***Chicago Cubs Thread*** (5 Viewers)

:broom:

The position player depth is uncanny.  If they had to have injuries, and all teams do, they've had them in the right place.  The starting pitching has been amazing, but they can't afford an injury there or in the bullpen.  I'm sure the front office is already working deals for the back end.

Looks like Contreras will be getting 3-5

Gramps keeps catching Lester

Montero w/ Arietta

Contreras starts for rest of the rotation

I was just under the scoreboard in the party area when Bryant hit the bomb off the scoreboard on Thurs.  Great view of the scrum for it...after 20 seconds, a 100-pound girl comes out of the pile with nose gushing blood, and the ball in her hand raised high...everyone went nuts, and I doubt she had to buy another drink anywhere in town that night.
To be honest, I don't know of a 100 pound girl that ever has to buy a drink anywhere or at anytime, regardless of having a baseball or not.

What's up with Jake's command?  Umpire last night was squeezing pretty hard, but he's been all over the place for several starts in a row.  Nice to see some line drives finally falling in for Heyward.  Contreras rakes.  I've seen enough of Montero.  Bryant

They have so many pieces.  The trade rumor mill should be pretty heated up for the next month.

Jake looked off and got worse as the game went on. His follow-through looked overly deliberate, like he knew something was wrong and was trying to just make one good pitch to get his motion back. Wasn't working. I hope it's something he can fix. I've upgraded my worry level to "slight."

He's been like this for a while.  Multiple starts with 3+ walks.  Multiple starts only going 5 innings.  A lot more taking against him.  Hitters have adjusted.  He needs to adjust back.

I'm with you. I've finally hit that point where I'm all for making a run at a top-tier reliever. No, I would not give Schwarber for Andrew Miller, but something big along those lines would be fine with me. I hate having to do it, but do it.

:lmao: at the love affair with Schwarber.

The guys has < 300 big league plate appearances. Has it been a good start, of course it has, but it's not like his .831 OPS over that time is other-worldly. Really, no one has any idea what he is outside of being a guy on an NL roster without a true position to play. (pssst - you're fooling yourself if you think he's a MLB LF)

You know exactly what Andrew Miller is and you are in 'Win it now' mode. With the farm system the Cubs have in place, losing Schwarber isn't really a mortgage the future type move. Especially when in you're in position to contend for the next few years and adding 2.5 years of a stud LH reliever that's not only immune to LHPvRHB splits, he's actually better v RHB.

We will give you Schwarber for Sale, right now

That was a mostly crappy weekend.

I understand the point that it's just a brief stretch in a long season, but what's bothering me is that the Cubs are capable of losing like this. These weren't just run-of-the-mill losses. They looked bad in almost every phase of the game.

The injuries and not coincidentally lack of experience are showing up.  This bullpen is pretty bad when the starters don't go deep.  The starting pitching and offense had been masking their flaws.  I wondered how they'd respond once they got into some close games.  Poorly, so far.  All teams go through bad stretches, but this one has been particularly awful.

On a positive note Edwards has looked really good.  Contreras is legit.  The depth really is a beautiful thing.  We know they'll bolster the bullpen here shortly.

I'm ready to see what moves they make. And I hope at least one move is something big. Eloy Jimenez certainly raised his stock a bit yesterday, and we won't be needing a right fielder for the next 8 years.

The way Heyward is hitting you're probably right on that.

I know Miller is the big prize, but I'm wondering if they could work something out with the A's to get Gray and Doolittle.  Especially if the Yankees want Schwarber.  The Cubs could certainly use another starter.  Everyone looks gassed and we're only halfway through the season.  Hammel is done after this year.  Lackey has one more on his deal.  If they're giving up big prospects I think they need a starter too.

Word is Theo believes Jimenez will be a multiple year All Star.

They are unlikely to move him

have to give to get

Yeah, I'm torn. Theo has done great things building this team, but I do worry about him being too risk-averse with dealing prospects—too preoccupied with getting the better end of a deal than with filling an immediate need. But I'm probably just an anxious fan who can't understand the vagaries of the chess game going on between front offices.
