Rizzo's track record and team friendly contract makes him one of the highest trade value guys in the game. Schwarber and maybe eventually Bryant are destined for 1B and even the most extreme shift doesn't allow you to play three first basemen. I don't know if Theo dangles Rizzo this off-season but I wouldn't hang up the phone if somebody offers a blockbuster deal.
I dunno. That guy kinda seems like the heart of that team.
But if you can get Andrew Cashner for him, you gotta pull the trigger.

You get what I'm saying. The Giants could probably draw a similar blockbuster for Posey, but some guys are bigger than their value on paper.

Granted, you don't have Schwarber/Bryant waiting to get behind the plate there, either.

the Cubs are in the enviable position of holding young talent that should develop and the financial resources to ramp up payroll whenever they feel like it. Theo doesn't have to do anything major this off-season but if he does, Rizzo would bring a lot more in return than Baez or Castro.

Off-season wish list:

David Price

Dexter Fowler or Denard Span

A Jon Lester pick off move

Bullpen help. Can never have enough bullpen help.

Too much to ask?

Bryant posted a positive defensive rating this year at third, and it's not like he's due for an age-related decline anytime soon. Rizzo's also on a hilariously team-friendly contract for four years (5/7/7/11) with two similarly-hilarious team options after that (14.5/14.5). When (if) Bryant hits the FA market and Rizzo gets out of his deal, Bryant will be 29.

I think unless someone just makes a completely bat#### offer, you keep them as-is. Schwarber was pretty rough in LF this year, but he barely has any experience there and it sounds like he's motivated to get better.

It'd be great shtick if the Cubs spearheaded the NL DH movement at the next CBA, just to get Schwarber off the field.

Congrats to Jake, Kris. and Joe

Has this ever happened before?

Lamarr Hoyt and his 115 ERA+. He didn't finish among the top ten in AL pitcher WAR but got 5.5 R/G per start to win 24 games in 1983.
No one balanced the line between Afro and Mullet better than Lamarr Hoyt. Dress him in those slow-pitch softball uniforms the Pale Hose had in the early 80s and he's one of the greatest images of this great sport.

Kelly Tripucka might quibble with that assessment.
That's fair. I think of Tripucka as a PDM King, but that wasn't necessarily his dominant look. Plus, it wouldn't be a prominent under a baseball cap. I feel like I've spent a lot of time on this.

The Jason Heyward think pieces are all over the place. Am I crazy or is he just not the right fit for this team? I mean, he'd be a fine player, for sure, but I feel like he'd kind of have to be wedged in. I've said this before, but I think the Cubs are much better served going after Denard Span and using the savings to bolster the bullpen. I like the Rex Brothers signing. He's only 27, so I think he can bounce back and regain some of his former glory.

I'm just not a fan of Heyward, but that's probably because I'm basing too much of my opinion on his offensive liabilities. I'm sure I'd gain a much greater appreciation of his overall skill-set watching him on a daily/nightly basis if he became a Cub.

Nice signing. Short term deal and Lackey is a solid pitcher.

Not sure why Cubs want Heyward at that Price. As someone said, sign a player like Span, sign a couple relievers including Darren O'Day. And get Arrieta locked up.

Lots of buzz about the Cubs in serious talks to trade for a top closer (Chapman?). But it was reported so many places at once that I wonder if the Cubs put the word out there to get some final offers from the teams they're courting for SPs.

Cubs have received RHP Adam Warren and a player to be named later for Starlin Castro.
Is Zorbrist the primary 2B next season or does he play all over? How does Baez factor into the mix (or does he)? Cubs clearly trying to win a WS next season with these veteran signings to complement their young group. Going to be a very exciting season as the Cubs.

Warren has nice numbers.

Does the rotation look like this?

Arrieta

Lester

Lackey

Warren

Hammel

T.Cahill is also in the mix, but hard to see him winning a starting job

Is Hendricks a spot starter/bullpen guy? Hammel to the pen?

I think they'll put Warren in the rotation and use Hammel as the spot starter/bullpen guy. They finally have some depth in the rotation. If they'd had it last year they could have stopped going to Hammel. He was awful in the second half.

I hate losing Castro, but it's pretty amazing they were able to flip him for such a high upside pitcher in Warren on just a hot second half. Starlin had been pretty bad for two and a half years.
