CHIEFS TAG ALLEN

The Kansas City Chiefs have placed the franchise tag on defensive end Jared Allen, according to Adam Schefter of NFL Network.

Allen, a four-year veteran, was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent. Last year, the Chiefs limited Allen's movement as a restricted free agent with the highest possible tender, which would have required any team signing Allen to come up with a first-round pick and a third-round pick as compensation.

It's unclear whether the Chiefs used the exclusive or non-exclusive version of the tag on Allen. Under the exclusive version, the tender will be higher, but he will not be allowed to negotiate with other teams.

Allen is generally regarded as one of the best defensive linemen in the game. But a history of drinking and driving likely will give other potential suitors pause.

Hopefully Jared Allen is as upset about this as he claims to be.
I've only read that Allen has said that if the Chiefs tag him for a season he'll never sign a long-term deal with him. From the quotes I've read it didn't sound to me like he was upset about it(but I may have missed a recent quote). He's said on multiple occasions that he realizes it's a business. KC has the right to tag him and Allen has the right to go somewhere else if they do. Can't stand the drunk-driving players as a rule but he's one of my favorite NFL players to watch.IMO this is a bad move by KC. Allen is absolutely the type of guy you lock up to a long-term deal, much more so than giving LJ the $.

Tagging him just gives them more time to get the deal done. IIRC there is a date certain (I think 7/15) now for them to get the long term deal ...Yeah, here it is: Under provisions of the current collective bargaining agreement, however, teams have until July 15 to strike a long-term deal with a franchise player. After that, he can play under only a one-year contract that cannot be extended until after the last game of the regular season.

Yeah, I know. I'm just saying that if there was ever a young dominating player not yet in his prime that you lock up to a long-term deal if that's what he wants... it's Allen. I would think with the salary cap going up and all these teams having a bunch of cap $'s to spend are just going to drive up his price for DE's even more. Given how their season ended there weren't too many distractions from getting an extension worked out before the '07 season ended and having the deal done as soon as the season ended.

I gave Peterson credit when he played hard ball with LJ but imo Allen>>LJ.

On the radio here in KC last week Allen clarified his stance. He said "If I play one down under the Franchise Tag, I will not sign a long-term deal here." So basically he is saying that KC has until Week 1m and after that, he is basically out of here when the time comes.

Carl Peterson just cannot do anything right......

If they sign a long term deal after 7/15, KC loses the use of the franchise tag for the life of the contract ... that aint happening with Carl. Its 7/15 for the long term deal or a one year franchise tender ....

Five months is a long time to negotiate... it just seems to me they've been talking about the Allen contract situation for the last year or more and still haven't come to an agreemant...http://news.footballguys.com/redesign/pp_b...;playertype=IDP

Chiefs :: DL

DE J. Allen Wants Trade

Elizabeth Merrill, Randy Covitz, Adam Teicher, Kansas City Star - [Full Article]

DE Jared Allen said that he formally requested a trade when a meeting between his agent and the Chiefs' front office produced no contract proposal. The Chiefs denied Allen's request, and GM Carl Peterson said they plan to tender Allen on March 1. Allen's agent, Ken Harris, said the sides were still "far apart" from a long-term deal. Harris said the club plans to high tender Allen, so if another team signed him to an offer sheet, the Chiefs could match it or receive a first- and third-round draft pick. "It's just not an environment that I want to be in right now," Allen said.

I wasn't sold on the Bowe pick but that turned out really well.
I was really high on Dwayne Bowe myself. I thought the Chiefs got a steal myself. When the rookie drafts came around I had him not far behind Calvin Johnson. On a better passing team I think Bowe could give Calvin a run for his money as the Best WR from this draft class. Of course that's just my opinion.

I agree that no deal gets done after the franchise tag is placed. But I wouldn't be shocked if a deal gets done before July 15th. A lot of players talk tough before the tag is put on them, it's part of negotiations, but time and again we've seen players back down.If Allen is serious about not signing a long term deal, then he should sign the tender immediately. But from a business standpoint, a long term deal would mean at least $25 mill in guarantees (I think Freeney got $30 mill), and Allen would have to be pretty strong in his convictions to walk away from that kind of money.Of course, if the Chiefs don't offer a frontline contract offer, it's easier to play for one year of big money, risk injury, then try again next year. It's a tough spot for the Chiefs, I know Allen is great, but I can't blame them for being cautious in offering a guy with alcohol problems a huge contract.

3 DUIs in 4 years......already faced one suspension after promises to change just last year.....a commissioner who dispenses punishment for perceived bad behaviour quite erratically.....still want to show Allen a long term deal?

Yes I do.The Chiefs were 4-12 with very little top-end talent. It is the risk you take. The man is a fan favorite, says he has not had a drink in months, and is willing to keep playing for your team. You just need to pay him is all he asks.Whom would you have KC roll out there @ DE opposite Hali??? Jimmy Wilkerson?? Turk McBride???Allen may be the best DE in the league and KC is going to lose him because of a pompous GM who should have been fired years ago.

very good points KA. Don't forget that Indy did this same exact thing with Freeney last year, before he rec'd his payday. They franchised him, and gave him a long term deal before the season started. I don't know if I am just being hopeful at this juncture, but that's what I am going with. The Chefs need Allen for as long as possible, IMO. He is the best thing to happen to the Chefs (defensively) since the late DT!!

I never liked Peterson because of the way he handled a similar Gonzo contract situation a few years ago(the franchise tag threat there was an even bigger slap in the face because he was 2x as good as any other player in the position at the time). It was even more ridiculous with Gonzo than it is with Allen because Gonzo was actually one of the better players off the field and in the community. All this time I thought KC fans were in Petersons corner... what changed your mind about him? What moves in particular?
