Clinton Portis = Champ Bailey AND Dre Bly (1 Viewer)

I just realized this morning that Shanny got both Bailey AND Bly for CP. He traded Portis who wanted BIG money for Champ and a #2 pick. Then used that pick on Tater, whom he later traded for Bly.

WOW... nice work, rat face.

It's more about Snyder being a horrible owner than Shanny being a genius. How many times has Snyder gave the green light to overpay for a veteran free agent on the downward spiral of his career or for a mediocre player (See Brandon Lloyd)? With Portis he received a young good player....but still came out with the short straw in the trade.

Snyder getting his ### handed to him on a platter makes me feel all good inside.

Shanny had to give up George Foster, a former 1st rounder, to get Bly, as well. In the end, it came down to Clinton Portis and a first rounder (George Foster) for Bailey + Bly. There's also the trade of Ashley Lelie for two picks from Washington, as well as the trade of their first rounder for a Washington first rounder that eventually provided the impetus to go up and get Jay Cutler. Denver has almost executed as many of Washington's draft picks as Washington has, recently. With that said, I think Shanahan is tremendously underrated as a GM (well, technically Sundquist is the GM, but Shanny is still underrated as a personnel guy). His draft track record is very spotty (although he's had a lot of trouble with high round picks, few teams in the league have as sterling of a record on late-round picks as Shanahan does), but a GM's job is to acquire talent for the team through any means necessary. Just because Shanny is mediocre in the draft doesn't mean he's a mediocre GM, since probably nobody in the league works undrafted free agents, regular free agents, and trades as masterfully as Shanahan. Year in and year out, Denver is one of the most talented teams in the league, which means that Shanahan must by definition be one of the best GMs in the league.
