Colonoscopy preparation today..... (2 Viewers)

Considering the miralax prep just to clean me out - how stupid of an idea is this?
go easy brohan if you are not backed up from something like narcos or whatever miralax can really do a number on you i had my hips replaced and it did a number on me even when i was on narcos and morphine so that is all i am saying take that to the bank
I'm only doing half the recommended dosage and over a longer period of time - I'll be fine, right? :oldunsure:
Whatever you do, just make sure that #### comes out of your ### like a firehose. If not, you're probably not cleaned out enough.
hard to say brohan that stuff hits everyone different but what i am saying is that when it works it really really works so dialing it back is a good idea take that to the bank
cowboy up and go mag cit and take that to the bank brohan.

So is 40 the new 50 for a colonoscopy? I turn 40 in January and had not considered this little gem.
I think it depends on who you ask and if you have family history. Most insurances companies say "no" before 50 but since I have it in my family my Dr. pushed back on the insurance and they relented. A coworker who had both parents die from colon cancer once told me "I don't know what I'm going to die from but I know what I'm not going to die from." That kind of sums it up. Not a real difficult procedure and eliminates (as much as possible) colon cancer from the equation.

Mine's Friday :X :toilet:
Good luck. I'm not 50 yet & already did it twice (colon cancer in the family). The prep is the biggest pain. The actual procedure is a walk in the park & you'll feel better for the piece of mind.
Limited my diet for 48 hours to liquid only for the most part (doc recommended 24 hours) and very little intake as much as possible. Hoping that minimizes the effects of the rear hydrant explosion.

I think a quote that sums up the prep was given to me by a friend of mine...just when you think there is no way you can go again you do...

Had mine done a couple months ago, put it off as long as I dared (53 at the time).

Prep >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> worse than the procedure, which involves some fat doctor sticking a camera on a water hose up your Hershey highway. Think about that.

Prep was pretty much "drink, poop, repeat" for 4 hours. You have no idea how much crap you have inside of you. It's astounding. Went from brown to bilious yellow green to clear to yellow green to a light yellow that Martha Stewart calls "Sunrise Over Gary Indiana" on her paint swatches. Last one was semi clear with a couple of things that looked like caraway seeds and a small Lego that had gone missing when I was 4.

Baby wipes. For the love of all things sacred, baby wipes. Regular toilet paper will have you hating life for three days.

Had them put me under while the procedure was being done. Lie on your side, count down from 100, and you don't remember a thing after 98. Nurse wakes you up and you truly believe in your grogginess that someone stuffed an Offenhauser up inside of you because you are farting like A J Foyt's Watson roadster at the Milwaukee Mile. Blaaat blat blat blat. You have a ton of air inside of you and it's going to come out the way it went in. Then the doctor comes in and hopefully you hear the magic words "clean save for a small hemorrhoid, see you in 10 years."

Have a friend drive you home. Do not attempt to drive.

Mom and Grandma had colon cancer. My mom is fine post a resection procedure she had several years ago, but I think literally the day I turned 40, she started asking me when I was going to schedule my procedure, which I scheduled several months later. No problem with insurance.

To be honest while the prep was unpleasant, I scheduled the procedure for a Monday. I started the prep Saturday night, my wife took our kids out of the house all Sunday and I watched football for 10 hours straight, when I wasn't in the bathroom. I was done with the procedure by 11 AM Monday.

Is it wrong to say that spending the whole day watching football drinking clear broth and lemon flavored "make you poop" solution in peace and quiet was more enjoyable than a day with two young children?

You'll be fine 3-4 hours after you get done. Honestly, I was fine when I walked out after a 1-2 hrs in the recovery room. I've had 2 of them, and worked both days from home in the afternoon.

See, this is where you are doing it wrong. You schedule it for a Friday. You come out a little groggy on Friday, and on Saturday you are still worn out. Don't screw it up by eating a bunch of stuff Saturday.

Then on Sunday, you tell the wife and kids: man, that anesthetic kicked my ###. I still feel worn down. Might try to eat some stuff today and just chill on the couch.

