Classic Album Discussion Thread: The Kinks-Lola Versus Powerman and the Moneygoround, Pt. 1 (1 Viewer)

Have to say I’m surprised at the extent of the accolades in here.  Just never got into The Beach Boys.
Ive given this album numerous tries due to how well regarded it is..  I don't get it.  I like "Wouldn't it Be Nice" a little but not much else.

Sloop John B, that's a good song?  Whole lot of meh for me.

Anyone else remember the Wonder Years episode where Kevin and Winnie break up after a field trip?  The final scene was scored to God Only Knows.  One of the most indelible moments of my childhood was hearing that song for the first time while watching that ep.
My favorite use is in Boogie Nights. But I could write that about every song in Boogie Nights.

It's all subjective and that's what makes music special.

I do encourage you though to check out Showtime's recent documentary of the making of Pet Sounds: http://www.sho.com/titles/3444335/the-beach-boys-making-pet-sounds

It might provide a bit more insight about the complex textures and creativity of this album. FWIW, I'm not the biggest fan of "Sloop John B" either, but it fits in the package nicely.

Motley Crue- Shout At the Devil (1983)

In the Beginning

Shout At the Devil

Looks That Kill

*******

God Bless the Children of the Beast

Helter Skelter

Red Hot

Too Young to Fall In Love

Knock ‘Em Dead, Kid

Ten Seconds to Love

Danger

I used to love watching VH1’s Behind the Music. Without a doubt, my favorite episode was the one about Motley Crue. Doesn’t matter that this was a band I rarely listened to- I just wasn’t into hair bands- because their story was such a trainwreck, you couldn’t turn away. In the entire history of popular music, there has never been a group of more hedonistic performers. Ever.

Anyhow, this was their second album, considered their best and their breakthrough. Though the lyrics are rather insipid (unless you’re 15 year old you’re not listening to these guys for the lyrics) there is some real talent in the sound here- particularly Nikki Six and the drumming of Tommy Lee.

Red Hot is one of my all time favorite songs. And Shout at the Devil was the song my wife and I walked out to at our wedding :bag:

Just listened to Too Fast For Love the other month and took a thread out about it, weighing it against Guns's debut.

Too Fast For Love > Shout At The Devil, IMHO.

Agree on this - I like the rawness of TFFL versus the more polished SATD.

That said. SATD holds a lot of great memories in the heavy metal wave that was taking place circa 1983. This, Pyromania, Metal Health, Piece of Mind,  and a few other big time metal albums were dominating the scene that year.

I agree.  TFFL was a great thrash album and SaTD was a great hair metal album.

Oh, no doubt. I like both. Was a, um, gentile comment.

What? I would like to hear more about this.
I meant wedding reception... you know, after the groomsmen and bridesmaids were introduced by the DJ he switched the music to Shout at the Devil and introduced the bride and groom for the first time.  He faded it out into our first dance song after Vince screamed the title...

Pray tell that "Number of the Beast" was the first dance song.

when I was younger, I used to regard the 2nd side of SATD as the greatest side of any cassette I owned.  hard to beat

In the beginning good always overpowered the evils of all man's sins...
But in time the nations grew weak and our cities fell to slums while evil stood strong.
In the dusts of hell lurked the blackest of hates, for he whom they feared awaited them... Now many many lifetimes later.
Lay destroyed, beaten, beaten down, only the corpses of rebels, ashes of dreams and blood stained streets.
It has been written, "Those who have the youth have the future".
So come now, children of the beast, be strong and shout at the Devil!

Spent many a night banging my mulleted head to this.  Agree with the others that TFFL was the better album, but this one was still great.

I think Pet Sounds is a great album. I don't agree that it is better than anything The Beatles put out, but that is just my personal opinion. "Sloop John B" is my favorite song on the album.
:goodposting:  Pet Sounds IMO is the fruit of The Beatles and The Beach Boys challenging each other to stretch themselves artistically.  They did a great job raising each other's games.  God Only Knows is favorite song in the entire Beach Boys catalog.

The Motley Crue episode of Behind The Music is one of the best of the entire series and followers of this thread would enjoy it.  I remember being struck by the band talking about how getting a headlining spot at a particular LA club (can't recall which one, you probably do) made them feel like the band had made it.  They went on to sell out arenas, but in its place and time, headlining at the club was just as big a win.
Whiskey A Go-Go or Gazzari's, maybe?

"Shout At The Devil" is such a lame title. Like something a Simpsons writer would come up with to parody a Christian rock band.

Whiskey A Go-Go sounds right.  Would Roxy’s fit the time and place?
Yeah, Roxy's would, I think. I was just spitballing. I watched Penelope Spheeris's Decline Of Western Civ II. That and visiting LA and Hollywood Blvd in the eighties as a teen is the extent of my knowledge of those clubs. I think I caught an STD just walking there.

Pretty sure it was Roxy’s but I can’t remember.

Though the entire episode was epic, my favorite moment was Nikki Six describing how he was medically dead (even given a “time of death” by a medic”) before reviving.

Yeah, Nikki Sixx was dead once. Vampira (NSFW)

Jesus.  Leave it to rockaction to inject the Misfits into a Motley Crue discussion.  Not sure what your point is, but I am in full support.  Been waiting for Tim to mention Walk Among Us here.  I'm thinking he may not get around to it. Maybe we need to convert the punk/hardcore thread into something similar to this?

My favorite part when they were talking about touring with Ozzy and how he once snorted up a line of ants that were gathering around something that spilled on the floor and then they cut to Ozzy, "so there I was kneeling on the floor snorting up ####### ants".

He was so dead. Free association! Thanks, Herb. :)  Mad love. We need our punk rock thread back. I haven't been scoping the dailies lately. I think I missed Gainesville this yr.

Gave Pet Sounds a listen.  I don’t get it.  God Only Knows is probably a top 50 song ever for me.  Wouldn’t It Be Nice and Sloop John B pretty good. Otherwise, a big meh from me.

This is their 11th album.  What makes this one so special that you have non-Beach Boys fans tripping over themselves trying to convince you how awesome it is?
