Chargers say Gates could start year on PUP

Antonio Gates ran and made cuts on his surgically repaired foot in front of a trainer Monday, but Chargers coach Norv Turner says Gates is a candidate to begin the regular season on PUP.

It's the first time Gates has run in front of the media all offseason, but apparently the team isn't too encouraged. This is also the first time Turner has admitted how unclear Gates' status is. The All Pro estimates he's currently only 65-70%. Continue monitoring him closely before drafting him. Jul. 21 - 8:42 pm et

This came from a Rotoworld report, based on this article on chargers.com.At no point in the article does anyone mention the PUP, and in fact....

Turner said based on what he’s seen, he’s optimistic that Gates will be available when the Chargers kick off their regular season against the Carolina Panthers on September 7.

“That’s the plan all the way along, and he’s on schedule,” Turner said. “I would think if he doesn’t have a setback there’s a good chance that would happen. Based on the way he looked today and based on conversations and the progress he’s made over the last month, he’s ahead of schedule.”
I'm not sure where the PUP talk came from???

Shouldnt be a surprise...only 6 months ago the Chargers said Rivers, Hardwick, and Gates would all be 100% for camp, despite suffering a littany of injuries that typically take 1+ years to recover from.

Hardwick is likely PUP, Gates is likely PUP...we'll see where Rivers ends up.

I was going to make the same comment ... I was confused as I read this chargers.com fluff job in my reader and didn't recall anything about PUP. In fact, it was an over-the-top sunshine PR piece if anything (not hard to come by out here in the SoCal sports media ...)

The "Gates to the PUP" news comes from this earlier article.

Turner mentioned that Hardwick, tight end Antonio Gates and fullback Andrew Pinnock could start the season on the Physically Unable to Perform list. If a player begins training camp on the “PUP” list, they can be moved to the active roster at any time, even after one practice.
Seems like Turner might have been talking about putting Gates on the PUP for camp, rather than for the start of the season? This would somewhat make sense if they wanted to keep another body around, if we assume Gates doesn't really need the practice time.

These days I ignore the Rotoworld comments and go right to the link. They butchered the Gates article with their poor opinions.

The only PUP I have seen mentioned regarding Gates is camp/PUP, which is drastically different from the regular season-6 game PUP.

Rivers would start if there was a game this weekend. He does everything in practice I have been to, and nowhere have I read he isnt ready to go.

Good thing I picked up Volek in a dynasty league of mine...

From the local paper this morning:"I’ve been going full-go now for over a month,” Rivers said. ”There’s nothing I can’t do. There are times throughout the day I can’t tell which knee I hurt"

Not to hijack the thread, its about Gates, hopefully Gates will be ready to go, it sounds better then 50-50 at this point.

why? rivers is 100%. They have Newberry to fill in for hardwick, hardwick is much more likely than Gates to start the season on the PUP. Like ABorbley said camp PUP and season PUP are two different animals. You can come off the camp PUP at any time.

I'd be willing to bet that Gates is not on the PUP week1.

Not sure what RotoWorld is reporting, but the following News from Chargers.com essentially refutes everything.

Chargers.com

Gates is ahead of schedule and Norv is extremely excited to see him moving as he was!

They reported on NFL Network last night that Gates said his toe is at 65% right now. What that means for training camp and week 1... it's really a wait and see game.

Good news: Gates busy making great strides

ST. LOUIS – The best news for the Chargers last night came before their preseason game against the Rams.

With Philip Rivers throwing passes, Antonio Gates ran about 20 routes of varying types about an hour before the Chargers commenced their 7-6 loss.

“He looked really good,” Rivers said. “That's encouraging for us, and for him.”

Gates ran short and deep, full speed, cutting across the field and came in and out of breaks extremely strong. He walked off the field without a limp and less-than-usual discomfort afterward.

“I'll tell you what, it's starting to feel close to normal,” Gates said later. “It still gets sore, but the difference is I can go out and do some things . . . I haven't hit a wall. I feel more comfortable every time I go.”

