Coaching Carousel: Master Thread (1 Viewer)

Jason Wood

Zoo York
The NFL offseason is afoot, with several coaches already given their walking papers with another half dozen or so possibly being shown the door. Over the course of the next few months, there is going to be a ton of news, rumor and innuendo related to the NFL coaching carousel. Not only is it important to track the head coaching moves, but also the assistant coaches [with particular attention to the coordinators].Each season, I pen an article for the site [and also our magazine] that encapsulates the major NFL coaching moves. This pinned thread will serve as the official sounding board this offseason for the moves as they take place, and all the juicy gossip the leads up to the official decisions.I will keep the front page updated as the offseason progresses so people have a one-stop shop to monitor the goings on.

NFL Coaching Carousel

Buffalo Bills

Head Coach -- **** Jauron -- Bills fans everywhere are asking, "was this worth the wait?" as the Bills have chosen **** Jauron as Mike Mularkey's replacement. Jauron, the interim head coach in Detroit this year, was head coach in Chicago and enjoyed one strong season [13-3] sandwiched between four very pedestrian ones.

Offensive Coordinator -- Steve Fairchild -- Former Bills RB coach Steve Fairchild returns to the team as offensive coordinator after serving as Mike Martz' OC in St. Louis the last three seasons.
Defensive Coordinator -- Perry Fewell -- The Bills have chosen Chicago Bears defensive backs coach Perry Fewell as their defensive coordinator. Fewell worked on the same staff as **** Jauron in 1998, and served a stint in St. Louis.Denver Broncos

Offensive Coordinator -- Rick Dennison -- Mike Heimerdinger did indeed reunited with Mike Shanahan as expected, but not as Gary Kubiak's replacement. Offensive line coach Rick Dennison was promoted to Offensive Coordinator in part to keep him from leaving with Kubiak to Houston. Heimerdinger will serve as Assistant Head Coach and assist in the passing game.Detroit Lions

Head Coach -- Rod Marinelli -- After a long search that included more than a dozen rumored candidates, it appears the Lions have decided on Rod Marinelli as Steve Mariucci's replacement. Marinelli has been the Tampa Bay Bucs defensive line coach and assistant head coach and has long been a commodity [as a DC] but will make the leap from position coach to head coach.
Offensive Coordinator -- Mike Martz -- Mike Martz has joined the Lions as offensive coordinator after an on again, off again negotiations. Martz is unquestionably a major coup for the moribund Lions, regardless of whether one viewed him as a good head coach, his offensive planning and play calling is among the league's best.
Defensive Coordinator -- Donnie Henderson -- Donnie Henderson has joined the Lions staff as defensive coordinator after serving the last two seasons as the Jets DC under Herm Edwards. Henderson got his NFL start in Baltimore as a secondary coach.Green Bay Packers

Head Coach -- Mike McCarthy -- Out with one Mike [sherman], in with another. Mike McCarthy, most recently the San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator, will be named the Packers new head coach according to ESPN.
Offensive Coordinator -- Jeff Jagodzinski -- Falcons offensive line coach, Jeff Jagodzinski, has been named the Packer's new offensive coordinator. Interestingly, Jagodzinski landed in Atlanta [as TE coach] after being fired by Mike Sherman in Green Bay.
Defensive Coordinator -- Bob Sanders -- Bob Sanders has been promoted to Defensive Coordinator after serving as the team's defensive line coach. Sanders is expected to run the same defensive scheme that Jim Bates installed last season.Houston Texans

Head Coach -- Gary Kubiak -- In one of the NFL's worst kept secrets, the Houston Texans hired Denver Bronco's offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak as their new head coach following the Broncos AFC Championship game defeat. Kubiak has been Mike Shanahan's OC and righthand man for 11 seasons.
Offensive Coordinator -- Troy Calhoun -- Denver assistant coach Troy Calhoun has followed Gary Kubiak to the Texans and will serve as Houston's offensive coordinator. Calhoun has served as a defensive assistant and special teams coach in Denver, and has OC experience at the college level, most recently at Wake Forest.
Defensive Coordinator -- Richard Smith -- Richard Smith, the Miami Dolphins co-defensive coordinator last season under Nick Saban, has joined the Texans in the same capacity. Smith has 18 years of NFL experience, primarily as a linebackers coach. He coached with Kubiak in Denver for several years.Kansas City Chiefs

Head Coach -- Herman Edwards -- Herman Edwards appears all but certain to replace **** Vermeil as the Chiefs head coach, but not without a fair amount of drama. Currently the Chiefs and Jets are negotiating compensation to allow Edwards out of his NY contract.
Offensive Coordinator -- Mike Solari -- After serving as Kansas City's offensive line coach for nine seasons, Mike Solari has been promoted to offensive coordinator by new HC Herman Edwards. Obviously Edwards values continuity on a team with an explosive offense and devastating running attack.
Defensive Coordinator -- Gunther Cunningham -- Herm Edwards has retained Gunther Cunningham as the Chiefs' defensive coordinator.Miami Dolphins

