Coaching Carousel: Master Thread (1 Viewer)

IRVING, Texas - Cowboys defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer turned down the University of Nebraska head coaching job in 2003, but this year he is being courted by another NFL team.

Zimmer will interview for the St. Louis Rams head coaching position left vacant by Mike Martz, who was fired Monday.

The Green Bay Packers also have received permission to speak with Cowboys assistant head coach Sean Payton about their head coaching job. The Packers fired Mike Sherman on Monday.

"I had a couple of teams call and ask to interview each coordinator for head coaching jobs," Cowboys owner Jerry Jones did say on his morning radio show on The Ticket. "This is to be expected."

As things now stand, the Rams are expected to interview Chicago defensive coordinator Ron Rivera at the end of this week, and New York Giants defensive coordinator Tim Lewis at the beginning of next week.

According to league sources, the Rams have expressed interest in Philadelphia defensive coordinator Jim Johnson. But at age 64, and firmly ensconced with Eagles, Johnson may not be interested in becoming an NFL head coach at this stage of his career. Johnson, one of the game's most highly respected defensive coordinators, played quarterback at the University of Missouri from 1959-62.

The Rams, more specifically team president John Shaw, are continuing to work through a list of candidates. League sources have told the Post-Dispatch that Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer will be interviewed by the team, although it is uncertain when that interview will take place.

Zimmer, 49, is a native of Peoria, Ill., who played quarterback and linebacker at Illinois State from 1974-76, and was an assistant coach at the University of Missouri in 1979-80.

Despite speculation to the contrary, the Rams are not believed to be interested at this time in Denver offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak, Kansas City offensive coordinator Al Saunders (a former Rams assistant), or former New Orleans head coach Jim Haslett.

The Herm Edwards to KC thing is being reported as a done deal in both cities. This thing is at 95% now.

I know this is not relating to HC or OC/DC but ESPN.com reporting that the Falcons will not retain their QB coach.ATLANTA -- Despite claims earlier in the week that there would be no staffing changes after their disappointing 2005 season, the Atlanta Falcons announced Wednesday they will not renew the contract of quarterbacks coach Mike Johnson. The move essentially represents the dismissal of an assistant once thought to be very close to quarterback Michael Vick."I have decided not to extend Mike Johnson's contract," coach Jim Mora said. "Mike has worked hard as our quarterbacks coach for the last two seasons and we wish him the very best in the future."In addition, the voluntary exits of both the Falcons' strength and conditioning coaches will allow Mora to completely revamp that area. Longtime strength and conditioning coach Al Miller will retire and his assistant, Rocky Colburn, will join the University of Alabama staff of Mike Shula. It is the departure of Johnson, who worked directly with Vick, that is mildly surprising. Johnson, 38, joined the Atlanta staff in 2002 as the team's wide receivers coach. He was named the quarterbacks coach in 2003, in part because it was believed he had a strong rapport with Vick, had played quarterback in college and at the professional level, and, like Vick, is a left-handed passer. The Atlanta staff, particularly offensive coordinator Greg Knapp, has been under fire from fans in recent weeks. The offense struggled in 2005 and, despite being selected for the NFC Pro Bowl squad, Vick seemed to regress in some areas. It is not believed that the jobs of Knapp or defensive coordinator Ed Donatell are in any jeopardy. Before coming to Atlanta, under then-coach Dan Reeves, Johnson was an assistant with the San Diego Chargers.Among Johnson's possible successors could be third-string quarterback Ty Detmer, a 14-year NFL veteran who may retire. Detmer, who won the 1990 Heisman Trophy at Brigham Young, hasn't taken a snap since 2001. Mora declined to comment on Detmer's playing status.Miller, 58, is a 20-year veteran who served on three Reeves' staffs -- with Denver, the New York Giants and Atlanta -- and was retained by Mora when he was named Falcons coach in 2004. Miller has long been regarded as one of the NFL's top strength coaches.Colburn played defensive back at Alabama in the early 1980s, and is returning to his alma mater, where he served as strength and conditioning coach 1987-92. Colburn, 42, joined the Atlanta staff in 1999.

