Devil's advocate glass half empty guy says:

There's a glaring hole in the center of the outfield at this point. Heyward is a pretty big assumption, and I don't think he even wants to play center. I'm sure the front office knows this... A monster contract could change his mind, and I'm sure they'd only keep him there until Almora is ready. I don't see them signing Heyward now though. I'd prefer Denard Span on a much cheaper/shorter deal to bridge the gap to Almora.

I understand the strategy of adding veterans to the group, but Lackey and Zobrist are old, and both of them have had recent injuries. Neither are on a long term deal, but counting on them to stay healthy is dubious.

I agree 100%. I think some fans are just rooting for at least one "big" move, so they want Heyward even though he doesn't fit. I'm a big fan of Span. He'd be a perfect fit for what the Cubs need right now. Speedy, high OBP leadoff hitter and solid, proven center fielder. Yes, there's some injury risk, but like you said, Almora is waiting and for the money they'd be giving Span, a couple years of good production is all they need.

They are going to add a veteran CF to the mix still (whether it's resigning Fowler, or some other option (Span's name has come up, but not sure how real that is).

The risk is obviously what you mentioned - the guys they have signed are old, and there's reason to believe their performance will continue to be good next season, but that fall-off could come at any time. The Cubs are being built to win a WS though for next season, and they have been pretty smart on these deals (particularly Lackey's 2 year deal).

Cubs have received RHP Adam Warren and a player to be named later for Starlin Castro.
Is Zorbrist the primary 2B next season or does he play all over? How does Baez factor into the mix (or does he)? Cubs clearly trying to win a WS next season with these veteran signings to complement their young group. Going to be a very exciting season as the Cubs.

Warren has nice numbers.

Does the rotation look like this?

Arrieta

Lester

Lackey

Warren

Hammel

T.Cahill is also in the mix, but hard to see him winning a starting job

Is Hendricks a spot starter/bullpen guy? Hammel to the pen?
I think they go:

Arrieta

Lester

Lackey

Hendricks

Hammel

With Hendricks and Hammel being used for short starts and Maddon able to use guys like Cahill, Warren, Wood, Richard and Wada in long relief. I also think he'd like to take some innings off Lester and Arrieta's arms this season. This is the perfect setup for him to do so. Hendricks is very effective a couple times through a lineup. I can see Hammel losing the 5th spot to Cahill or Warren in spring, but I still think he's the favorite right now.

Am I crazy to not want Heyward?
I think it depends on why you don't want him
If it means 10 years, $200M, Soler traded, and still having a giant hole in center field I don't see the appeal other than keeping him from St. Louis.

And his offensive contribution really does leave a lot to be desired for that kind of coin. Everyone talks about how young he is, but does that really matter if you end up giving him a 10 year contract? If they're going to end up with a defensive player whose contract ends when he's 36 I'd rather it be Alex Gordon and having it coming off the books in 4-5 years instead of 10.

Wow unbelievable. Really disagree with giving a career .260 hitter that's averaging 16 HR/yr $200+ mil to play good right field. (Assuming rumored figures are accurate and assuming they deal Soler)

Agree with making moves to get rid of the low OBP guys and/or K a lot off the roster.but really wonder about paying this guy that amount of coin. What exactly is Dexter Fowler looking for? I don't even think I've read anything recently that the Cubs are looking to bring him back.

Excited as ever to see them for spring training. Hope the move is worth it. Glad they're spending. That just seems like an ungodly amount of coin for him.

Sounds a bit better if they front loaded. Which sounds like they have given he reportedly took Cubs offer over 2 $200+ mil offers. Reported the contract has 2 opt outs. First after 3 years.

Holy crap the Cubs have built a destroyer! If their pitching dominates they are going to be riding a tremendous wave. I would be shocked if they did not end the drought within the next two years. Enjoy Cub fans. Your day is coming very soon. Loads to like with these moves.

I still think Heyward in center is a bad idea, so I suspect they're moving Soler. One of the main offseason objectives was to improve outfield defense, so they have to be working on acquiring a true center fielder. It would vindicate the Heyward deal, imo.

I liked the idea they talked about on 670 today - if the cubs do a deal with atlanta (sending soler and whomever else) for pitching, get inciarte as part of the return. He could play center and put heyward in right. You'd lose a little pop in the lineup* downgrading from soler to inciarte, but the defensive upgrade would be huge.

*assuming it's over 70 degrees

Yeah that idea occurred to me too. Re: service time I think they both have five years, so in terms of a rebuild, it's really a lateral move for ATL.

But position-wise, ATL needs a CF too. They can play Olivera in one corner and Markakis in the other, and those guys are just as incapable of playing CF as Soler or Schwarber.

Only difference is ATL is in full blown rebuild

True, and they're pretty clearly dead money for at least the next two years. But either Inciarte or Soler would be under control through when the new park opens.

It would also open up CF for Mallex Smith, eventually. They don't have anyone of his caliber coming up for RF, which is currently manned by The Ghost of Nick Markakis. So I guess a deal like that could work? Guess it depends on what they think of Soler.
