addai are on the bench.

Bears HC Lovie Smith said he will approach this week's game at Detroit like any other, despite having clinched home field advantage throughout the playoffs. He has not considered resting some starters to energize the team's playoff run. "We want to stay as sharp as possible," Smith said. "There's no reason for a vacation, guys. We have a game to play, and it's kind of as simple as that," he said.

Bad News Bears: No Plan to Rest Starters

ETA: The Bears site's last official injury report is still Wednesday's (Jones QUES).

:lmao: This isn't super promising for those of us wanting Benson to get max touches. That said; I still think that a banged up TJ is unlikely to be too heavily involved the next week or two. Thats just a hunch, but why play him a ton if he's hurting and you don't need the wins?

Lovie's statement suggests TJ remains the starter, but even a half vs. the Lions (when the Bears will likely be holding the lead anyway) can result in good numbers for Benson. Putting the ball in Grossman's hands with the lead will be flirting with disaster so putting up 200+ on the ground is quite possible.

From today's Sun Times:

Running back Thomas Jones (ribs, questionable) also practiced, but Cedric Benson should get a big workload at Detroit,

Here's some more news on this. So do we listen to Lovie or the newspaper. I'd watch this one closely.

RB Thomas Jones (ribs) returned to practice Thursday, but the Chicago Sun-Times reports that RB Cedric Benson "should get a big workload at Detroit."

The newspaper has consistently suggested that Benson will get plenty of carries this week, regardless of Jones' health status.

My thoughts...

Logically it makes sense to rest Jones and let Benson carry the load so Jones can get healthly. Unfortunately Lovie doesn't work with logic. If he was, Benson, not Jones, would have been running the ball when the Bears were up by 40+ points after half time vs. the 49ers. And Griese would see significant time at QB over the next 2 weeks. IMO, the coaching staff simply doesn't trust/like Benson at this point.

The other wild card in this debate is Thomas Jones and his strong desire to NOT give up his starting job to Benson. Jones isn't stupid...and he doesn't like Benson. He's known all year that if Benson were to get a lot of carries he could have a very big game. If Benson has a big game, Jones could find himself as the #2. (Imagine the media outrage, particularly in Chicago, if Benson has a over 100 yds rushing at multiple TDs?)

Benson has caused Jones to increase his willingness to play injured for the past 2 years. I don't think it is a coincidence that Jones has become a reliable player heath-wise over the past to seasons. Prior to that he was always injured. With that being said, I think Jones will tell the coaching staff he's healthy and wants to carry the load this Sunday....especially since he practiced Thursday. My opinion is that you can bank on Jones playing at least a half, if not the entire game. Benson will still come in every 3rd series.

And please don't trust the Sun-Times reports about Benson getting a big share of carries. They've said that for the past 3 weeks.

They have each had exactly 40 carries over the last 3 weeks regardless. I think you can expect Benson to get his share again this week whether or not Jones plays. If he was getting equal carries prior to the Bears clinching homefield it's difficult to see how that would change now that they have clinched and Jones is banged up. It's also important to remember that although Lovie has indicated he wants to play his starters he has qualified it by saying “If a player has an injury and he isn’t 100 percent ready to go, we won’t play him." Wouldn't Jones fall into that category? Lovie obviously has to balance the risk of injury with the desire to play his starters.

Very good points. I feel as though Jones will tell the coaching staff he's 100 percent ready to go
Because he doesn't want to loose his job? Because he and Cedric don't talk much? Because he doesn't want to see any public sentiment shift Benson's way.Because this scenario playing the lowly Lions is a potential 3 TD day for Benson, the new hero in Chi Town?Regardless, Chicago will play tough and my educated guess is Jones gets the start, gets his 10-12 carries, perhaps a score, Chicago is up 17 - 3 at the half and Jones sits. Or Jones simply rests? Benson and Peterson carry the load in the second half with Peterson in a few series and perhaps 3-5 carries. What I am really saying is that I'm rolling the dice on Benson this week. I would love to see Touchdowns  I wonder what the lastest news is coming out of Chicago?

The way I see it, Benson even last week barely played until the 4th quarter, yet ended with about 15 carries and a TD. Granted about 4 of those carries came in overtime. But also, does anyone think it is strange the TJ did not come in overtime.

Jones was injured, causing the debate in this thread.Latest news:

http://www.suntimes.com/sports/football/be...earnt23.article

Smith said everybody practiced Friday except receiver Muhsin Muhammad, who was excused for personal reasons....And Jones (ribs) said he expects to play, although his time might be limited. Smith would not reveal how much he plans to rest the starters.
The amount of playing time that Jones and/or Benson get is going to be a crap shoot. No one is going to know prior to the game.