Offensive Coordinator -- Mike Mularkey -- Nick Saban hired Mike Mularkey to replace Scott Linehan as the Fins offensive coordinator. Mularkey, most recently the head coach in Buffalo, made his mark as an offensive coordinator in Pittsburgh.
Defensive Coordinator -- Dom Capers -- Nick Saban continues to bolster his coaching staff with the hiring of Dom Capers as defensive coordinator. Capers was the Texans head coach for four years and also coached the Carolina Panthers as an expansion team.Minnesota Vikings

Head Coach -- Brad Childress -- Brad Childress has named Vikings head coach after serving as Andy Reid's offensive coordinator in Philadelphia the last few years. Childress, who didn't call plays in Philadelphia, does have play-calling experience from his days at Wisconsin. He's expected to bring a more balanced offensive approach than the ultra-pass oriented tendencies of Reid. Childress replaces Mike Tice who was fired after a tumultuous 9-7 season by new owner Ziggy Wulf.
Offensive Coordinator -- Darrell Bevell -- Packers QB coach Darrell Bevell, has been named the Vikings new offensive coordinator. This move has been widely anticipated as Bevell had a good reputation among the coaching ranks and was a player under Childress at Wisconsin.
Defensive Coordinator -- Mike Tomlin -- Bucs secondary coach Mike Tomlin was named the Vikings defensive coordinator. At 33 years old, Tomlin is one of the youngest coordinators in league history, and will likely implement a version of the Cover-2 scheme made famous in Tampa.New Orleans Saints

Head Coach -- Sean Payton -- Sean Payton, the Cowboys passing game coordinator the last two years, has accepted an offer to be the Saints new head coach. In addition to coaching under Parcells, Payton was the offensive coordinator under Jim Fassel in New York during their run to the Super Bowl. His background is primarily working with QBs, an important role in New Orleans given the expectation that they will draft a QB with the 2nd overall pick.
Offensive Coordinator -- Doug Marrone -- After reports that Chris Palmer would become the Saints OC, it appears Sean Payton has gone in a different direction and has formally hired Doug Marrone as OC/Offensive Line Coach. Marrone has serves as the O-line coach for the Jets the last four seasons. Payton is expected to call the plays himself.
Defensive Coordinator -- Gary Gibbs -- Sean Payton has named Gary Gibbs as the Saints new DC. Payton worked with Gibbs in Dallas for the last three seasons, Gibbs has served as the Cowboys LB coach for four seasons. Gibbs is perhaps best remembered as the Oklahoma Sooners coach AFTER Barry Switzer.New England Patriots

Offensive Coordinator -- Josh McDaniels -- The Patriots went without an offensive coordinator in 2005, but QB coach Josh McDaniels has been elevated to the position of offensive coordinator for 2006, making him the youngest coordinator in the NFL [he's 29].
Defensive Coordinator -- Dean Pees -- The Patriots wasted little time in naming a replacement for Eric Mangini by promoting Dean Pees, last year's linebackers coach, to the coordinator position. Pees has 34 years of coaching experience including a stint as the head coach at Kent State and, prior to that, as the defensive coordinator under Nick Saban at Michigan State.New York Jets

Head Coach -- Eric Mangini -- At 35 years old with just one year as an NFL coordinator, Eric Mangini has accepted the Jets offer to be Herm Edwards replacement as head coach. Mangini, the latest departure from the Belichick/Patriots tree, will be the league's youngest head coach.
Offensive Coordinator -- Brian Schottenheimer -- 32-year old Brian Schottenheimer will take over the OC helm in New York after serving on his father's Chargers staff the last two seasons [as QB coach.]
Defensive Coordinator -- Bob Sutton -- In a mild surprise, Eric Mangini has promoted LB coach Bob Sutton to replace Donnie Henderson as defensive coordinator. It's odd in that Sutton has been with the team now through four coaches [Parcells, Groh, Edwards and now Mangini] and, although accomplished, is considered to have a very quiet demeanor.Oakland Raiders

Head Coach -- Art Shell -- Whoever said you can never go home again isn't following the Oakland Raiders. 12 years after being fired by the franchise, Art Shell has been re-hired as Raiders head coach. Shell has openly lobbied for HC jobs over the years, but never got serious consideration despite a reasonably successful first stint in Oakland. Shell, unlike many other Al Davis candidates, knows exactly what to expect and how to operate under Davis' heavy hand.
Offensive Coordinator -- Tom Walsh -- The Raiders just keep trying to recapture the magic of yesteryear. Tom Walsh, a long-time Raiders assistant coach [from 82 to 94], is re-joining the team as Art Shell's offensive coordinator. Walsh hasn't been a major factor in the coaching arena over the last decade [much like Shell], so it's unclear what kind of style he'll bring to the table.
Defensive Coordinator -- Rob Ryan -- Rob Ryan [son of Buddy, brother of Rex] was retained by Al Davis as the Raiders defensive coordinator despite the head coaching change. Much like when Ryan worked under Norv Turner, he'll likely have the chance to run the defense with some autonomy given the offensive background of Art Shell.Philadelphia Eagles

