The Saintscut Wynn and add Betts who they had cut earlier. I assume they would not have let go of Wynn if they weren't planning on having Ivory back soon, but I can't find anything on him. Anyone have an update on Ivory?

RB Chris Ivory was sidelined Monday as he continues to recover from a medial collateral ligament injury to his left knee and it's not known when he'll return.

It's supposed to be another two weeks before he can even practice. I don't think he practiced today.I'm surprised if the Saints are going in with 2 HB's until Ivory gets back.

Heath Evans will probably be the third back with David Thomas moving to FB if that's the case. Ivory was supposed to be out 3 weeks but now they're saying 2 more which would make 4 weeks total.

With Reggie Bush out for weeks with a broken right fibula, free agent rookie Chris Ivory is more in the New Orleans Saints mix than ever. Or would be, in theory, if he wasn't recovering from a knee injury he suffered against Tennessee in the team's final preseason game.

"He was limited and he has been limited; if we're looking at his progress, so we're expecting him based on the way he moved around today," Payton said. "He looked pretty good."

After practice Ivory said he is trying to prepare himself mentally, and make sure he has his assignments down pat. But he has not been given any indication as to his status for Sunday's game, he said.

Thoughts om Betts???

We've seen so little of him in a Saints uniform.

But:

- no. 2 back in Saints' offense for 6 weeks?

+ who knows what Ivory does when he gets back.

Maybe Betts makes some noise in the next couple games.

No, Betts at best is keeping the seat warm for Ivory. Ivory may even play this game depending on his progress in practice. Remember Betts was cut if favor of the the team keeping Ivory and Wynn at the end of preseason however I believe they only kept Wynn over him because of his special teams play. If you are looking for a one game fill in (Deeper Leagues) there is a chance Betts gets some carries to spell PT in this game. After this week I would look to Ivory.I said in a preseason thread that I feel Ivory will be the next Deuce McCallister for the Saints in coming years.Just for comparison sake:Deuce McAllister 6'1 232 lbsChris Ivory 6'0 225 lbs (Ivory is still a bit of a raw talent) Deuce was a #1 draft pick. Sean Payton has a history of finding gems with these undrafted free agents though. Ivory's opportunity has now arrived much sooner than expected because of the injury to Reggie Bush and PT being a bit prone to injury himself (Last season) Ivory is a big dude that runs very hard dragging would be tacklers down field with him. Much in the same way I used to enjoy watching Deuce McAllister, I love watching this kids drive and toughness.

I have a bit of a dilema here with Chris Ivory. I wanted to hang on to him but thought I could use an IR move to do so. Now it looks like he may be active. Either way, I don't know what to make of his value. Let's break down the pluses and minuses....

+ tore it up in preseason

+ could split snaps with Pierre in one of the NFL's best offenses

+ coach definitely seems to prefer him over Betts/Wynn

- coming off MCL so not sure if he'll look as fast and powerful as he did in preseason

- will cost me a roster spot and may take a couple of more weeks to break into the RBBC

- by the time he possibly makes an impact, Reggie Bush may be getting back from injury

Idk...

I fully expect Ivory to be used later in the season when the Saints have to travel to the frigid north (Ravens game,Dec 19th etc.) to play some pretty stout defenses. Ivory is that kind of back that would pound it out in less than desirable conditions. I personally think his window of opportunity will continue even after Bush returns. How many carries would remain to be seen and would probably vary based on the opponent/weather.Who exactly would you be giving up in the roster spot that Ivory would take?

Things are looking up and sure enough the Saints do indeed have their RB3...{Though have to think about whether Ivory is healthy enough to contribute and whether he really leaps to RB2 given his time put in in the offseason vs. Betts who is a very late arrival. Betts also has supposed better experience in pass protection but then where is he on the playbook, call-outs, etc.}.

From the morning Picayune:

"We're expecting him, based on the way he moved around today." - Coach Payton, as quoted by the TP.

It also says Ivory is "excited by the prospect of playing."

No link yet.

It is also notable that PT was looking for SJax kind of money. Well if he is going to see a payday any where close to that he has to prove he can be a work horse back. Here is his chance to show his worth.

As a PT owner, I hope he pulls through and runs for 1 million yards.

this is not true.
Smith [PT's agent] declined to specify what Thomas expects to be paid, but he said the figure is not in the realm of the more than $8 million per year that St. Louis star running back Steven Jackson could earn over the life of his six-year contract he signed in 2008.

Smith would not specify what the Saints had offered Thomas so far, but when asked if it was as much as the three-year, $11 million deal the Philadelphia Eagles recently reached in March with fullback Leonard Weaver, Smith said, "No."
So less than $8 million but more than $3+million a year. Splitting the difference puts the PT asking around $5-$6 million a year. This is not an unreasonable sum of money really, imo.

