Charger ILBs Cooper and Wilhelm (1 Viewer)

Both put up solid if not overwhelming stats last year, are they both still starting this year and how do you like their chances?

Cooper is suspended for the first 4 games of the year.

Got both of them pegged for low end LB3s with low end LB2 upside.

I hope Waters starts for Cooper rather than Smith. Any word yet? Who would replace Merriman?

I wouldn't mind hearing some input on these guys without Merriman.
Posted in the Audible thread, but the Charger defense could be on the field longer and take more snaps in the base defense without Merriman. That improves the value of both players, and could push Wilhelm into the 90-95 solo tackle range.

Cooper and Wilhelm are probably the two weakest starters and the Chargers' defense (football-wise, not fantasy-wise).

Cooper is decent, but is suspended for the first four games. Derek Smith will probably start in his place.

Wilhelm is smart and is decent in coverage, but he is not very aggressive against the run and he has trouble shedding blocks. It'd be very nice to see Waters take his job by the end of the season.

Jyles Tucker and Marques Harris will be in the rotation at OLB now with Shaun Philips. Tucker is the guy to watch if your scoring system emphasizes sacks over tackles. He could get double digits if Cottrell is aggressive with him.

(KFFL) The San Diego Chargers have announced LB Shawne Merriman (knee) has informed the team he will not undergo surgery and will play in the 2008 season.

You don't go to 4 doctors unless you're looking for an answer you want to hear. Jene if he has the surgery in January what's the best possible scenario on his return?

If you aren't good enough to push Derek Smith v2008 for a job, you probably aren't good enough to be an impact player in the NFL.
I was hoping that Smith would be much better this year than he has been in recent years now that his eye is recovered. But he really looked horrible against the Seahawks. I'd like to see him beat a block just once.I don't know why they didn't get Waters any first-team reps so far during the preseason. He's looked better than either Smith or Wilhelm when he's played, albeit against third stringers.

Probably depends on the extent of the damage by then. If nothing changes, i.e. there's no additional ligament of nearby tissue damage, he should be good for training camp. If he blows out a knee and ends up with a torn ACL, nerve damage and additional posterolateral corner muscle and tendon damage, it's a multiple procedure, multiple rehab deal and his availability for the start of the season is dependent on when the blowout occurs.I don't think you can stabilize this type of injury with a brace. His knee, again assuming near complete tears, is loose in two spatial directions. Players have played without single ligaments, including a cruciate ligament, or with mid-grade strains of MCLs, PCLs etc. I'm not aware of a player who's held up and played at his usual level with multiple ligament strains/tears.I'm only a Holiday Inn Express orthopedist, but I think it's a disaster waiting to happen.