Looking to verify, but Madison ESPN Radio 1070 reported this morning that Green Bay has contacted San Francisco about Mike McCarthy. He is now my dark-horse to get this job. Thompson is familiar with him. He knows the Green Bay offense. He might be the type of hire that makes Favre stay. It sounds like Mr. Childress missed his scheduled interview yesterday.

McCarthy is making too much sense right now......

http://www.sf49ers.com/team/CoachesBio.asp?CoachID=77

With innovative game plans that feature both chain-moving power and quick-strike passing, McCarthy is widely known as one of the top offensive minds in the NFL. McCarthy is a reputed developer of quarterbacks, having tutored Brett Favre, Jake Delhomme, Jeff Blake, Marc Bulger, Matt Hasselbeck and Aaron Brooks.

McCarthy joins San Francisco after serving as the New Orleans Saints offensive coordinator since 2000. After leading the NFC in scoring in 2002 with 432 points and 49 touchdowns, the Saints had another record-breaking season in 2003. The 340 points the Saints scored that season was the eighth-highest in club history, and all four of the team’s scoring totals since 2000 under McCarthy rank in the club's all-time top 10. Under McCarthy’s direction, the New Orleans offensive unit set 10 team records and 25 individual records.

Until McCarthy's hiring, the Saints hadn't produced a 1,000-yard wide receiver in eight years, but under McCarthy, Joe Horn caught 437 passes for 6,289 yards and 45 touchdowns and was selected for four Pro Bowls over a five-year span. Also until 2000, the team hadn't generated a 1,000-yard performance from a running back in a decade. But a Saints' running back has since reached the milestone each of his last five seasons. Two runing backs, Ricky Williams and Deuce McCallister, achieved this honor.

Following the 2000 season, McCarthy was chosen as the NFC Assistant Coach of the Year by USA Today. While coaching quarterbacks at Green Bay in 1999, the Packers ranked seventh in the NFL in passing and ninth overall in total offense with quarterback Brett Favre passing for 4,091 yards.

McCarthy also spent six seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs, serving as quarterbacks coach the last four years. As an offensive assistant in 1993-94, he worked closely with Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Montana. As quarterbacks coach from 1995-98, McCarthy's signal callers threw just 52 interceptions - the lowest total in the AFC during that period despite Kansas City using three starting quarterbacks during that span (Steve Bono, Rich Gannon and Elvis Grbac).

The Bills have called their third press conference in two days. At 2pm today they will have an announcement that should be about the GM's job. The press conference may also shed light on which coaches are gone from HC Mike Mularkey's staff. It has already been reported that OC Tom Clements has been fired and WIVB-TV is reporting that DC Jerry Gray has resigned. Gray is a candidate for the open head coaching job with the Texans. This leaves HC Mularkey with two huge holes in his coaching staff.

Verified. McCarthy will be brought in......

http://www.jsonline.com/packer/news/jan06/382813.asp

In seeking a replacement for fired coach Mike Sherman, Thompson is talking to a lot of young, offensive-minded assistant coaches and McCarthy fits that profile. Phillips, on the other hand, is a veteran coordinator who has served as a head coach in New Orleans (interim), Denver, Buffalo and Atlanta (interim).

Both assistants have connections to the Packers organization.

McCarthy, 42, was the Packers' quarterbacks coach in 1999 under Ray Rhodes and considers himself relatively close to Brett Favre. When McCarthy was fired with Rhodes' staff after one year, then-general manager Ron Wolf was interested in keeping him, but Sherman brought his own offensive staff and McCarthy went to New Orleans, where he eventually became offensive coordinator.

Saints quarterback Aaron Brooks had his best years under McCarthy and faltered badly this year after McCarthy left to become the offensive coordinator for 49ers coach Mike Nolan. The 49ers struggled offensively this year, and No. 1 pick, quarterback Alex Smith, did not play well after injuring his knee early in the season.