Offensive Coordinator -- Marty Mornhinweg -- Brad Childress, Andy Reid's long-time offensive coordinator, took the Vikings head coaching job and Mornhinweg was promoted to OC after serving as an assistant the last two seasons.St. Louis Rams

Head Coach -- Scott Linehan -- Scott Linehan has beaten out fellow finalists Ron Rivera [CHI DC] and Cam Cameron [sD OC] for the Rams head coaching vacancy. Linehan served as offensive coordinator in Miami in 2005 and was OC in Minnesota for three years prior.
Offensive Coordinator -- Greg Olson -- Scott Linehan has tabbed Greg Olson as his OC. Olson was the Lions QB coach and has also served in that capacity for Chicago and San Francisco. Olson and Linehan are both part of the John L. Smith coaching tree, serving under Smith together on several occasions.
Defensive Coordinator -- Jim Haslett -- The Rams have added Jim Haslett, most recently the Saints head coach, as their new defensive coordinator under head coach Scott Linehan.San Francisco 49ers

Offensive Coordinator -- Norv Turner -- The 49ers have hired Norv Turner as their new offensive coordinator, replacing Mike McCarthy [who took the HC job in Green Bay]. Turner was the Raiders head coach in 2004-2005, and brings vast experience as an HC and OC on teams including the Cowboys, Redskins, Chargers and Dolphins.Washington Redskins

Offensive Coordinator -- Al Saunders -- The Redskins are giving new meaning to the expression, "money talks and b.s. walks" after pulling a coup and hiring Al Saunders as their offensive coordinator. Saunders masterminded the KC Chiefs offense and was thought to be in line to replace **** Vermeil. But after Herm Edwards was brought in, Saunders was lured to D.C. for a reported $2 million per year salary.NFL Front Office Carousel

Buffalo Bills: Marv Levy IN, Tom Donahoe OUT -- Tom Donahoe has been fired by owner Ralph Wilson, and Marv Levy [80 years young] will return to run football operations.
Cleveland Browns: GM Phil Savage -- After a failed power struggle, it was Browns President John Collins, NOT GM Phil Savage that was fired after several public reports hinted at the outcome going to other direction.
Houston Texans: GM Charlie Casserly -- Despite expectations to the contrary, it appears that Charlie Casserly will remain in Houston as the Texans GM.
Minnesota Vikings: Fran Foley -- San Diego Chargers director of pro scouting Fran Foley has agreed in principle to become the new director of player personnel for the Minnesota Vikings, and a deal is expected to be completed by the end of the week.
Philadelphia Eagles: GM Tom Heckert Jr. -- Several reports, including Jimmy Johnson on FOX, reported that Tom Heckert Jr., the VP of Player Personnel, was among the favorites to land a number of expected GM openings around the league. However, the Eagles proactively addressed the situation by promoting Heckert to the position of General Manager.
New York Jets: GM Mike Tannenbaum [replacing Terry Bradway] -- After a tumultuous offseason that saw Herm Edwards depart for Kansas City, the hiring of the NFL's youngest head coach and then an internal struggle over whether to retain Mike Heimerdinger as OC after he clearly wanted out, the Jets have "re-assigned" GM Terry Bradway and promoted assistant GM Mike Tannenbaum.

Coaching Candidates: News & Rumor Mill

Current or Former Head Coaches

Mike Sherman, Ex-GB HC -- Mike Sherman was highly successful in his stint as Green Bay's head coach [prior to this season] and has deservedly gotten interest from a number of teams including the Saints and Jets. Unfortunately for Sherman, both jobs have been filled at this point.

Herm Edwards, Ex-NY Jets HC -- Herman Edwards signed a 4-year, $12 million contract to replace **** Vermeil as the HC in Kansas City.
Mike Tice, ex-MIN HC -- Tice was thought to be a dark horse candidate for the Jets HC vacancy, but Eric Mangini has accepted that job. Whether Tice sits out a year or lands somewhere as a coordinator remains to be seen.
Jim Haslett, Ex-NO HC -- Haslett is among the candidates for the Detroit Lions head coaching vacancy and is rumored to be among a short list of candidates for the Bills job.
Mike Martz, Ex-STL HC -- Martz was under consideration for the Sains job, which went to Sean Payton. It's unclear whether he's in the running for any of the remaining vacancies.Defensive Coordinators

