Chess Tournament- Round 5 pairings listed in Post #2 (6 Viewers)

Chaz beats Nick Vermeil
I accepted your invite on chess time. Apparently, I grade out at a 1200 or less player. After about 6 moves I follow no chess maxims because I don't know any except to develop pieces and then go from there. It's good to get my mind grinding. Good luck.

I'm pretty much the same. I watch chess video's on traps and such, but I can never remember them. I just develop at the beginning too, and try not to blunder early. I'm around 1200 on chess.com.

@scoobus defeats Tri-man. He got an early edge and just kept coming at me. I was always on the defensive and his attacks put me in a bad alignment of my pieces. My only hope was for him to blunder, but alas…

Just for the record I have never seen this in our games. For such a nice guy you are a mean, aggressive bully on the chessboard. :p

While I didn't get a chance to attack as I'd have liked, I was still holding my own until this: scoob moved a knight rather deep into my territory. I saw where he was headed into either position 1 or position 2. I moved a rook to cover both of those. Except ...I was looking at the wrong square for position 2. :wall: Position 2 was unprotected, and he moved his knight there, which allowed him to fork my king and my recently repositioned rook. A rather unique type of blunder.

Chaz beats shadrap. I think I played decent, but Chaz is superior. Thanks Chaz!!
Thanks Shadrap. I think the game was equal until I gained a tempo when you moved your A pawn up a square. Very defensive, well connected game. It felt like I was just playing defensive moves the whole game. I didn't have much of an attack. And going first was probably the biggest difference. Good game.

Any update on remaining Round 3 games?
Woz and I 25 moves in. Pretty even.
Yep. Moving along but not near an end game yet.
Draw. Good game.
Yeah, never felt like there was an advantage anywhere. Boring, good chess.
i've been having good luck with that Colle-Zukertort system on Lichess, but you never really let me get into the king side attack. Middle was just closed off.

Yeah I made the decision to take your knight on e5 midway through the game which I figured closed the middle and all but ensured a draw provided solid play.

Good review and instruction on the system.

I had seen the system before and (pats self on back) recognized the importance of E5. I got a little uncertain though after like move 5 so I figured mirroring BlowCrowes' moves couldn't result in much disaster as it seemed to ensure that the sniping bishops couldn't do much damage.

Solid but boring chess. I could see this being a nice opening for a lot of players. As black, I never even really considered my own attack at any point in the game and started to play for the draw in the middle game.

Generous resignation this morning by @Juxtatarot. I got up a pawn early and after forcing him into a double pawn and two isolated pawns we just traded pieces to the end game.

He easily could have forced me to play clean another ten moves to get promotion. But classy on his part.

Shadrap-Timschochet =draw. Full disclosure here. In the start or middle of the endgame I had to go to home depot for a few hours. Left my phone in my garage. I have a TV & bar area in my garage. My brother who is a LOT better than me at chess came for a visit & saw the game on my phone and made 3 or 4 moves while I was gone. He thought it funny as hell. Anyway Tim was up by 1 pawn or maybe even at the time and I offered a draw. Tim wanted to play on & I think because of the good moves my brother made I may have had a slight advantage and I offered another draw. Anyway I think tim should have the win.
Sorry about that, sincerely.

:clyde:

If my little brother did this I'd totally wedgie him.

Actually I don't need a true reason, but you get the sentiment...

Wow. I was extremely impressed by how well you played that endgame. When you offered me a draw the 2nd time, you had a clear advantage and I considered myself lucky to take it.

I don’t want to take advantage but you’re not allowed to do what you did (or what your brother did.) And yet before those 3-4 moves it might have led to a draw anyhow. Im not sure. So I don’t know what to do here. Perhaps we should just play a new game? If so can you play quickly so that we don’t slow down the tourney?

I would rather forfeit. I'm a 1200 player at best & no way I touch you in a rapid game. I have a fantasy draft tomorrow which I am commish and am still figuring the settings on the site because 1 team may have to go auto-draft. Also my 35 year local league auction the following day plus a few work related things on for tomorrow. Take the win. You deserve it. We will meet again!! I don't feel slighted in the least. Cheers!

Very well. Good luck in your draft.

@shadrap I just sent you a rematch challenge. I will be white and play quickly. I would rather do this than simply have you forfeit, since you played very well before your brother stepped in. Up to you.

Thanks!! Some good players here, & I enjoy having my limited mind work overtime. Who does have the highest ranking here? I know Vermeil, you, and another are around 1500. From the results Zow is really good & from 1st hand knowledge he has a salty golf game.

Zow is really good. I think he's in the 1700's.

Tri-man and Pav drew. Id like to say it was a battle for the ages but the sad truth is we both made a few blinders that made this game way more exciting than it had any business being. Which makes for some fun chess imo! We're never going to light up the leaderboard but I had a blast with it, and I think @tri-man 47 did too.

Not me. I’m mid 1200 on a good day but have been playing a lot of analog chess with my kids the last two years. My game has improved quite a bit but I’m still pretty dumb.

If I remember* that day correctly, my short game was crap which prevented any sort of good scoring. Kind of like my end game play. So I just try to be in good shape for when I get to each stage.

*You being a good host and providing lots of whisky would be the cause for my spotty memory.

I did enjoy that one! But man, what a roller coaster. Early on, we happened to develop a long wall of pawns. Pav's king was safely behind the wall ...but his queen and at least one or two other pieces were stuck behind it as well. I had an advantage on the more open side of that wall, so I moved my queen forward to attack. But - I blundered my queen as he took it with a bishop. :wall: That said, I was able to regroup, and we had an extended battle of attrition. I finally got the edge again and freed up a couple of pawns. I knew I had him as I advanced a pawn and promoted it to a queen. However, that blocked his king and forced a draw. :wall: I could have promoted the pawn to, say, a rook and put Pav into a CM ...but I didn't. Stupid queens.

I'm going with "Battle for the Ages".