But the 49ers lack talent everywhere, and McCarthy has been part of a rebuilding project. Sources indicated that he would probably come to Green Bay this weekend for an interview.

hmmm maybe he is coming to MN.
A name that has surfaced as a candidate for the Vikings head coaching job is Colts quarterbacks coach Jim Caldwell. However, a VU source with the Colts has speculated that the Vikings interest – take it for what it’s worth – may be more due to the fact that Caldwell is African American than his viable chance of winning the job. The Vikings had already satisfied the "Rooney Rule" by interviewing defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell.
also
VU has been told that the Cowboys and Ravens both have an interest in adding Tice to their coaching staffs.

Interesting. Jerry Gray is one of the assistant coaches Joe Gibbs/Gregg Williams really wanted, but Buffalo did not release him when they fired Williams. If Gray is available, I wonder if Gibbs/Williams may hire him in some capacity.

That would be a colossal step back for Gray. He wants an NFL HC job, and would probably be unhappy "settling" for another DC position. To think he would go be a positional coach in D.C. makes little sense IMHO.

Pure rumor and speculation. This guy on the ESPN boards has posted supposed "inside info" from a few contacts he has in the past. He admits he doesn't know how reliable the info is, so take it for what it's worth.

This one is so hot it will burn your retnas reading it. Just got a call from my good friend in the Packers organization. Who do you think asked for and received permission to interview Darrell Bevell about a An assistant OC/QB job with the Vikings. Childress that is who. Also he skipped his interview with GB and has also informed Houston he will not interview with them. Yesterday his family was in town while as many know the Wilfs were in Indianapolis interviewing Caldwell but what is not being reported is that Childress went with them and it was to interview him for the Asst. Head Coach And Offensive Cordinator position. I e-mailed all to my other 2 sorces-One at Sporting News and the other working in the Jaguars office to see if they know the same or ahve heard anything. Remember he is telling what he heard this morning at work being whispered so as of right now it is all hear say but very interesting.

I understand that. But right now he is not employed. And he no lock for a HC job. So if he does not get one, he could be a very well paid assistant with the Redskins. If they can fit him in somehow.

RUMOR:

I have inside sources that have told me that the Minnesota Vikings have narrowed the choices to Ted Cotrell and Brad Childress. Childress gets the nod and will be announced sometime tomorrow. This is a great move for the Vikings franchise. Hopefully he will keep Cotrell around for the defensive side of the ball. Zygi was right when he said he was going to act fast to get a coach in there. Great choice.

Childress to the Vikes:

http://www.startribune.com/510/story/166073.html

Vikings will name coach: Brad Childress

Judd Zulgad and Sid Hartman, Star Tribune

Last update: January 05, 2006 – 5:50 PM

The Vikings will name Philadelphia offensive coordinator Brad Childress to be their next head coach on Friday, according to two persons with knowledge of the coaching search.

Childress, 49, interviewed with the Vikings on Tuesday and was scheduled to talk to the Green Bay Packers on Wednesday; that meeting never took place. Childress’ agent, Bob LaMonte, and Vikings executives were in contract talks late this afternoon. Childress and LaMonte did not return calls today.

The Vikings, who originally had Washington assistant head coach-defense Gregg Williams at the top of their list, turned their attention to Childress after Williams signed a three-year, $8 million contract to remain with the Redskins on Tuesday.

The Vikings also interviewed defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell, Kansas City assistant head coach and offensive coordinator Al Saunders, and Indianapolis assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach Jim Caldwell for the position. Mike Tice was fired as the Vikings head coach after Sunday’s regular-season finale against Chicago. Minnesota finished the season with a 9-7 record and missed the playoffs.

Childress has been an assistant coach with the Eagles since 1999. He joined the Philadelphia organization as Andy Reid’s quarterbacks coach in 1999 and became offensive coordinator in 2002. Reid, not Childress, has handled the play calling.

Before joining the Eagles, Childress was an assistant under Barry Alvarez at the University of Wisconsin.

Packers quarterbacks coach Darrell Bevell, who played under Childress at Wisconsin, is expected to be on Childress’ staff.