Jerry Gray, DC, Buffalo -- Jerry Gray interviewed for the Texans and Lions jobs, but it appears he's likely to end up somewhere as a coordinator. Rumors have Gray landing in Green Bay as a replacement for Jim Bates.
Ron Rivera, DC, Chicago -- Ron Rivera was one of three finalists for the St. Louis Rams HC vacancy, but will likely return to Chicago as DC after falling short to Dolphins OC Scott Linehan.
Mike Zimmer, DC, Dallas -- Mike Zimmer was the first candidate interviewed for the St. Louis Rams coaching vacancy, but is not one of the finalists.
Jim Bates, DC, Green Bay -- Was given an interview in Green Bay [as a courtesy?] but the job went to Mike McCarthy and now Bates will likely join another team as their DC in 2006.
Ted Cottrell, DC, Minnesota -- Ted Cottrell was one of four coaches to interview for the Vikings head coaching job, but ultimately lost out to Brad Childress.
Tim Lewis, DC, New York Giants -- Tim Lewis interviewed with the Saints, but it remains to be seen whether he's a viable candidate elsewhere.
Donnie Henderson, DC, New York Jets -- Donnie Henderson was among the candidates for the Saints HC job and was given an interview by the Jets to move up and replace Herm Edwards, but won neither job. New Jets coach Eric Mangini fired Henderson who will presumably have little trouble landing elsewhere as a defensive coordinator.
Wade Phillips, DC, San Diego - Interviewed for the Packers HC vacancy [won by Mike McCarthy]
Gregg Williams, DC, Washington -- Williams appears set to remain in Washington after agreeing to an astounding $8 million, 3-year deal in January.Offensive Coordinators

Jim Fassel, OC, Baltimore -- Fassel met with St. Louis officials regarding the Rams HC vacancy, but is not among the finalists.
Maurice Carthon, OC, Cleveland -- Maurice Carthon interviewed for the Saints HC job [won by Sean Payton] and has been confirmed among a massive list of potential Lions candidates.
Sean Payton, OC, Dallas -- Sean Payton was given consideration in Detroit and Green Bay, but ultimately landed in New Orleans as the Saints new head coach.
Gary Kubiak, OC, Denver -- Kubiak is expected to be named the Texans next head coach in the coming days.
Al Saunders, OC, Kansas City -- Saunders, thought to be the successor to **** Vermeil until Herman Edwards jumped into the mix, interviewed for a number of HC vacancies but ultimately joined the Redskins coaching staff as offensive coordinator for a reported $2 million per year.
Scott Linehan, OC, Miami -- Scott Linehan will replace Mike Martz as the St. Louis Rams head coach, having beaten out fellow finalists Cam Cameron and Ron Rivera.
Brad Childress, OC, Philadelphia -- Brad Childress has been hired as the Minnesota Vikings new head coach.
Cam Cameron, OC, San Diego -- Cam Cameron was among three finalists for the Rams head coaching job, but presumably will return to San Diego as OC now that Scott Linehan has secured the Rams vacancy.
Mike McCarthy, OC, San Francisco -- The dark horse won the race. Despite being one of the last candidates interviewed for the job, it appears McCarthy is the man in Green Bay and will be named the teams new head coach.Other Positional Coaches, NFL

Mike Singletary, Linebackers Coach, San Fran -- Singletary intends to remain with San Francisco after being informed he was no longer in the running for the Lions HC vacancy.
Jim Caldwell, WR Coach, Indianapolis -- Caldwell was one of four candidates for the Vikings HC vacancy, which ultimately went to Brad Childress.
Kippy Brown, WR Coach, Houston -- Brown was interviewed for the Texans HC opening.
Russ Grimm, OL Coach, Pittsburgh -- Unconfirmed reports suggest that Russ Grimm is no longer in the running for the Lions HC job, but no formal declaration has been made to that effect.
Rod Marinelli, DL Coach, Tampa Bay -- Rod Marinelli, the Bucs defensive line coach, has long been a hot commodity for vacant defensive coordinator slots [but the Bucs haven't let him leave]. But thanks to Matt Millen, Marinelli is set to leap from position coach to NFL head coach, replacing Steve Mariucci in Detroit.College Head Coaches

Kirk Ferentz, HC, Iowa U. -- Kirk Ferentz has reportedly removed himself from consideration for NFL HC vacancies and will return to Iowa [likely with a fat new extension in place to "keep" him]

Wood -- no mention of Linehan?
Hey Gator, you mean as a HC candidate? I can add him, I hadn't heard anything that mentioned him, I tried to list people that either a) had been head coaches already, b) had interviewed for HC jobs prior to this season, or c) had been directly mentioned as potential candidates in chatter this season.

Booth Newspapers writer Greg Johnson mentioned S. Linehan as one of several candidates for the vacant Detroit head coaching job.(GR Press on 1/01/06) Also mentioned were B. Bratkowski(OC Cincy),S. Payton AHC,Dallas),C.Cameron (OC SD), M. Singletary LB C,SF),J. Schwartz (DC,Tenn).

