CHANCE FOR HOPE FOUNDATION - 2019 Enchanted Night photos linked on page 5 (1 Viewer)

It was a HUGE success. Exceeded our expectations by pretty much every measure. More people showed than we anticipated (500+), people stayed later than we thought (party was still going after 11pm, and this is on a weeknight), attendees had more fun than we anticipated (we knew people would enjoy it more than pretty much any stuffy charity gala, but we heard a lot of "best party ever" comments), and we raised more money than we ever imagined that we could. We were exhausted when it was all over, but we were flying. Chance's spirit was with us that night. We are going to be able to do some amazing things with the money that we raised.

We're still going through all photos for a gallery page. I'll link it here once it is up. I know Ignoramus and his wife made it out. I only got to speak with him briefly, but they seemed to be having fun (even if they did have to travel to the burbs).

Our first big fundraising event will be on April 23 in Houston - the Chance for Hope 80s Prom Party, featuring a performance by The Spazmatics.

Here is one of the items that will be auctioned off: Gibbons Guitar

If you're in or around the Houston area, mark your calendars for April 23rd. It's going to be a lot of fun (i.e., not a stuffy charity gala).
Awesome on the Gibbons guitar. One of those moments that I wish I was a normal FBG with infinite means
We were hoping to get $1,500 for the Gibbons guitar, even though it's worth a fair amount more, because it appeals to a fairly narrow group of individuals and we didn't know who would be there. There was a bidding war and it ended up going for $7,000!

For those who are following along, here is the report we just emailed out to our donor list and posted on Facebook. The fundraising event was a huge success. Many thanks to all the folks here in the FFA who have helped us during this first year of our Foundation (we incorporated in April 2014 and had our launch event in October 2014). If you'd like to be included on our e-mail list so you can receive periodic updates, feel free to PM me your email address. Also, you can like our FB page and stay updated that way: www.facebook.com/chanceforhopefoundation Thanks!

We are thrilled to report that our first major fundraising event, the Chance for Hope 80s Prom Party, raised over $150,000! You are all so amazing! To all of our event sponsors, donors, volunteers and participants, as well as every single one of you who attended, please accept our heartfelt thanks for making this evening such a smashing success. The event exceeded every expectation, and that is due entirely to you, our generous supporters.

Please know that every dollar that we receive counts, and helps our Foundation fulfill its mission. All of your generous donations go directly to provide support services for pediatric cancer families and to fund critically needed pediatric cancer research. Importantly, all Board and Executive members of the Chance for Hope Foundation donate their time to the Foundation, which allows us to minimize overhead costs and maximize the good works of our organization.

In just one year, the Chance for Hope Foundation has accomplished so much. With the tremendous success of this event, we will be able to further our reach in helping pediatric cancer families. In 2015, we plan to add an additional Chance for Hope Residence, which will bring us to three apartments that provide temporary housing absolutely free of charge! We have also earmarked $50,000 to fund pediatric cancer research at Texas Children's Hospital, and will be announcing a major research grant in the coming months. Additionally, beginning in June, we will be delivering meals to the in-patient cancer floor at Texas Children's Hospital on a bi-monthly basis. We are excited to announce that we have formed a partnership with Amazon Grill to provide healthy and delicious meals to these families as part of this meal delivery program.

Once again, we so very much appreciate the incredible support the Chance for Hope Foundation has received during its inaugural year. It is only through you, our cherished friends and supporters, that our Foundation is able to impact the lives of pediatric cancer families. Thank you for joining us in our mission, and we look forward to continuing this wonderful journey with you.

I am daily inspired and in awe of all you've done BB- especially in the face of so much.

Congrats on the well deserved success of the event!

Check out this cool informational banner stand.

Thanks Fat Uncle Jerry Buss!

That's a great display!

Congrats on a super successful event BB, that's an amazing amount of money to raise, and an even more amazing list of what it will be used for.

The pics are great too, looks like everyone really had a great time - my favorite was the Devo guy.

Many thanks EF and DB! To be honest, the event theme and entertainment was so successful that we're freaking out a bit about what to do for next year that won't pale in comparison.