You get college football Saturday AND NFL Sunday. Small price to pay for having a tube shoved up your ### while you're sleeping.

Having had three of these (family history, so they started me in my 30's), I can definitely attest to "eating light" the day, or even two, before prep day. Soup, cereal, veggies... No heavy steaks, burgers, etc.

My first one, I went way overboard, stuffing myself the day before, capping it off w/ a big steak dinner. Made for a rough prep day.

Have you been tested for Lynch Syndrome?

This right here is the shark move. And you're only fibbing a little bit really.

And then your wife thinks you're a #####.I didn't need baby wipes, although I did have them just in case. I drove home too. That night was like any other Friday night, drinking and eating like usual.

Found three polyps, doc said they were of no concern, however, I do have to do this again in 5 years.

Highly Highly recommend adjusting your diet out an extra 18-24 hrs prior to your procedure if you can do it. I darn near went on a full fast on Wednesday. Took in no meat whatsever and limited diet to fruits and veggies and lots of water, other liquids that day. Full liquid diet the day before as doc directed. Do the miralax and Gatorade mix and drink lots of fluids. Very easy prep.

Easiest procedure Ive ever had. Counted backwards from 100, got to 98 and woke up in recovery. 2 hours total tops. No aftershocks (gas, bloated feeling some complain of) either.

Do it if you haven't already.

I don't get the need for an additional prep day. Is there an actual benefit?

It's all turning to liquid so I say live it up the day before the prep day. Maybe I'm wrong?

JD. thanks for bringing this up. My timeline is bad since I don't live where my parents do but came up to take care of them. Dad lived to 79 Mom to 71. Dad born 1934, Mom 1938. Think it was mid 2000's when dad had surgery for his and mom had hers in 2009 when she died. Dad lived to 2014. I have let my primary doctor and the one doing my colonoscopy know my history but they never asked about Lynch.

(Vikings had two punt returns when my dad was in the hospital, I just remember watching that when I was there with him. Was the only game on so not a Sunday afternoon)

Prep day itself is always bad. It's worse when your body has "live it up the day before" stuff to get rid of too.

I didn't change anything the day before and didn't find prep day to be that bad. It wasn't enjoyable but not the nightmare some make it out to be.

If I take my first prep laxative a 6pm. How long before I can feel comfortable to go to sleep tonight? TIA.
When is your last prep? I would guess a couple hours after that and your system should be empty. Don't sleep too far away from a toilet.
6 am tomorrow morning, procedure at 12:15pm.
So what is your prep schedule? When do you stop taking lax for the night?
All liquid today. Take first dose of lax tonight at 6pm, second lax at 6am. Do not have anything from 7:30 on.

Ok gotcha. My preps are usually doing the lax every half hour for about 3-4 hours. I'm usually completely done by around 8:00 and I take nothing after that until after the procedure. If your first prep is at 6 pm, I'd imagine you should be ok a few hours later. Your system will start clearing out pretty much immediately after you finish the prep.

Test results were negative but doctor said the type of polyps I have he likes to keep a close eye on. I go back in 3 years. Probably a good idea I didn't wait until 50 to get this done.

Had an excellent breakfast of white grape juice, big steaming bowl of chicken broth for lunch, now eagerly anticipating my dinner of hot beef broth. Kids are excited to have some jello with me for desert.

Had my 30th colonoscopy on Tuesday. My doctor retired and I went with a new guy this time. The prep he prefers is a 2-day prep where you're on a clear liquid diet as of noon two days before your test. I had no solid food from Sunday noon until after my test (Tuesday noon).

Combined with drinking some awesome Myrilax Sunday and Monday night, this prep sucked really hard.

I tried to schedule one today and founf out that the local medical group that controls about 90 percent of the gastro docs has decided they are not taking Blue Cross anymore. I called a couple of the independent doctors and they're booked until late January or early Feb. My company is switching to Aetna next year luckily.

My wife had one last Friday... I did the prep with her to support her. Turned out it was WAY worse than when I did it for my colonoscopy for some reason :X

you love your wife WAY more than I love mine. I can't wait until my wife needs one so I can eat in front of her while she's miserable.