Booth newspaper's Lion's beat writer Tom Kowalski said on 1/02/06 That Ron Rivera from the Bears DC was heading to Detroit this week for an interview.

Jason:I think you need to list the Chiefs as having the OC (& maybe DC) they have right now for the following reasons:1. The current OC was the retiring coaches #1 choice to replace him.2. The current OC would actually make sense, and if he's not the HC, a HC would be really dumb to fire him as the OC given how productive the Chiefs O has been.3. As I understand it, he job is not currently vacant, so calling it vacant is actually incorrect.

With Detroit, I've also seen Cleveland OC Maurice Carthon and Giants DC Tim Lewis named as candidates likely to be brought in for interview.

Jason, Rams Team President John Shaw today confirmed that they have permission to talk to Bears DC Ron Rivera.

The Texans have an interview with OC Gary Kubiak this week while the Broncos have a BYE.I like the sounds of this due to having Dan Reeves on board and Kubiak being a Houston native with Mom & Pop still here. It will take some serious talk to make him leave Shanny but I'd love to have him home.

Texans to Interview Broncos Coordinator KubiakOffensive Guru Will Meet With Owner McNair During Bye WeekDENVER (Jan. 2) - Broncos offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak will be interviewed by Texans owner Bob McNair later this week about replacing Dom Capers. Denver coach Mike Shanahan said McNair contacted him Monday and planned a trip to Denver later this week. The Broncos have a bye week. NFL rules allow assistants of playoff teams in their bye week to be interviewed once by teams looking for coaches.Shanahan also said he has received preliminary contact from another team he did not want to identify until they make an official request to talk to Kubiak.Kubiak has been Shanahan's offensive coordinator since 1995 and has overseen one of the most productive offenses in the league. He was a prime head-coaching candidate when the Broncos won their two Super Bowls, in 1997 and '98, although his name hasn't come up as much recently. He's hot again, though, thanks to Denver's 13-3 record and an offense ranked fifth in the NFL.So far, there are openings in Houston, Minnesota, New Orleans, Green Bay and St. Louis."If they're smart, he'll get one of those jobs," Shanahan said. "I'm just hoping they're not smart enough to hire him."Kubiak was not immediately available for comment.01/02/06 17:18 EST

there's a whole lot of smoke with some of this "rumored" interest in most of these coordinators

Head Coach -- VACANT -- Mike Sherman was fired after a 4-12 season. Sherman faced a daunting task given the team's record and the fact new GM Ted Thompson likely wants his own horse in the race.

I don't believe the coordinators (or any of the assistants) have technically been fired yet, but you are probably not going out on much of a limb here. One of the Packer beat reporters in Milwaukee reported that all assistants will be paid through the end of their contracts on 1/31.

Ron Rivera, DC, Chicago -- Mentioned in Detroit news as candidate for Lions HC job. Also, Rams President John Shaw has confirmed that Rivera has been given permission to interview for the Rams head coaching vacancy.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOO! I don't want him going anywhere!

As a result, the Vikings will begin their coaching search by interviewing Childress and Cottrell today.
They also have interest in interviewing Gregg Williams when he becomes available for interview.Link

Hey Cletius,I agree that several of the teams I've mentioned still technically have assistants under contract. However, I think in most cases, the HC will have the discretion there. In some cases [e.g., Mike Zimmer being kept by Parcells in Dallas], they will stay onboard, in most cases, not. Let's leave these vacant until we get an official word from the organizations one way or the other.

