Changing Scoring rules in between seasons (1 Viewer)

Half of our DYNASTY league has started talking about adding Special Teams Yards to our scoring. We already score ST touchdowns, and their argument is that since we do TDs we should do yards also.

My problem with this is that if we added ST yards then it would devalue a lot of the players already rostered (and who have been traded, traded for, etc) so the integrity of the league would be questioned. Is it right to reward somebody for having a bunch of backup RBs (or WRs/DBs) that all of a sudden are equal to a RB2/3 because we are counting ST yards?

I am sure that people have dealt with this before- can you please give me your arguments for or against?

Sidenote- we obviously would not be changing mid-season, it would be this coming offseason.

I know this wont help you, but this is why I prefer redraft leagues....we have adjusted our scoring alot over the years, always at the end of the year, and not benefitted or harmed any team in the process. Good luck figuring out how to do it WITHOUT changing the dynamics of the league...I dont see it happening.

We didn't have PPR in my one league, but once we decided that's the way we wanted to go, we did an incremental increase each year.Say we wanted 1 point per reception, we did 0.2 PPR the first year, 0.4 the next, 0.6, then 0.8 and finally 1.0, or you could do 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1.0 You get the gist of it.If it's dynasty, then figure out what you want the scoring in ST yardage to be, and break it up over 3-four years of increases so nobody gets screwed right away.

You either need to reach a unanimous agreement on whatever change is being proposed (even mid season, provided everyone agrees there is no problem), or reach an agreement to implement the change after a multi-year hold period, such that everyone has an opportunity to prepare adequately.

We had this same issue come up in our dynasty. I was against it and argued as follows:

Here's my problem with return yards. We would be specifically increasing the point productions of a handful of players, while the rest of the players, at the same positions, will not have their point productions increased. That's totally different than saying let's make passing touchdowns 5 points now, because that stat affects all quarterbacks. Return yards affect some running backs and some wide receivers.

An example: last year Nate Burleson had 590 yards in kick returns and 658 yards in punt returns. That's 1,248 return yards and at 50 yards/point, we'd be adding 24.96 points to his season total. That may not sound like much, but here's the effect - he finished as the 30th ranked WR in our league last year, but with return yards added he would finish as the 22nd ranked WR. Here are the numbers:

Before return yards

20. Cotchery, Jerricho NYJ 211.00

21. McDonald, Shaun DET 211.00

22. Bowe, Dwayne KCC 199.50

23. Driver, Donald GBP 199.30

24. Holmes, Santonio PIT 198.20

25. Berrian, Bernard CHI 195.10

26. Galloway, Joey TBB 194.50

27. Johnson, Andre HOU 193.10

28. Ward, Hines PIT 190.30

29. Chambers, Chris MIA 188.70

30. Burleson, Nate SEA 185.80

After return yards

20. Cotchery, Jerricho NYJ 211.00

21. McDonald, Shaun DET 211.00

22. Burleson, Nate SEA 210.78

23. Bowe, Dwayne KCC 199.50

24. Driver, Donald GBP 199.30

25. Holmes, Santonio PIT 198.20

26. Berrian, Bernard CHI 195.10

27. Galloway, Joey TBB 194.50

28. Johnson, Andre HOU 193.10

29. Ward, Hines PIT 190.30

30. Chambers, Chris MIA 188.70

Yes, no one else on that list had any significant return yards last year.

Other guys majorly effected by return yards would be Josh Cribbs, Ted Ginn, Jerious Norwood, Leon Washington, and Devin Hester. Instantly the owners of those players have a more valuable guy, while virtually all other RBs and WRs lose some ground in the rankings.

Seems unfair to me.
It was put to a vote and did not meet the 2/3s majority required for a scoring change.