Any ideas for great party themes and/or really, really good theme/cover bands are welcome.

hipster circus. pretty sure it's a real thing... and people seem to love them. basically stupid human tricks done by guys with curlicue moustaches and suspenders. guh. when I type that out, it just sounds horrendous.

Spent the day delivering delicious meals from Amazon Grill (local restaurant) to patients and families at the in-patient cancer center at our local Children's Hospital. Sundays are tough for families because the on site food court is closed and most of the restaurants within walking distance are as well. The only easily accessible option is McDonalds. Obviously not the healthiest choice. Really appreciate all the donations and other support that allow us to provide this much needed service, which is extremely appreciated by the families.

We have also leased our third Chance for Hope Residence and our first family has already moved in. All three Residences have been fully booked since the program's inception and we have already been able to help families from multiple states and even Puerto Rico.

Also, tomorrow we have our third meeting with the heads of a research team at Texas Children's Hospital regarding an exciting research effort. One of the nation's preeminent cancer surgeons will be attending on our behalf to help us vet the program, as will a pediatrician, a registered nurse and an attorney who specializes in overseeing the administration of research grants as part of his role as counsel for a major research institution. All of them are providing their expertise free of charge. We want our donors to know that we are thoroughly evaluating all grant requests and are exercising great care over the funds that have been donated and earmarked for research funding. We are hoping to announce a major grant in the coming weeks!

Just wanted to keep you all apprised of our efforts. Thank you all again for everything.

Today's announcement: We are extremely excited to announce the opening of our FOURTH Chance for Hope Residence! Our Foundation’s residence program now provides over 1,400 nights of free lodging each year to children with cancer and their families who travel to Houston for pediatric cancer treatments. We are only able to provide this critical service to pediatric cancer families through the generosity of our cherished supporters and donors. Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts for your efforts in helping these precious children and their families!

Also, the theme for this year's annual fundraising event is STUDIO 54! Saturday, April 9 for folks in the area who want to come out and tie one on.

I've always wanted to support charity by doing coke off a stripper's back.
At last year's 80s Prom, we had a "Candy Bar" featuring a bunch of throwback 80s candy. For this year's event, I am strenuously arguing for the return of the candy bar idea, except this time with narcotic looking candy and a big sign over the table that says "THE PHARMACY."

I read those two posts in rapid succession... must admit a little disappointed with what follows "among other great items" after reading RHE's post.

We're still soliciting live auction items! Just need to check whether RHE's proposed item would be tax deductible.

BB- Are you guys getting any significant benefit from Amazon Smile? Just curious if you get a decent bump around the holidays, or if it's even noticeable.

Well my wife never rests.  On the heels of an extremely successful annual benefit, she is now planning a cancer awareness event.  But we need help!

The Chance for Hope Foundation is looking for someone to design an event logo for a fun run (5k/10k) on September 10.  It is an awareness event that will be part of the Go Gold for Children with Cancer month (September).  As such, it's not a fundraising event - our focus will be pediatric cancer awareness and education.  Our hope is to brand this well and grow it into a successful event that is held every year for the foreseeable future.  So the event logo (which we'll have to live with) is key.  We're looking for a graphic designer to help us with the logo, but due to our limited budget, one who will work on a pro bono or discounted rate (couple hundred bucks).  If you or someone you know might be interested in the project, please let me know. We have some idea about how we want the logo to look but lack the artistic talent to put it onto the page. We are happy to recognize the artist and provide a web link to his or her business on our website as in in kind supporter.

Thanks!

Could you get one of the kids to make something for you?  I get wanting something professionally done, but it would reinforce the point of the event.

Interesting idea.  However, I can't figure out an appropriate way when we're doing meal delivery or having a family stay in our apartments to ask them whether their child likes to draw.  It would be easier if we had an art program (those exist) and could hold some sort of contest.  We actually partner with two children's cancer art programs as art is displayed in each of our apartments.  Perhaps a good idea for the future.

p.s.  We have some fairly fleshed out ideas of what we'd like for the logo, so any taker wouldn't have to design from scratch.  Thanks for your consideration!

