Coast Guard searching for missing boat w/NFL players aboard (1 Viewer)

Heard on Fox Sports News, other 3 men found clinging to the outboard motor off of the boat! UNBELEIVABLE!! (No Link yet... forthcoming no doubt)

I am not making it up, they interupted Schefters report on Housh, I have been searching with no luck as well.. I dont make the news, only report it...

I hope it's true too, but the boat was a single engine boat, was it not? And the pics of the capsized boat shows a motor on the back that was being held onto. So, was it a dual-engine boat or single?

I hope I didnt mis-hear the report, the guy has a very gruff voice, I really hope I heard it correctly.. no ill will intended here at all fellas..

They seem to talk about it on the :30 and :00 marks on the radio... I must have misunderstood, there would be coverage elsewhere for sure.. damn!

Sorry guys.. I jumped the gun, I was so happy.. my bad* (I think)

Wasn't the guy they found clinging to the outboard motor, which was still attached to the boat? Guessing you heard it wrong.

I don't believe that boat is manufactured with an option for dual outboards and the pic clearly shows the survivor clinging to an engine. It will be interesting to see why they were anchored. Engine swamped, mechanical difficulty. Hopefully they still weren't fishing when the rollers started coming in.

Highly doubtful a 20foot boat has 2 engines. Usually at this length, the 2nd drive will be a small kicker motor. But, regardless, those sink as they are close to 100 lbs.

It's a miracle one of them made it. Best thing I've heard all day. It gives some hope the others may be found with a narrowed search.

I just talked to a buddy of mine who did 23 years in the coast guard. He said the coasties are just looking for bodies at this point -- the guys lost are completely dehydrated and gone if they've been drifting that long.

Said he's been out on a lot of missions like this and they never end well.

What a piece of work. These guys are, in all probability, dead and you want to make a joke about it?

Oh bs, that had to be a joke.

It wasnt a joke at all, I misunderstood the report, the report began speaking about the 3 men still missing then quickly went to the one clinging on the motor, I misheard the report. No harm was intented, and no joke at all was implied.

Of course it was. He probably is getting a kick out of how many people let that go right over their head.

I am not going to keep saying this.. I wasnt joking.. I misheard a report, while reading this thread and posted immediately... I was wrong, nowhere in any post was a joke, a punchline or ever a hint of sarcasm. I take this very seriously, I am a Water/Ice Rescuer technician in the fire department, I dont take this lightly at all... Sorry if I offended anyone.. peace, Rob

Hi. Is this the part of the thread where we overreact to someone's accidental incorrect information?

We passed that a few exits ago. Now, we're pretending to be offended by it.

not sure if it's any help or not, but I have a bit of experience w/ the ocean boating/fishing bit. i have a 17' center console boat that I used to take out off of the FL Atlantic coast, and I have many friends who routinely go across to the Bahamas - this is what I know from personal experience and from talking to all of them...

1. In my boat, I never go more than maybe 5 miles off shore. My boat simply isn't big enough, and I don't have enough engines to be comfortable with not seeing land. I would want at least two engines (in case one goes out, I could still limp back in), and min 23' to go out any distance. A 23' can make the 60 mile trek to the Bahamas, but anything smaller than that is crazy...asking for trouble. A couple of feet makes a huge difference in seaworthiness.

2. At the first sign of bad weather, I race back in. I do not want to be caught in a storm off shore. No way. Risking being caught in 7'+ waves is reckless, forget about 14'ers. The weather report forecast was good in the AM, but getting rough in the afternoon - you ALWAYS check the forecast before going out, but you also keep an eye on the sky - it's boater safety 101.

3. EPRB - If I were to be out where I couldn't see land, I'd have one. $600? no problem - that's money I'd spend for something I hope to never need. Hey - no one ever said boating was cheap. If you don't want to spend the cash to be safe about it, I've got a couple of nice piers I'd suggest fishing off of.

Now - I apologize in advance if I come off as condemning the victims - that's not what I'm trying to do here - I hope and pray that they are all found alive. However, there were some significant safety lapses, and it would be beneficial if we all can learn some things about off-shore safety.

Well said, moleculo. As a youngster, my dad and I went 20 mi offshore a couple times a year off the Louisiana coast in a 25' cuddy cab walk-around (bigger, heavier than a center console). If the forecast called for 4- or 5-foot seas or more for our fishing day, we'd postpone the trip. It's just too crazy to take that chance. And, as you said, if the weather gets ugly, anchor's up, trip's over.

Back on topic, Sal Paolantonio just came on ESPN from Tampa. The search continues. A good point he made is that Schuyler was brought to the hospital in serious condition suffering from exposure and hypothermia. His counterparts have been in the water (knock on wood) for 12 MORE hours than Schuyler. Not good news at all. Anyway, I hope a miracle happens, but I'm less and less optimistic with every passing minute.

I was hoping that they would find them before nightfall. Surviving another night will be very difficult. That would be 60-70 hours in the water by the morning. It is very frightening to even think about what these guys are going through. Being in the dark water all night, freezing, worried about shark attacks. Tough to even imagine.

Overreact? Offended? Look at you guys. All I did is call BS on someone believing that 3 guys were holding onto a FLOATING outboard. Who in their right mind thinks an engine floats? No offense webster, I guess you really did...

Well someone did ask if they could turn the boat back over after it capsized.

I know... and one with a Boston Whaler-like center console. Some astrology too. Good stuff.

I saw it mentioned earlier in the day that they all had on life preservers. Now I heard tonight that they aren't sure (ESPN).

Sad set of circumstances that they haven't been located yet knowing that the 4 were still together 10 hours prior to Schuyler's rescue.

I am guessing that some of them were too tough to wear life vests and the only survivor said they wearing them to "cover" for them - until they found the vests on the boat. Sad but true (maybe).

They found the vests on the boat?

IF they do indeed have vests on, why is is so hard to locate people out in the wide open ocean.

I'm not saying it would be easy, but if you have helicopters, and gps systems, how would it be next to impossible to find somebody out in the middle of nowhere?

And yes I know the ocean is big.

I wonder why they were even running out that far? Grouper season is over, so they were either fishing illegally or something else.