Cowboys Waiting to Hear if Parcells Will ReturnAfter Disappointing Season, Coach Gets Away to Ponder DecisionBy STEPHEN HAWKINS, AP SportsIRVING, Texas (Jan. 2) - Bill Parcells' third season in Dallas was a disappointment, even though the Cowboys had a winning record. Now, owner Jerry Jones and everybody else will wait to see if Parcells plans to come back. After a season-ending 20-10 loss to St. Louis on Sunday night, a game that began about an hour after the Cowboys (9-7) were eliminated from playoff contention, Parcells said he had "to get away from it for awhile" before deciding if he'd return. On Monday, the three-year anniversary of the day he took the Cowboys' job, Parcells didn't talk to the media - or to his team as a group. Players leaving the team's Valley Ranch complex said Parcells said nothing about what he planned to do."I don't really get a sense from him at all," quarterback Drew Bledsoe said. "I have said all along his energy throughout the season and his energy level at the end of the year does not lead me to believe that he's too tired or too old or whatever to continue to do this."Parcells, 64, has a year left on his $17 million, four-year contract, though he has said he has to evaluate at the end of each season if he has the energy and dedication necessary to keep coaching.Jones said he didn't have a timetable for a decision from Parcells, who is 25-24 with the Cowboys - a big improvement from 15-33 the three seasons before him.Bledsoe, among several of his former players who have reunited with Parcells in Dallas, visited with the coach briefly Monday."I'd be very surprised if he's not back next year," said Bledsoe, whose 3,639 yards passing were the second-best in team history."His body language is always the same way," cornerback Aaron Glenn said. "I think he'll be back. I don't think he'll want to go out on a note like this."After starting 7-3, Dallas lost three of four games, a stretch that ended with a 35-7 loss at Washington. The Cowboys stayed in wild-card contention by bouncing back with a 24-20 win at Carolina on Christmas Eve, but their playoff fate was sealed when the Redskins and Panthers won road games Sunday.Despite being the first Dallas team to start 7-3 and miss the playoffs, Parcells has laid a solid foundation and finally put together a Cowboys team built in his image. What he has to decide is how long it will take to complete the task, and if he wants to stay to see it through. The longer Parcells takes to decide, the more he'll like what he sees.Running back Julius Jones, despite a bad finale that left him 7 yards shy of 1,000, and tight end Jason Witten are building blocks on offense. Bledsoe, signed for two more seasons, is a veteran quarterback Parcells trusts - and whom he drafted No. 1 overall in 1993.The defense, which Parcells switched to his beloved 3-4 scheme last offseason, is stocked with talented young players: Pro Bowl safety Roy Williams, cornerback Terence Newman, linebacker DeMarcus Ware (8 1/2 sacks) and ends Marcus Spears and Chris Canty. There will again be room under the salary cap, though the Cowboys likely won't need the same kind of spending spree they had last offseason when Jones spent $32 million in signing bonuses to add Bledsoe and four other significant free agents.Parcells, who has said Dallas will be his last coaching stop, wasn't ready to look forward after the listless final game."I would certainly liked to have finished on a good note," he said. "I think we're a better team by far than what we were last year, but I'm not overly proud of 9-7. I'm really not."With the changes that were made after going 6-10 in 2004, and after the strong start that had the Cowboys atop the NFC East, Parcells and Jones weren't satisfied with just a winning record. Ten seasons have passed since the Cowboys won three Super Bowls in a four-year span."It's very disappointing," Jones said. "Because we made commitments around here, and we had goals and we wanted to give ourselves an opportunity to compete in the playoffs."Eleven of the Cowboys' games were decided by seven points or less, with all six close wins by four points or less. They twice lost on last-play field goals.01/02/06 19:51 EST

I know this has it's own thread, but wanted to post it in here because it relates to the main topic.

Redskins asst. Williams signs three-year deal

NFL.com wire reports

WASHINGTON (Jan. 3, 2006) -- Washington Redskins assistant Gregg Williams, considered a top prospect for several of the vacant NFL head coaching positions, signed a three-year contract to remain with the team.

Williams, the former coach of the Buffalo Bills, has produced a top 10 defense in each of his two years with the Redskins. This year's unit ranked ninth and helped the team secure its first playoff berth in six years.

Williams was one of Joe Gibbs' first recruits when the Hall of Fame coach came out of retirement in January 2004. Williams signed a three-year deal with the title of "assistant head coach-defense" and has been seen as natural successor when Gibbs retires again.

But Williams was also expected to be courted by any of the NFL teams that are looking for coaches this offseason. Williams said he turned down two chances to interview last year, but he had indicated recently he might be more tempted to talk to suitors this year.

Could we also do the same with the coaches and front office personnel?

I don't know what the ground rules are for rumor mongering in this thread, but.... it really looks like Herm Edwards will be headed to KC for their 2nd and 3rd, maybe 2nd and 4th round picks in 2006. I've looked at both the KC and NYJ fan forums, and the supposed solid, but unconfirmed sources there are in agreement on this. In addition, there are many radio reports that seem to lend credibilty. My guess is that the Jets will let Edwards go, for two picks, and install OC Hiemerdinger as the new HC. Since there is no official confirmation, it has to be considered heresay, but as a rabid Jets homer, I put this at 80%. Less certainty on who replaces Edwards though.

I have always thought Mike Singletary would make a great NFL head coach. He may be a better head coach than assistant. Does anyone plan on interviewing this guy? I would love for the Saints to interview him.
Me too Monarch. But considering the raiders love of dipping in the 49ers bowl, consider Mike a raider candidate right now.

Given the fact that the Lions have been given permission to speak to Al Saunders, let's not forget that KC was the team that coveted Joey Harrington and were rumored to be seeking him in a trade. So if Al Saunders is hired as the coach, do not be surprised at all to see Joey Harrington back as the QB for the Detroit Lions.

Word is the hotel and dinner tab to have Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Brad Childress in town Monday evening to interview for the Vikings' head coaching job was nearly $3,000. Childress, 49, is believed to be the Vikings' top choice to succeed fired Mike Tice.If the Vikings can outmaneuver the Packers for Childress, he could be announced as coach by Monday. The Vikings say they will pay competitively for the coach they want.

