Vikings | Greenway to have an MRI

Mon, 14 Aug 2006 22:28:25 -0700

Updating previous reports, the Associated Press reports Minnesota Vikings rookie LB Chad Greenway (knee) will have an MRI test Tuesday, Aug.15, on his injured knee. Though he declined to speculate on the severity of the injury, Vikings' defensive coordinator Mike Tomlin said he felt "sick" for Greenway. "I'm disappointed for the kid," he said. "Injuries are a part of the game, and we accept that. But I feel bad for him."

Vikings' No. 1 pick feared lost for the season

Rookie linebacker Chad Greenway injured his left knee covering an Oakland kickoff return late in the first quarter.

The Vikings might have suffered a loss far greater than their 16-13 preseason setback against Oakland on Monday night at the Metrodome.

Rookie linebacker Chad Greenway, the Vikings' first-round pick in the NFL draft, left the game in the first quarter because of an injury to his left knee. Greenway will have an MRI this morning, and indications Monday night were that it could be a season-ending tear to his anterior cruciate ligament.

Coach Brad Childress said the Vikings will "reserve judgment" until the results of the MRI come back.

Greenway wore a brace on his knee and had an obvious limp as he left the Vikings locker room. He said he wasn't sure he had a torn ligament.

"I haven't had anything done," he said. "I just know the coaches brought me off just to get me off the field. Right now it's up to the trainers, and hopefully I get back on the field as soon as possible. I don't know what it is right now."

Greenway was injured covering a kickoff with 4 minutes, 10 seconds left in the first quarter. He appeared to twist his knee awkwardly as an Oakland player blocked him.

Greenway hobbled off the field and was examined on the sideline before walking to the Vikings locker room. Many times an injured player will return to the sideline, but Greenway never reappeared.

"I just planted, and something kind of just happened where I twisted me knee," Greenway said. "I don't know exactly what happened."

Defensive coordinator Mike Tomlin did not want to speculate on the injury. "We'll hold our breath until the morning and let the tests [occur]," he said.

Greenway, whose parents were scheduled to be at the Metrodome on Monday night, said Sunday he expected to see extensive playing time with the second-team defense. But because of the injury he ended up getting only one play on defense, being used in a four-linebacker set with the first team.

"It's very disappointing," Greenway said. "It's something you can't control. It's just part of the game. It's something that happens, but we'll get something figured out tomorrow and see what happens."

Said Tomlin: "It's disappointing for him, but that's part of football. We go into it with our eyes open."

Greenway, a star at Iowa, was the 17th pick in the draft and has spent training camp as the backup weak-side linebacker behind E.J. Henderson. Childress said last week that Greenway would remain in the backup role for now, but clearly the hope was he would move into a starting role sooner rather than later. Greenway had seen action with the first team, albeit limited, in a 4-4-3 set designed for short-yardage situations.

Second-year linebacker Heath Farwell saw more time than expected Monday because of the injury to Greenway and finished with a game-high nine tackles.

"I talked to Chad in the locker room and just hope for the best," Farwell said. "It's a tough deal."

didn't look bad at all, his feet were in the air, didn't even look planted.

Who takes the WLB spot now?

I missed the play he was injured on. Did it look bad? Definatley doesn't sound good.
Yup....a killer in contract/dynasty leagues as this guy is a #1 draft choice, a starter a WLB, who suddenly becomes a "draft and follow". Let's hope he recovers in time for next year's camp and doesn't become a DEF side of the ball "Kevin Everette clone."Next question: what does this do to the speculation that Nick Barnett moves into the Sam in an effort to get the three best backers on the field: Barnett, Hodge and Greenway.Who is now the best third LB and how does that effect Barnett? Does Barnett ever move to the Will in this scenario?

WTF? Barnett and Hodge don't play for the Vikings. Put down the crack pipe.

NOT :goodposting: :wall: :bag:

solidifies E.J.Henderson's value this year, may bring Dontarrious Thomas back into the picture if Harris struggles.

Take it easy on me, it's early and I'm basically pissed that Greenway's down and I'm having to deal with the Barnett deal too. It's early this a.m. and the issues are cloudy. One at a time.

Yep, big bump for Henderson, as it should assure him the job all season long.

And I thought both Harris (very aggressive, looked quick in coverage) and Thomas looked solid last night. Thomas looked better than I thought he would, although it was against the Raider twos. The look Shell gave Walter after Thomas' pick was priceless.

Who do you think would be in on passing downs? Will EJ Henderson be able to produce at the level expected of a Tampa 2 WLB, or will Harris outproduce him?

Shucks! I'm trying to stay optimistic, but from the sound of things, its all but done, he's lost for the year.

Harris and Henderson are the nickel backers.I was pretty impressed with Harris last night. Whether it's because I wasn't expecting much or not is hard to say. :P With only a couple of series to go on, I'd expect Henderson to be much closer to Briggs LB2 production than Brooks LB1 numbers and Harris around Brackett numbers. Could change as both get more comfortable, but both should have pretty similar value.

I didn't pay much attention when the Vikes D was on the field, so I wasn't sure. I've got one in a dynasty league and the other (EJ) is available on waivers, along with Angelo Crowell, and it's also nearing roster cut time. So thanks for the info, that'll help :)

Jene, I apologize for not parsing this very well...am I reading this correctly that you rank the guys in question like the following:BrooksBrackettHarrisHendersonBriggs?

THe Vikings have a great string of luck with thier rookie Lbers. :shakes head:

At least the new coaches seem to be able to develop players better than the past staffs have done.

Thanks for the clarification...sadly (or I guess happily as the case may be) this means these guys are virtually useless to me...but I appreciate the insights...

With rookie linebacker Chad Greenway out for the year, the Vikings' depth at the position appears iffy. Now Heath Farwell, Kyle McKenzie and Marcus Lawrence have a legitimate chance to make the roster. There aren't many options in free agency, either. The most notable name is Greg Favors, an eight-year veteran who last played for the Jacksonville Jaguars. With Greenway expected to be placed on injured reserve, the Vikings likely will fill the spot with a linebacker. Greenway's injury also means Dontarrious Thomas or Rod Davis will have to be a swing guy and show position flexibility.
Heath Farwell saw extensive playing time with Greenway out and certainly impressed the coaching staff. Farwell was all over the field and had a game-high nine tackles.Among the other draft picks, cornerback Cedric Griffin (second round) intercepted a pass and broke up another; defensive end Ray Edwards (fourth round) had a sack and forced a fumble on a goal-line play in the fourth quarter; and Greg Blue (fifth round) had six tackles and a sack.