Childress was born June 27, 1956 in Aurora, Ill. He attended Marmion Military High School and Eastern Illinois University.

His college coaching career included stops at Illinois 1978-84 (running backs, wide receivers); Northern Arizona, 1986-89 (offensive coordinator); Utah 1990 (wide receivers); and Wisconsin, 1991 (running backs, offensive coordinator). He was quarterbacks coach for the Indianapolis Colts in 1985.

While coaching at Northern Arizona, he worked with three future NFL coaches: Reid, Bill Callahan (Raiders) and Marty Mornhinweg (Lions). Callahan is now coaching Nebraska, and Mornhinweg is an Eagles assistant.

Staff writer Kevin Seifert contributed to this story.

Scott Linehan, MIA OC, kicked off the Texans HC search.Al Saunders, KC OC, is in town for Part 2.Kippy Brown, HOU WR coach, also interviewed for the HC spot. From what I've read, the Linehan interview was very good. Heard the Saunders interview went really well. This is his 2nd time interviewing for the Texans HC. I know he loves the training facilities around here. And I'm still waiting to hear some things about the Kubiak possibilities.Damn it, if we are going to build a good OFF scheme......I would sure love to have Kubiak's knowledge. I mean, JEZZ.......the guy was Elway's backup for how many years? OFF CORD for the 49ers & Broncos.........worked with Steve Young and John Elway. I'd sure like him to teach either Carr or Vince Young a thing or 2 about being a QB and building that OL up.Al Saunders would be my 2nd choice for a new HC.

Adam Schefter reported on NFL Total Access last night that the Jets front office has confirmed that Herm Edwards will not return to the team. He has not officially been fired or relased from his contract but the KC deal is apparently pretty much done as far as the Jets are concerned.

Some interesting info about the negotiating tactics between the Jets and Chiefs in this New York Daily News article:

http://www.nydailynews.com/front/story/380556p-323159c.html

Jets & Chiefs draft a deal

K.C. giving in on Herm picks

BY RICH CIMINI

DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

Woody Johnson certainly looks like an owner ...

... but he has been undressed in dealing with Herm Edwards and Terry Bradway.

At 9:15 yesterday morning, Herm Edwards gathered his assistant coaches in a meeting room at Weeb Ewbank Hall and, for the first time, acknowledged his uncertain future as the Jets' coach. He told the coaches he was "in limbo."

At that point, the compensation talks between the Jets and Chiefs were stalled. By nightfall - after a high-stakes stare-down - the talks had resumed and the two sides were closing in on an agreement, according to two people close to the situation.

Barring a snag in negotiations, Edwards will be released today from his contract, pending approval by the NFL. Once that formality is cleared, he will be free to become the Chiefs' coach.

"They're talking, and that's a good sign," one person close to the talks said last night.

It was a crazy day, even by Jets standards. It included hardball negotiating tactics and rumors that Edwards had resigned.

The Jets, tired of being strung along in the Chiefs' game of hard-to-get, issued a 6 p.m. deadline, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. They gambled, calling the Chiefs' bluff. Shortly before 6, Chiefs president Carl Peterson phoned GM Terry Bradway to continue the negotiations.

Edwards' departure appeared to be a done deal, as many in the organization acknowledged what had become clear over the last two days: the coach's five-year run with the Jets is over. One TV report said Edwards had quit, but his agent, Gary O'Hagan, denied that.

In exchange for the rights to Edwards, the Jets will receive a compensation package that likely would include two middle-round draft picks, believed to be fourth- and fifth-rounders. That would be a below-market package; in 2001, the Chiefs surrendered second- and third-round picks for **** Vermeil, who was retired but under contract to the Rams.

Edwards will be permitted to open negotiations with the Chiefs, although that appears to be just a formality. He could receive as much as $4 million a year on a contract of at least four years. There are two years remaining on his Jets' contract at about $2 million annually.

Edwards, who put in a full day at the office, didn't want to comment last night from his home, according to his wife, Lia. Neither the Jets nor Chiefs have made public comments.

