Classic Album Discussion Thread: The Kinks-Lola Versus Powerman and the Moneygoround, Pt. 1 (3 Viewers)

Absolutely was. AOR was a living, breathing radio format as the music was happening (& jerks like Lee Abrams were choking it to death). Classic Rock radio was/is a time capsule.
But an AOR staple IS Journey, and we all know Journey blows big baby chunks

I'm fine with that, but you're the one who tends to get persnickety about boundaries.
Some things should be out of bounds for the thread. I don’t want to discuss what your favorite Cure song is. But most stuff within the classic rock genre is cool.

I knew AOR as a thriving format was pretty much dead by '81 or so (they hadn't embraced anything that didn't sound 60s/70s). But I knew it was a dead format when I heard Billy ####### Joel's "Allentown" in '83 or whenever on DC101. I may have actually cried.

Keith Richards gave songwriting credit for “You Gotta Move” to Mississippi Fred McDowell and Reverend Gary Davis, two oldtime acoustic slide blues guys (though McDowell did some 60s recordings with an electric guitar which are awesome to listen to if you’re a blues fan). But it’s really one of those traditional things- they all sang it and nobody really knows who wrote it. The guitar work on the Stones cover is pure Robert Johnson- very distinctive.

Classic rock is a narrowly restrictive radio format.  A classic rock station might play "Start Me Up" but definitely not "Can't You Hear Me Knocking"

Way less on 2018 CR stations, but back when the format was fresher? All the time.

Journey is also mainline Classic Rock, BTW  :scared:

... chiefly before Escape ... their material with Greg Rollie has always been and still belongs on CR stations (around here).

Saw them live once. Opened for the Paychedelic Furs. I only remember that one song.
Animotion's 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th most played tracks on Spotify are various versions of "Obsession".

A song called "I Engineer" occupies the #3 slot.  I listened to it but it didn't ring a bell.  It's not a lost gem.

Animotion replaced both the girl and boy singers between their two top ten hits.  I guess I should have noticed this watching the video :bag:

The original lineup has reformed and is touring this summer with A Flock of Seagulls, The Romantics and Wang Chung.  Animotion released an album of new material last year.  I'm listening to it now and it's surprisingly halfway decent.  Track #4 "Bad Review" is autobiographical

ETA:  It's maybe quarter decent

This is the first AOR station I listened to as a kid.  Of course I am familiar with all the old stations they mention because I am from Orlando.  It talks about the beginnings of WORJ FM.  How they came up with the concept.  Really pretty interesting how the format came about.  It is pretty long but I found it interesting.  It was called progressive rock back then.

Great call & my favorite Stones album. Most I'm guessing would say Exile but that's actually #3 on my list (Let It Bleed is #2). So, so hard for me to name a favorite song on this album but if I had to name one it would be Sister Morphine. The haunting slide guitar & lyrics are just killer.

Fun note: I was in Nashville last weekend & went to the Rolling Stones Exhibitionism event at the Nashville's Musicians Hall of Fame. Wasn't cheap when considering kids who really aren't that in to it but we'll worth it & glad I went.