Not true? Len Pasquarelli of ESPN.com has reported it so the reports had to be true.(Sarcasm) Regardless of the amount of the contract PT is looking for it is times like these that define his real value to the team, he wants paid. And now is the time to shine for him.http://www.neworleans.com/sports/saints/sa...ews/408606.html

Saints RB Chris Ivory (knee) fully practiced Thursday. It's looking as if Ivory will play Sunday against Atlanta after missing the first two games with a sprained MCL. He should be the No. 2 RB behind Pierre Thomas with Reggie Bush (leg) out.

assuming he's back, where would Ivory rank among RB's in that offense?
Ivory was the 3rd string RB before getting hurt and before Bush got hurt. Doing the math that would put him #2 behind PT if he is healthy enough for the totes. How the heck Sean Payton would distribute carries? I have no idea what so ever. But I have a feeling in short yardage and goal line situations he may get at least one call. Because of his strength in moving bodies out of the way and power up the middle. Assuming he is healthy of coarse. As far as where he would rank among all RB's there is no way to tell until the situation presents itself in a real game. Right now consider him a deep sleeper with lots of upside potential.

I seen this kid play in the pre-season and wow he looked great. If he does play this week I have a feeling he will get 10 carries and might get a goalline shot. maybe 40-50 yards and maybe a score. alot of ifs but I believe he will work his way into the rotation for sure.

I think the seat is officially Ivorys now. Betts will see less and less time and Ivory is looking stronger. Bush and Ivory will be the combo and then after the bye PT comes into the mix.

Ivory looks good today, but it's still a dead giveaway that they're running the ball when he's in there. Julius Jones and Betts are getting significant time on passing downs. I like Ivory but because he apparently still can't be counted on in pass pro he'll probably take a backseat when Bush and PT are back in.

Well it looks like he is hurt now. Limped off after the long gain.
Thats been the biggest knock on him, because of his wreckless style he's had trouble staying healthy. Not just recently, but throughout his athletic career

show your work on pierre after the bye. 6 weeks is the carolina game before the bye.

i was just wondering if there was some sort of indication pierre would not be back until after the bye, as he post supposes. they said 4-6 weeks which would mean at the lastest the carolina game prior to the bye.

PT said the injury was diagnosed as 4 to 6 week injury. He is still experiencing swelling and has not practiced with the team. Knowing Sean Payton's caution with injury (See Reggie Bush last season) and as long as Ivory and company are producing (158 yards on 15 carries from Ivory today)it would not be outside the realm of possibility that they sit him until after the bye. This is opinion not something that I can document. But a pretty good opinion IMO. How much PT plays when he is active will depend on how much Chris Ivory can accomplish in the meantime. With every 158 yard game he buys himself a bigger piece of the pie. Sean Payton would rather pace his backs so they would be fresh for the post season. Look at how he used Bell last season to keep PT and Bush fresh. I think it is safe to say that as long as Ivory can stay healthy and produce like this he will be in the picture in the running game.

Ivory making some noise this week.. Has the light come on for him, or is it just a fluky week..
More like the light has come on for the offensive line, Ivory has been running hard the holes just weren't there.
Nah man its tampa bays defense...they let a struggling Cedric Benson run roughshod over them to the tune of 144 yards...i picked up ivory as a last minute plug in and would love it to be the real deal...but everyone needs to calm down...Tampa bay is near bottom in run defense, throw in drew brees and the passing game and you have a recipe for 150 yards rushing...lets calm down.

Chris Ivory will take Pierre's job. Not this season, at least not fully, but one more game like that and the Saints let Pt walk next season instead of playing him big bucks.

This is the Saints offense we are talking about. Yes they have been off to a slow start but fact is, for the most part, this is the same offense that has lead the league the last 4 years. You can write the offensive line play as a fluke if you like but if I had Ivory I would make darn sure before I dropped him to waivers. The Saints play the Browns at home next week.
well, you are right ofc. i should have figured he was fos.
Back at you Buddy.

Disagree  I've seen nothing that would tell me he's taking Pierre's job as of yet.And in no way does 2 100+ yard games mean he takes the job either.I could list plenty of RB's who've had 100+ yard games who NEVER have or will be starting RB's...

For sure man, im not going to drop him after 150...im just saying people go nutso after one performance...people claiming hes going to replace PT...relax. This got Demaryus Thomas hype written all over it.

Here's an update for ya:If he'd get 20 touches a game, he'd be a top 3 RB.
thanks for the analysis. u even consider how he'd reach 20 touches considering, hes out on 3rd down/passing plays, the saints are primarily a passing team. And its only one game. and by top 3, youre putting him in the class of Adrian Peterson and Chris Johnson already.

Well I never said he would replace PT that is for certain. I said he could earn a bigger piece of the pie as Payton tries to save PT for the post season. Ivory hasnt showed enough for the replacing PT talk.

actually he had 17 yards in receiving today in addition to the 158 on the ground. He caught balls in the preseason. I think Ivory's weakness is similar to Beanie Wells in that he needs to work on protecting the QB when he is in there. He is a Rookie and as with all rookies he is a bit raw and needs to mature in certain areas.

Ivory has looked good in every game he's played in. He is the real deal. Today he got the monster stats so everybody is talking. I do think if he keeps playing this well he will replace PT next season. I hate to say that because I love PT. But he is a free agent and supposedly wants more money than the Saints are willing to give him.