 I knew we would lose him one of these years, and I'm dreading it. He's going to make some team very happy. One thing about Childress, he LOVES to run the ball and that's something I know he'll stress [balance] versus his time with Reid. As long as Reid doesn't promot Marty Morhinweg to OC, I won't have a cerebral hemorrhage.

But Marty Morhinweg was great in Detroit , don't you remember the jugernot that was the Lions offense. In 2 seasons with the Lions, Marty Morhinweg goes 5-27 with 0 road wins and 0 wins against teams whose record was above 500.

He is known as a good WB coach but if he gets the OC job, I would drop MCNabb a few spots on my draft sheets.

The 38-year-old Heckert had served as the team's head of personnel for the past few years and was the Vikings' top choice to head up its personnel department. Why do they list the guys age. Are they trying to get the rest of us to jump off a cliff.

remember, it's not what you know but rather who you know. The number 1 reason why kids should play HS sports. Helps the youngin's learn this leason early in life

Steve Loney is being interviewed for the Arizona OL coach position. Linehan is interviewing in Houston, and might interview in MN. O'Leary offered Tice a coaching spot at Central Florida. Tice has received a call from a team, but will not say who. Did say it wasn't the Packers (yet).Vikings are interviewing Ted Cottrell, but he isn't the only minority they are interviewing. Edit: Cottrell is also interviewing for a DCoordinator spot somewhere. Thought it was Denver or SD, but I can't remember now and can't find the article.

I've got a lot of mixed feelings about this. I really like Herm. Always have. I think he's the kind of coach that keeps his players focused and on task. But, I think he's a bit afraid of change. In particular, he's faithful to a fault. Regardless, I'd hate to lose him. On the other hand, Heimerdinger might be a good HC. I'm sure he learned a lot from his years under Jeff Fisher, who I think is one of the best. That said, getting 2 early draft picks back in return for Herm from KC would be super. The aging O-line has me worried. Not so much next year, the years following. I think it would be hard to turn that down if the Jets think they have a very capable successor in waiting. Question is, do they? Maybe Farve said he'll play for them if they hire Sherman? OH NO...that would be VERY VERY bad. But not realistic.

Bottom line is that I'll be very sad to see Herm go if this happens. But you gotta do what's best for the organization to have a chance to win. Herm's been under extreme pressure the last 2 years so perhaps a move now would be good for him. But then, what do I know. I'm just a desperate Jets fan that wants to forget about the disaster called the 2005 season.

Green Bay to interview Wade Phillips, Jim Bates, and Sean Payton.

Chargers' Phillips will interview with Packers

NFL.com wire reports

GREEN BAY, Wis. (Jan. 4, 2006) -- San Diego Chargers defensive coordinator Wade Phillips will interview for the Green Bay Packers ' vacant coaching job on Jan. 9, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

Phillips, who just concluded his second year as an assistant to Chargers coach Marty Schottenheimer, was the Buffalo Bills' coach from 1998-2000. He also was Denver's coach from 1993-94 and twice has served as an interim head coach, in New Orleans and Atlanta.

Phillips is one of several candidates expected to be interviewed by Packers general manager Ted Thompson, who fired coach Mike Sherman.

Sherman said he wasn't given a reason why he was fired a day after the Packers beat the Seattle Seahawks to finish the season 4-12, their worst record in 15 years.

"I think Ted just felt there was a need at this time to make a change," Sherman said.

Sherman, who signed a two-year contract extension in August, was stripped of general manager duties a year ago and replaced by Thompson.

"Sometimes you just need your own guy. Maybe that's the situation that happened here," Sherman said.

Sherman said he had no regrets: "I gave this job everything I had. I am proud of what we accomplished during that time."

In addition to Phillips, Thompson said he will speak to current Packers defensive coordinator Jim Bates about the job.

The Dallas Morning News reported that the Packers and New Orleans Saints were granted permission to interview Cowboys offensive coordinator Sean Payton.

Gary O'Hagan, agent for former Detroit Lions coach Steve Mariucci, said the Packers had not contacted Steve Mariucci as of Jan. 3. Mariucci was the Packers quarterbacks coach under Mike Holmgren and was fired during the season as Detroit's coach.

If I had an opening at HC for my team I think I'd just give Mike Sherman a new job over all these coordinators who have never done the job or guys who have tried and done poorly. As one example of many.... Wade Phillips - EXCELLENT DC, not so good so far when running the whole show.Sherman was pretty good in Green Bay. Sure they had a down year, but we expected that with the players they lost on Defense and the injuries to the key players on the O.I expected Tice and Capers to get the boot. Martz was a surprise, but you can kinda see reason, but Sherman was just a shocker too me.