The reason for the divorce depends on whose side you believe. People close to Edwards said he feels underpaid and underappreciated, and that he was annoyed the club made no effort after the season to address his concerns. He told coaching friends in recent weeks that he was miserable in New York.

In the coaches' meeting, Edwards painted himself as the victim, saying he felt alienated by management, according to one staff member. Edwards told them he wanted to remain the Jets' coach, that management had forced his hand.

Privately, the organization had grown tired of Edwards, saying it never would have pursued the Chiefs' scenario if he simply had stated his desire to stay. Indeed, the Jets and Edwards' agent never talked about a contract extension, according to a person familiar with the situation.

The situation became so tense yesterday that a previously scheduled morning news conference, with Edwards and Bradway due to appear together to discuss last season and the future, was hastily canceled.

"We were not prepared to have it," team spokesman Ron Colangelo said. "Change of plans."

The Chiefs, perhaps in a ploy to pressure the Jets, continued to interview candidates for their head coaching vacancy. Yesterday, Peterson flew to Indianapolis to meet with Colts defensive coordinator Ron Meeks - at least the third candidate to be interviewed.

The Jets, not wanting to get stuck with a coach they didn't want (and a coach who apparently didn't want them), began to sweat it out. They issued the ultimatum. Resorting to a scare tactic, they told the Chiefs that, if they blew the deadline, they would announce that Edwards wanted to be released from his contract, according to ESPN.com. A team official denied that.

It turned out to be moot, as the Chiefs resumed talks before the 6 p.m. deadline.

The Jets must begin the search for a successor. They likely will interview their coordinators, Mike Heimerdinger, Donnie Henderson and Mike Westhoff. They also have been in contact with former Saints coach Jim Haslett. Former Giants coach and current Ravens coordinator Jim Fassel and former Packers coach Mike Sherman also are possibilities.

"I would think the guys will be disappointed that Herm leaves," center Pete Kendall said. "Whoever comes in is going to inherit a locker room of good guys, of pros, of guys who understand this type of stuff is part of the business."

A crazy business, whenever it involves the Jets.

Originally published on January 6, 2006
Both Adam Schefter and the Daily News article list Jets OC Mike Heimerdinger, Jets DC Donnie Edwards, and ex-Saints coach Jim Haslett as early contenders to succeed Edwards. The Daily News article also included Asst. Head Coach/Special Teams Coordinator Mike Westhoff as a short-list candidate.

