Cinci WRs Going Forward . . . (1 Viewer)

Interested in seeing some FBG opinions on which "diamond in the rough" (if any) will actually emerge to become a productive fantasy option during their time in Cincinnati. It's entirely possible Chad will be elsewhere next year and TJ is a UFA I believe. Depending on how the front office addresses these issues, there could be one, possibly two, starting WR positions open for competition next fall. Who do you see as the likely beneficiary:

Henry

Holt

Chatman

Caldwell

Simpson

With Palmer back (I'm assuming he will be, though nothing is certain with QB arm injuries), there should be some decent value here. And in the most opportunistic of all worlds, savvy owners could end up with a relatively inexpensive WR1 on their roster if they were to choose the right door and Cinn management chose not to match an offer on TJ.

Given limited roster space, which one do you roll the dice on?

Simpson, you don't draft a guy from a small school in the 2nd round unless you see something special, of course it is Cincy though

I think Henry and Simpson have the most upside, I'd rather own Simpson because he's not a ##### bag.

Andre Caldwell reminds me too much of Darrell Jackson, not in a good way either.

Chatman's a journeyman stopgap.

I don't know much about Holt, I'll defer to someone else...

WhoDey partisan here with my random thoughts on this bunch.

Henry - noticed he looked up to heaven after one of his catches (which was a good one over the middle, btw, and the biggest thing that Housh brings to the table each week). Better that than him calling his parole officer. I hated them bringing him back. His talent level is definitely the best of these but I worry about that 10-cent head on his shoulders. High reward-higher risk.

Holt - The thing about Glenn Holt that I like is that he's got a persistence that's kept him on this team in the face of receiver-after-receiver getting taken on to take his place. The fact that he started, while to a degree a commentary on the rawness of the rooks, also is a testament to his hard work IMO. Having said all that, the guy is basically a kick returned and I don't see the huge upside to him long term.

Chatman - I was irritated when idiot-guy twisted Antonio's neck and ended his season. I think he's shown more this year than he had previously here and elsewhere as also caught a lot of Housh-type balls over the middle and in traffic. Still, I don't see him as more than a low-grade possession receiver in the long term.

Caldwell :reche:  - Still a bit early and the jury is out on him of course. Clearly must be more ready than Simpson as he's been ahead of him on the pecking order the whole time. In the short-term he's more likely a better choice than Simpson

Simpson - He hasn't done anything at all which is disturbing to say the least. They knew he was project though and if his natural talent can catch up with the pro game he's probably got the most true upside long term. It'd be nice to see him do something before the end of his first year though.

One hopeful thing to point out, particularly in the cases of Simpson and Caldwell and to a lesser degree Holt is that Housmandzadeh did zilch in the first 3 years of his career before everything clicked. (In his first 3 years combined, Housh had 6 starts, 62 catches, 720 yards receiving and just 1 touchdown).

Something tells me that another 3rd round receiver might be on the way this coming year.

So there you go.

I'm assuming the opposite. I would go all-in that the Bengals have botched this situation horribly if Palmer is still suffering pain. He should have had the TJ surgery in September to give realistic hope that he can play in 2009. I read an article where Palmer begged the team to give him until December 1 to heal on his own while still allowing time to heal by the start of 2009. That schedule stupifies me. Everything I've read says the recovery for that operation is a full year.