This was the third time Gates has run routes this hard. He skipped doing so Thursday because of soreness. But he said last night was encouraging and he actually looked forward to seeing how he felt when he woke up in the morning.

He said, “I really feel more than ever I'll be ready” for the Sept. 7 season opener.

Does this sound like a situation where a guy wants off, but a vet coach like turner knows how difficult and debilitating a toe injury can be if not treated properly. My spidey sense says that they may PUP him, so that he can fully heal, and not keep pushing himself to get back if non-pupped and just injured. Gut feeling on this one.

??? Off what?Norv Turner will not place Gates on the PUP if the doctors say he can play. End of story on whether Norv is the one pushing for PUP.

Gates is extremely frustrated with level of improvement with his injury.

I highly doubt he'es on the regular season PUP. but maybe limited the first few games.
 I've been following the recovery of Gates very closely, and this is what I see in between the lines of the reporting on Gates. He can take a lot of pain, and will probably try to get up for games - but I'm not sure he'll be anywhere near 100% during September. We'll see how the foot responds once he starts planting/cutting on it in September. He could work through the soreness in the foot, or he could tear apart the surgical repair. Until he tests it with full contact, we just won't know how well he's recovered. Definitely a player to be careful of unless you can draft him at a significant discount - unlikely as few are discounting him enough due to this injury, IMO.

From Gates himself: Postcard
:D :goodposting: Illustrates exactly what I've been hearing/reading from multiple viewpoints:
My emotions fluctuate every day. I ran routes Monday and when I came back I was super sore. Then I went out Wednesday and that was the best I felt. Then I got sore again as I was going. I was like, “Oh, man, what's going on? Am I going too hard?” I went out and was planting that left foot and coming out of that route. I was able to do that for three or four routes, and then the pain started bad. It was really sore.

There are days I come in here and say, “I promise you I can't go today.” Then I warm it up, then I end up doing more than I expected. I have a tendency at this point when it feels good I tend to go harder and that gets me to the point where it hurts again.

Every day I'm asking the medical staff what they think. I know they're tired of me now.

MERRIMAN TO VISIT DR. ANDREWS; GATES OFF PUP LIST (9:41 a.m. ET)

Tight end Antonio Gates passed a physical Tuesday and practiced for the first time this training camp, but linebacker Shawne Merriman is visiting Dr. James Andrews in Alabama -- a trip that usually isn't a precursor of great news.

Merriman, who had arthroscopic surgery in March to repair cartilage in his left knee, has been experiencing continuing pain in that knee. Andrews performed the surgery, and team officials said this was a "follow-up exam," according to the North County (Calif.) Times.

Gates, who has been progressing well in his recovery from a left toe injury, was taken off the PUP list. He was pleased with Tuesday's practice, but was cautious about predicting his return. "I hate to look so far down the road because this is a tricky situation," Gates said in the Times. "It's one of those injuries where you have to really monitor and make sure I'm not overdoing it and doing nothing to have any setbacks."

Are we expecting to see Gates in the opener or is it all still speculation at this point?

Man, I have my first draft in 2 hours - the league scoring is favorable to stud TEs. I wish I had more info/certainty on Gates this season.

The league is loaded with productive TEs these days, you'll find better value if you wait and/or take somebody else. I highly doubt he'll finish no. 1, so I certainly wouldn't rank him as such.

One rule of thumb I "always" use going into any draft is, "If I'm looking for football players, I don't shop for them at hospitals."

Right Pasquino?

ETA: It's tough enough working through any season trying to avoid injuries. It's just not smart to actually draft them. You'll suffer every time.

If he's close to 100% at the beginning of the season, and falls in your draft, at what point is Antonio's possible production worth the risk? I'm thinking he's definitely worth it in the 6th round or later if you've already loaded up on RB's and WR's. A healthy Gates taken that late could potentially give you a very dominant team.

Why not just take a healthy TE? It's not worth the sweat.

They have become sloppy as of late, still the one of the first sites I check for NFL news, but I double check any important information concerning status of players before buying in.