Update on the Packers. According to this article, Childress left Philly thinking GB would be the best place for him but took the Minn job due to the full court press they put on and no guarantee he'd be hired by GB.Childress held over in talks with VikingsBy TOM SILVERSTEINtsilverstein@journalsentinel.comPosted: Jan. 5, 2006Green Bay - The Green Bay Packers won't get a chance to find out whether Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Brad Childress would have been a good fit for their vacant head coaching job, but it doesn't mean they are out of options. On Thursday, general manager Ted Thompson interviewed Dallas assistant head coach Sean Payton, one of the more promising offensive coaches he'll meet during the hiring process. Payton has strong ties to Dallas coach Bill Parcells and would offer Thompson the young, personable leader he is seeking to inject life into the team. It's unclear how his interview went, but from most accounts Payton impressed officials with his intelligence and football acumen.Childress was supposed to interview with Thompson on Wednesday but the Minnesota Vikings got serious in their pursuit of him after an interview Tuesday and convinced him to stay while they conducted interviews with other potential candidates.According to an NFL source, Childress, a former University of Wisconsin assistant coach, left Philadelphia thinking Green Bay might be the best place for him, but the Vikings' urgency to complete a deal was too much to pass up. Unsure whether the Packers would hire him, Childress went for the sure thing with the Vikings.Minnesota has not officially announced Childress' hiring and the Eagles coach still has an interview scheduled with the Packers on Tuesday, but sources said an agreement with the Vikings would be wrapped up soon. Acquaintances of Childress' say one of the first people he'll hire for his coaching staff is Packers quarterbacks coach Darrell Bevell, who played under Childress at Wisconsin.Bevell's contract is set to expire and he will soon be free to join Childress. Since Thompson is focusing mostly on offensive assistant coaches, it's likely former coach Mike Sherman's entire offensive staff will be different next season. If Thompson is serious about wanting quarterback Brett Favre to return, Payton might be the man he is looking for. The 42-year-old Payton played quarterback in college and the pros, served as quarterbacks coach under West Coast-offense disciples Ray Rhodes and Jon Gruden in Philadelphia and held offensive coordinator positions under Jim Fassel in New York and Parcells in Dallas.Payton helped resurrect the quarterback careers of Kerry Collins in New York and Vinny Testaverde and Drew Bledsoe in Dallas. He also managed to coax a 3,000-yard season out of young Cowboys QB Quincy Carter in his first season as passing game coordinator. His years with Gruden and Fassel prepared him for the West Coast offense and his years with Parcells were invaluable in learning the running game, play-calling and player motivation. His interview with Thompson will be a big determining factor in whether he becomes a finalist."He's the new breed guy coming up," said a close friend of Payton's. "He's a head coach. He has no time for drama and everything else. He just wants to coach. He's interested in living a very balanced life."Early in Payton's tenure in Philadelphia, he worked with former Packers quarterback Ty Detmer and there's a chance he would ask Detmer to become a part of his staff if named head coach. Detmer, a backup in Atlanta, just finished his 14th season in the National Football League and if he doesn't return, is expected to go into coaching. The combination of Payton and Detmer, the latter of whom came to Green Bay the same year Favre did and spent four years as his backup, might be enough to entice Favre to come back for another season. Payton's expertise in coaching quarterbacks might be what Favre needs to bounce back from his worst season."Sean can show to Brett, 'This is where Kerry Collins was, this is where Drew Bledsoe was and this is how I got them to do what they should be doing,' " the friend said. "That's one guy who could point to that."Whether Payton is ready to assume the role of a head coach is something Thompson will have to determine. It's unclear if Payton has additional duties as assistant head coach under Parcells, but he has been considered for a head-coaching job before - with the Oakland Raiders two years ago - and Wednesday had an introductory interview with the New Orleans Saints in San Antonio about their opening. He is expected to meet with them again in New Orleans."I don't want Payton to leave; he's a great coach," Cowboys guard Marco Rivera, a former Packer, told the Dallas Morning News. "I couldn't imagine trying to replace that guy. I've only had one year with him, and I'm already excited about next year."He sees the game of football with a different attitude. He has a brilliant mind for offense, and he knows how to convey that to players." Cleveland offensive coordinator Maurice Carthon, meanwhile, is expected to formally interview today. He comes with a reputation for being a disciplinarian, much in the mold of his former coach, Parcells. He has served as offensive coordinator in Dallas, Detroit and Cleveland and comes with a strong offensive background.Meanwhile, the Packers are expected to interview Chicago defensive coordinator Ron Rivera on Saturday in Chicago. They will probably interview San Francisco offensive coordinator Mike McCarthy on Sunday in Green Bay.Also, it doesn't appear Sherman is interested in replacing Childress in Philadelphia, where he would be reunited with close friend Andy Reid. Sherman told WTMJ radio Thursday that he was interested in returning to football only as a head coach. The Eagles are expected to interview Kansas City offensive coordinator Al Saunders this weekend.

:thumbup:Keep the news and updates coming guys...I think the front page is now up-to-date. I heard on Mike & Mike yesterday that Kirk Ferentz has agreed to an interview with the Texans, has that been confirmed by anyone?

The New Orleans Saints called Mike Martz on Thursday night about their head-coaching vacancy. According to league sources, Martz was contacted by Saints general manager Mickey Loomis. A tentative visit with the Saints and Martz is planned for the end of next week. This development occurred on the day the Rams officially severed ties with Martz, finalizing a settlement for the final year of his coaching contract."We settled all our contract issues with Mike and wish him the best of luck in the future," Rams president John Shaw said Thursday evening.Shaw would not disclose the amount of the settlement. But it's believed to be in the neighborhood of about half the $3.25 million Martz was scheduled to make next season.

