Chris Johnson's Involuntary Head Shaking in Interviews (1 Viewer)

bocksheesh

I noticed this in a postgame interview he did with the MNF crew. CJ seemed to involuntarily shake his head rapidly for a brief moment several different times before he spoke. I also seem to recall seeing him do that during the game in between plays, but I may be imagining that.

I'm assuming it's a condition he's had most of his life and not a result of getting hit on the field, but who knows.

Curious if any Tennessee folks know anything about this.

remember Mhamoud Abdul-Rauf in the NBA, he had far worse ticks compared to CJ, but was succesful, especially on free throws (90% in over 600 games)

I think it's the three brain cells he has in his head bouncing around playing laser tag against each other.

He doesn't have Tourettes Syndrome. He had a crushed vertebrae from a sky diving accident between his Freshman and Sophomore years in college. He's had some nerve damage ever since.

As others have said, stems from a previous injury.

I think I heard they have to basically clue refs in to it so they don't call him for false starts if he twitches back there before the snap.

He is so used to juking people out of their jocks he does it on the sidelines, too.
Not baggin on the guy, but he comes off as nervous and jittery when he speaks and the way he runs. Just a ball of energy...Who's trying to hit me and where's the hole.

I like how he laughs at the bottom of piles after getting tackled. He was mic'd on NFL Networks Sound FX

When I was watching the game I kept thinking that he got his bell rung and was trying to shake it off.

Chris Johnson does not have Tourettes. He had neck surgery years ago -- high school I think -- and it's somehow a result of that procedure.
I'm pretty sure it was confirmed that he does, though a mild case. However, the neck surgery is also a factor. Will confirm.

However, if you notice in other videos that are more removed from the field, he doesn't do it as much. For example, there's a pro-bowl diary with him and vince young (featuring jacoby jones dancing) and he isn't twitching. neither does he in the donk-riding video from this summer.

both videos are awesome. links:

http://www.twitvid.com/YXKL3 - so sweet.

Also, note in the pro-bowl video how stoned VY and CJ both seem.

He was on E60 a month or so ago and said it's a nervous habit. He also said that he's been tested for tourettes and that be doesn't have it.

i had that exact same thing in my middle school years. i got lots of strange looks from my classmates and it was especially highlighted when wearing my football helmet or goalie mask. i don't know if its touretts, if it is it's a very mild case of it. the best i can explain it is you get the urge to "pop" you neck. much like cracking your knuckles, but different than cracking your neck by twisting your neck via hand to chin. since you can't "pop" your neck in that way, the urge is unsatisfiable. i eventually stopped, i liked a girl and there i had my motivation. it was tougher than quitting smoking. anytime i am reminded of it, even right now as i type this, the urge comes back for a few minutes.

Thanks board police. Just stay out of the thread.
You're arrested, up against the wall !! It's a sad thing talking about another person's conditon, whether it be a nervous habit, or some other medical issue. I guess anything to make others feel better about themselves. Some things probably don't need discussing.
Well if you'd read the original post instead of coming in here trying to moderate you'd notice it was an innocent inquiry. Never assume things. You just make yourself look like a dummy. Seems to be a big problem on these boards.