For those of you who have been following our Foundation, I thought I'd post our 2016 year in review.  It's amazing how much we've grown in the two years since our launch.

Expansion of the Chance for Hope Residence Program

In 2016, our Foundation expanded the Chance for Hope Residence Program to four individual residences which together provide over 1,400 nights of free lodging per year.  Our Chance for Hope Residences are fully-furnished apartments that provide temporary housing at no cost to children and their families traveling to the Texas Medical Center for pediatric cancer treatment.

Chance for Hope Foundation Awards $75,000 Research Grant to Texas Children's Cancer Center

This past November, the Chance for Hope Foundation Pediatric Cancer Research Fund awarded its second major medical research grant.  This $75,000 grant will fund critical pre-clinical research and testing of new drugs designed to treat brain cancer, which is now the deadliest form of cancer in children.

Celebrating the Success of Our First Go Gold Cancer Awareness Event

As part of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in September, our Foundation introduced its first major pediatric cancer awareness event - the Chance for Hope Go Gold Fun Run.  Attended by more than 500 participants and supporters, this 5K/10K race combines family, fitness and fun for a great cause, and will now be an annual event!

Meal Delivery Program Doubles in Frequency

As part of its support services mission, our Foundation delivers delicious and healthy meals from Amazon Grill to patients and families on the inpatient cancer floor at Texas Children's Hospital. In 2016, we expanded our service to a now monthly delivery schedule on Sundays, when the TCH food court and many local restaurants are closed.

Third Annual Back to School Gift Card Drive Brings Smiles

This past year, the Foundation conducted its third annual Back to School Gift Card drive, collecting Target gift cards to distribute to children with cancer who are unable to attend school in their home communities.  This was our Foundation's very first program and we are proud to report that it continues to brighten the days of these courageous cancer warriors.

And we have some exciting things planned for 2017.  Stay tuned!

I want you all to know how much we appreciate your continued interest and support.  We are in the middle of our annual fundraising drive and I know there are a number of FBGs who have made generous donations.  From the bottom of my heart, thank you!

UPDATE:

My wife and I sat down for a 30 minute interview which aired today without commercial interruption on four FM stations here in the Houston area. If you are interested in checking it out, you can stream the interview at this link (look for the March 12 Chance for Hope entry):

http://www.houstonseagle.com/news/public-affairs/ktht-for-your-information/P4mztJ4WWJxCA5wQVX5zAJ/

We talk about Chance and why we founded the charity, how our organization serves pediatric cancer families, and our upcoming fundraising event, The Space Ball. I had some difficulty talking about Chance at the beginning of the interview, but once my wife took over, it was smooth sailing from there.

Yeah, great stuff biggie.  I know a lot of folks here have donated to Chance for Hope in the past, listen the interview if you want to hear all the incredible things they are doing with your donations.

Very nice interview.  You were both very well spoken.
That's kind of you to say. I struggled at the beginning due to a combination of nerves and the fact that I still have great difficulty talking about Chance without getting choked up. It got better after that when we started talking about the Foundation.

Thanks fatguy. None of this would be possible without the support of our donors. So appreciate everything you all have done to get this charity off the ground and to where it is today. We've already raised over $750,000 in our relatively short tenure if you can believe it.  And you can rest assured that the money goes to fund support services and pediatric cancer research as our organization does not have a single paid employee or an office.

You both did very well, I thought I heard a catch in your voice in the beginning.  Personally, I don't know how you are able to talk about it without choking up more.  I think it helps that you are both so passionate about Chance's cause but I really can't imagine the emotional roller coaster it must put you on.  I really wish I lived closer, I would love to go to one of the events like the run or the Space Ball.

Also, just a reminder to anyone who doesn't know, you can set up Chance for Hope Foundation as your designated charity with Amazon Smile and a portion of everything smile eligible, which is most things, will be donated to your designated charity.  Just make sure you change your bookmark to https://smile.amazon.com/