Jason....I can help confirm a few things, but nothing on the Iowa coach.Scott Linehan, MIA OC, started off the interviews with the Texans.Al Saunders, KC OC, was brought in for the 2nd interview with the Texans....he was thought of before the Dom Capers hiring in 2002.Kippy Brown, HOU WR coach, has been interviewed also.TODAY........Bob McNair/Dan Reeves (not sure about Casserly) are in route to Denver to speak to Gary Kubiak, OC.

From the Blogger (relating to Philly OC):

The Minnesota Vikings will name Eagles offensive coordinator Brad Childress as the team's head coach today. The Eagles probably will not name a new offensive coordinator, opting instead to let assistant head coach Marty Mornhinweg handle that role. Mornhinweg was already involved in game-planning and assisting Reid with the play calls.

More Viking rumors from the guy with sources at the ESPN boards:

Hi:

I am not sure what has already been reported but here is what I have from 2 sources. Childress during his press conference today will announce his OC & DC. OC is most likely (95%) going to be Darell Bevell and DC will be Philadelphia LBers coach Spagnola. After these hires he will use their advice and knowledge to hire other assistants although Chris Walsh a former Viking player has been recommended to him to be Special Teams Cordinator from the Vikings front office. That is all I have. Bevell while very knowledgeable kinda surprises me and leads me to believe it will be like Philadelphia where Childress was the OC but Reid called the plays. May be the same scenario here. Bevell has the OC title but Childress calls the plays.

Good stuff, I'd heard that Bevell was a lock for a position with Childress wherever Brad got a job. They're supposedly tight and Bevell figures this is his best chance to get an OC job to ultimately build up his own resume and become a HC at some point. Bevell played for Childress at Wisconsin, so they go back a ways.Spagnuolo would be a less intriguing choice. In terms of the Eagles staff, Spagnuolo is the least experienced [replacing Ron Rivera as our LB coach when Rivera joined Chicago as DC] and I've never heard an inkling out of the PHI camp that he was a rising star. Could be a great fit, who knows, but his resume is far from sterling...his first NFL coaching job of any kind was with the Eagles in 1999. He did some NFL Europe coaching, but mostly coached collegiately at second tier programs.

NFL.com is reporting that the Chiefs drove a hard bargain with the Jets and got the compensation demand for Herm Edwards dropped from a 4th and 5th round pick to just a 4th rounder. The league has blessed the deal and it appears that the only holdup now is Edwards and Carl Peterson coming to terms on a contract. I'm thinking this is turning out to be a pretty sweet deal for KC.

Chiefs and Jets agree on compensation

NFL.com wire reports

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Jan. 6, 2006) -- Herman Edwards could be on his way to becoming the next Chiefs coach after Kansas City and the Jets agreed on a compensation deal.

The Chiefs would give the Jets a surprisingly low fourth-round pick if they hire Edwards, who has ties to the team and general manager Carl Peterson. Because Edwards was still under contract with the Jets, the Chiefs needed to give up something to get him.

Chiefs spokesman Bob Moore said that Peterson was on his way to New York to begin negotiations. The commissioner's office approved the fourth-round pick as compensation earlier Jan. 6 and granted Kansas City permission to speak with Edwards, who technically remains the head coach of the Jets.

The breakthrough ended several days of speculation and behind-the scenes maneuvering among Edwards, the Jets and the Chiefs, who are looking to replace the retired **** Vermeil.

Moore said he did not think a deal would be wrapped up right away but added "that could change."

Negotiations are not expected to be lengthy between Peterson and Edwards, who was clearly the Chiefs first choice all along. Peterson, perhaps only to add to his bargaining leverage with New York, had also talked with Kansas City offensive coordinator Al Saunders and others.