As a Packer fan, I think Sherman would be a good fit on a team with veteran players who aren't that far away. Sherman's not a great motivator, nor is he firey. But, he does connect with players, and could help an under-achieving team be competitive.

Is it true that Childress has never called plays at Philadelphia? Did he call plays at Wisconsin?

Childress called plays at Wisconsin, and although Reid calls the majority of plays in Philly, he has at times handed the duty over to Childress.Philly.com: Coordinated Effort Could Boost Coaches

Indianapolis assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach Jim Caldwell is next on the list, as the FAN has learned the Wilf's checked into a hotel in Indianapolis on Wednesday. The Wilf's did speak with Caldwell on Wednesday, but the two sides could have just been exchanging pleasantries with an interview scheduled for Thursday. Another possiblity would be the Wilf's actually interviewed Caldwell on Wednesday and will stop in Chicago on the way back Thursday morning to speak with Ron Rivera. The FAN also spoke to Buffalo defensive coordinator Jerry Gray and Bears defensive coordinator Ron Rivera on Wednesday afternoon, and neither possible candidate had been contacted by the Vikings for an interview. Rivera said he has been contacted by a few teams for interviews, but with the Bears in the playoffs he currently is waiting to see how things shake out before he can begin seriously looking at a head coaching position. Gray, on the other hand, said he has interviews with “a couple” teams this weekend, but did not divulge which clubs expressed interest. He did, however, include a recommendation for his former colleague and friend Cottrell, who has interviews for head coaching positions seven times including Wednesday’s interview.

Also, LOTS of talk that Tice is going to be hired by GB. Read that Mortenson mentioned it as well?

hard to believe, but Mortensen did report this rumor:
ESPN's Chris Mortensen, appearing on a Green Bay radio show, said the Packers were interested in talking to fired Vikings coach Mike Tice, but Tice told the Minneapolis Star-Tribune his agent, Jimmy Sexton, had not said anything about the Packers' inquiry.

"My agent has not made me aware that there's been any contact with the Green Bay Packers," Tice said. "But I do know something is going on" with a team Tice refused to identify.

Carl’s last coach?

Chiefs show interest in Fassel as hot list becomes one shorter

By ADAM TEICHERThe Kansas City Star

One of the candidates to be the Chiefs’ next head coach came off the job market Tuesday. A second was interviewing elsewhere, while a third was apparently on hold.

Still, the process to replace **** Vermeil appeared to be advancing. Baltimore general manager Ozzie Newsome said he had granted Chiefs president/general manager Carl Peterson permission to speak with Ravens offensive coordinator Jim Fassel, and Newsome thought the two were meeting Tuesday night.

Fassel is the former head coach of the New York Giants. He coached the Giants to the Super Bowl after the 2000 season. He spent the last two seasons with the Ravens.

Meanwhile, Washington defensive coordinator Gregg Williams agreed to a contract extension, effectively removing himself as a candidate for the Chiefs and other teams. The Chiefs had tried Monday to set up an interview with Williams for next week.

Peterson also indicated for the first time that his most recent contract extension would be his last and that he hoped he wouldn’t have to hire yet another coach after this one.

“When Lamar (Hunt) and Clark (Hunt) asked me last year to re-up for another four years starting this February, I said, ‘This will be the last ride for me,’ ” Peterson said. “I’ve been here a long time and love it. I’ve got the best ownership in the National Football League. But I would like to think this next head football coach is going to be here longer than (me).”

Chiefs offensive coordinator Al Saunders, who had interviewed with Peterson on Monday, was in Minnesota meeting with the Vikings about their vacant head-coaching job. The Chiefs had yet to ask the Jets for permission to speak with their head coach, Herman Edwards.

“Officially, I haven’t received a phone call from Kansas City, and I’m not expecting one right now,” Jets general manager Terry Bradway said on his radio show on Tuesday in New York.

Other candidates appeared to include former Cleveland coach Butch Davis and two offensive coordinators, San Diego’s Cam Cameron and Denver’s Gary Kubiak.

Davis, fired by the Browns in the 2004 season, issued a statement through the NFL Network that he was interested in getting back into coaching. Davis has been an analyst for the network.

Peterson wouldn’t confirm or deny any candidates at Vermeil’s farewell news conference. He did acknowledge meeting Monday with Saunders.

“I thought it went well,” Peterson said. “I told him it’s the beginning of an interview. It was a lot less formal than formal. One of the reasons is that I’ve known Al since 1974.

“There are some very talented candidates out there that I want to talk to. I owe that to the Lamar Hunt family. Al is certainly a candidate and a consideration. I know Al. I know his strengths and weaknesses. We had a very good interview that’s not concluded. Al needs to also pursue some opportunities specific to interviews he has. And then there are other considerations. It’s more than just the offensive side of the football.”

Saunders was scheduled to interview Thursday with the Houston Texans
