Civilization VII - February 11th, 2025 (1 Viewer)

The amount of unhappiness generated is astronomical, so you better have happiness is large supply.
even if you are attacked? I would assume that the aggressor would get a larger penalty than the defender.
Haven't waited to be attacked. Today I built up happiness, got to turn 100 or so before attacking and still had a couple settlements start ranting at me.
Luckily had enough gold to buy a couple happiness buildings.

Also, unlike in 6 where you could move a troop and a governor into a city after you capture it to calm down unrest, there is no such thing in 7.
You have to wait out 15 turns of anger, which of course decreases your overall happiness.

As I said a whole new game play.. Which is fun.

Have they fixed the UI? How do you like the game after a few months?
Really liking the new gameplay.

They have sent out many updates and patches.
Ai to me is pretty good... almost too much :oldunsure:

I built up an army, loaded them on a couple commanders, got near a city and saw only one swordman in the city so attacked.

Two turns later I was surrounded by knights and Archers and had to run away with my tail between my legs.

OK, time for another check in.

Have you purchased/played Civ VII?
If so, do you like it?
What do you like or dislike about it?

It seems to have broken Potato McWhiskey (but I'm not sure the game is the real issue there). And the CivLifer posted a scathing indictment of the game.

I have not purchased it mainly because the initial Civ game is garbage until they patch it and finish adding the content. Another reason was the massive increase in cost (and their apparent greed in having DLC locked and loaded for more cash soon after launch).

Anyway, I've been playing óld world pretty regularly. I've finally won on the Noble level with all of the leaders. There are still 3 more higher levels. To say this game is challenging is a massive understatement. In the last game I played (as Rome with Agrippina who is difficult to win with. Not because she's a bad leader, but as soon as her insane 10 year old son is of age, he kills her) I lost a city but still managed to eek out an Ambition victory.

On to the Glorious.

I've not purchased it, but have gotten back in to playing a few games of CIV Vi.

Negative reviews have been a big part - seems like its more trouble than its worth right now.

Had seen Potato's mental health issues - hope he is doing ok.

I am enjoying Civ 7., quite a bit. (y)

Very large learning curve compared to previous versions.

Legacy path is a different path to victory, especially when it comes to military/war.

You can still win by domination, but rather than destroy every sin, you can complete different tasks to win as well.

if I wanted to give Civ a try - would it be good to go all the way back to Civ 1?

should I do the PC version or a gaming platform - Playstation, etc.

anything I should know that might be a non-starter - too tedious, really hard to learn, etc

no. I'm not even sure if you can even still play the first one. I'd start with 3. Civ 5 is my fave, 6 is ok but I haven't even tried 7. The PC version is so much better IMHO. I assume you mean Civilization Revolution was ok. I do think Colonization is worth a play. I can't really think of anything that you "need to know". Have patience and have fun.

I messed with the new one briefly on someone's laptop. Was super lost. Watched a few tutorial videos but was still lost and just got crushed a few times.

I may just be dumb or the game has passed me by.

1. No, even if you could find a copy of Civ 1 it's not worth it (other than a look at how far graphics have come).
2. Hands down PC. I've played it on a Playstation and on a tablet, but those versions pale in comparison to the PC experience.
3. It's pretty easy to learn and there's a tutorial if you need it. The Civilopedia is a fairly good reference, but at times you have to really dig for info.

As others said, the first CIV is over 30 years old as is CIV 2 which was my favorite. I am not sure how far back versions still work on PC. 3 is a 20+ year old game too. 5 was fairly universally loved (but is much better with the expansions) and can probably be picked up cheap with all its add-ons. 6 had a lot of new changes to gameplay and was controversial at first, it grew on me a lot but not until they released all the DLC as the base game was broken/features removed. So I wouldn’t get it unless you can grab all the extras for cheap, there are significant discounted sales from time to time.

There are built-in tutorials to pick up the game pretty easy, but if you like it and want to play on higher difficulties there can be a steep learning curve to strategies to maximize your cities and other gameplay concepts.

I haven’t bothered with 7 yet, it has even more significant changes than 6 did. From what little I’ve read it is nearly a complete departure from what has come before.

thanks Buckna! so you think a complete newbie should start at Civ 5 and could manage through it pretty well?

Yeah, definitely a good starting point, cant imagine it would be very expensive either since its been out for 10 or 15 years. Steam probably will have it on sale at some point this summer if they haven't already. I think CDKeys would have it really cheap as well as plenty of other websites

Civ2 is my all-time favorite game on any platform. IV and some of the others have some cool stuff, but I still consider II the definitive turn-based strategy game. Haven't played VII.
IV is my all time favorite Civ game. I will always have Nostalgic feelings towards Civ I.
I Remember sitting around with my wife deciding out next move together.

She played a little of Civ II, but lost interest :kicksrock:

Most of it is still so pricey to me. Civ III is 4.99 on Steam. While Civ 4 is 19.99 and the 2 expansion packs are 4.99 and 9.99. Colonization is 19.99 and Civ 5 is 29.99. Then there's 13 EPs that range from $20-2. I don't remember paying those kind of prices but like Buckna said games are on sale from time to time. I had also got some games from this site.

Its still doable but it’s gotten harder and harder to buy physical copies over the years especially for PC games which is where old games are usually discounted to a real “market value.” Meanwhile, the used digital game market is weird. They keep the prices high for really old games most of the time and then occasionally have them massively discounted to what they are really worth. I guess it works, they get instant gratification folks or people that don’t want to wait for sales to pay up, and get incremental sales during like Steams Summer sale when people are like, “ok, why not for that cheap price?”

IV was peak imo. The mods and dlc each added quite a bit. Was also peak forum engagement.

Each one afterwards just never could get the right difficulty mix.

For me Civ just became too easy to win. The higher levels were only difficult in that the AI got a lead in cities, resources, etc. But the AI was (is?) criminally incapable of presenting a challenge. One key example was air power; for the AI it just didn't exist.

I think this is where the forums were great. You would compete against other people or against the same AI game