Here's an I told you so thread.... I knew this was a done deal several days ago, Edwards to KC. Reports are saying that neither AC will be considered for the HC spot on the Jets, but I just can't buy into the fact that Hiemerdinger has no shot. It just makes too much sense in so many ways to install Heimerdinger, continuity, he was a Bradway hire, and he's been an HC candidate for a couple of years. Been to 3 super bowls, has 2 rings as a coach. But, this IS the Jets we are talking about, so they will probably hire Haslett. I will put a gun to my head.

what if they hire Mice Tice, who strangely is missing from Jason Wood's list

Haslett is a 357 magnum. Tice would be a .38. Either way..... I'm pullin the trigger.

Heard on ESPN that Fisher may be gone.
If this is true I think this is a foolish move.Every team that was going to dump their HC did so on Mon and has a week headstart on the Titans.

Fisher had a team decimated by cap cuts and I believe they're over the cap again this year. It's not (entirely) his fault they kept restructuring contracts for one last push. Letting go of Fisher at this point serves no good purpose, and to blame their sub-par season on Fisher would be, as I said earlier, foolish.

Fisher will shoot to the top of everyones HC wishlist if he is let go.

Has there been any speculation about whether or not Jimmy Johnson will return to coaching? I remember watching a Fox gameday show and the notion being implied that Johnson has been talking with owners about returning to coaching, although it's probably unlikely. He'd have to be one of the top coaching candidates if someone were to lure him out of retirement though.

Mort just said 4 years 12 mil for Herm in KC. Jets get 4th round pick
Also added that Greg Williams probably will stay put in Washington.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2284695

Redskins defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, who signed a three-year contract for $7.8 million, is staying put, ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported.

Teams looking for head coaches did complain about reports that Williams was precluded by the contract from interviewing for any vacancies this year -- the league reminded the Redskins they can't do that.

Still, he's not going anywhere and Mortensen has confirmed that if and when Joe Gibbs retires, Williams will get a $1 million bonus if he is still on staff and is not named as Gibbs' successor.

Williams, 47, compiled a 17-31 record in three seasons (2001-2003) as the Buffalo Bills' head coach. He joined the Redskins in 2004, with his contract then making him one of the NFL's top-paid assistants, and has steadily rehabilitated his image. Most league observers feel Williams will be markedly better in a second stint as a head coach.

Williams is one of the game's most creative defensive minds. He has fashioned a scheme that elevates the performance of the players in it. The Redskins defense statistically ranked ninth in the NFL this year and third in 2004.

Feel free to take him off the list.

As a Packer fan - I was kind of thinking they might target Mooch, another former Holmgrein disciple.

Surprised no post, I was busy with baby duty today. Didn't anyone watch the Giants game? or ESPN? It was on one of them.Fisher was asked if he'd go to the Rams like Herm Edwards to KC. He said "I wouldn't say no." The piece alluded to that statement starting off a bidding war amongst NFL teams this week for Fisher's services and then spoke of BB and Parcells and Herm and how NFL didn't want coaches leaving teams like this and.......Cmon, someone else had to see this

I see many similarities between Sherman and Marriucci. If I'm Ted Thompson, I already know what that kind of coach is like. I'd rather find someone with some emotion and fire.

I think it was Mort reporting there are talks of Sherman to the Jets.
 But Terry Bradway had a press conference today and disclosed nothing publicly. The speculation is hot and heavy and I've heard the following names bandied about over the last few days:Eric Mangini, NE DC

Jim Haslett, Ex-NO HC

Jim Fassel, Bal OC

Mike Sherman, Ex-GB HC

Mike Heimerdinger, Jets OC

Donnie Henderson, Jets DC

Being a longtime Packer fan & living in CT - I'd love to see Sherman come to the Jets. It makes sense - I know he spent time in New England (CCSU Grad), perhaps a return home & more Green in the hip-pocket?!?!

The Vikings have resumed their search for a personnel director to work with Childress and Brzezinski. In addition to incumbents Scott Studwell and Jeff Robinson, three more outside candidates have been discussed: New England director of college scouting Tom Dimitroff, Denver director of pro personnel Rick Smith and Philadelphia assistant director of player personnel Jason Licht.
