Colonoscopy preparation today..... (1 Viewer)

Looking for a little insight from those that have had a colonoscopy.  I have been having lingering abdominal pains for several months.  I spoke with a GI specialist on Friday and she has scheduled me for a colonoscopy as well as an endoscopy.  I am 51 and never had a colonoscopy, so I was due to have the procedure.  I am curious what to expect in the days leading up to the procedure as well as what I need to do to prepare for this procedure?
Google "gatorade/miralax colonoscopy prep" and then ask your doctor if you can do that.  It's a piece of cake.  Not as effective as the other preps but good enough.

Thanks for the input everyone.  Were you guys back at work the day after the procedure?  Tryign to give my boss a heads-up.
Yes - honestly you'll be pretty much fine a few hours after the procedure.  You'll be a little tired (and hungry) but definitely completely back to normal by the next day.

Too add: due to the abdominal pain my doctor is also doing an endoscopy procedure.  From that perspective it does not sound like I have ot do much in the way of prep for that procedure, but I will see how things work out.

Oooh, you get the daily double.  Lucky.

Been having stomach issues for the last 5 years or so, so I'm well versed in this stuff if you have any questions.

And yeah, you don't have to do anything for that one.

how much weight do you lose doing this prep?  Thinking it might be a great way to jump start a diet... that and I am over 50 so I probably ought to do this.......... :bag:

I  went to my GI doc today and am scheduled for a colonoscopy in two weeks.   It’s been three years since the last one.  My plan for this one is to start altering my diet a day earlier by eating very  light.   I go frequently and doing the prep is like throwing gas on a fire. I typically feel like I need to go right up to the procedure even though I have been empty for many hours.  Maybe with less food in my system, the prep day won’t be as awful.

The procedure day is easy.  Get put under.  Have procedure. Wake up.  Eat on the way home. Nap.   Good to go by dinner.

Like others have said, do the prep exactly as prescribed.  Definitely get baby wipes since you will be going to the bathroom a lot, unless you want a sore bottom.

The day of the procedure is easy.  They knock you out (you are out in an instant) and then you wake up and it's over.  Eat a nice meal and then be lazy the rest of the day.  My only worry the day of was the fear that I'd still be hitting the bathroom every 15 minutes when I had to make the drive to get it done, as going for me lingered well into the next morning, but fortunately it calmed down right before I had to leave.

I shoulda listened to this guy.  All went well with mine prep and results-wise.   Prep wasn't fun - fasting wasn't as bad as I thought, liquid prep wasn't horrible but wasn't good either, but my ###hole though.  oof.   Wiping about 10 times per hr for 5 to 6 hours.

For my latest colonoscopy, tho only opening was at 6:30 am.
Just booked mine for January. Chose the 6:30 time. That’s just to arrive. By the time they do everything it’s an hour before you’re wheeled in anyway. And research proves you never want a procedure in the afternoon. Everything in the am when Providers are sharp.

Just make sure they don't use the same tube for both procedures...

Procedure is Tuesday @ 2pm. Prep starts tomorrow at 3pm. 1x 10oz Magnesium Citrate (I got lemon instead of grape or cherry), water chaser in same bottle after 20 mins and then again after another 20mins. Rinse repeat at 8pm.

Only liquids drinkable through a straw. But fortunately coffee (no milk) is ok. Nothing within 4 hours of the procedure.

Anybody do this same prep? Seems like the gatorade and miralax is the go-to. Wondering how this will go. I'll see if I'm up (or down) for a play by play.

Also...I'll ask in the 10k thread as well, but how soon before I can get out running after the procedure? Was thinking about running the morning of, but that will be after my prep...not sure I can handle that kind of bear attack.

It's an astringent that greatly reduces the discomfort that happens after continuous discharge of stomach acid and bile that greatly irritates that sensitive reggion

I used to use it as an astringent post-shaving, to close up the pores. I'm still not totally getting what that does for my butt and taint.  But I'll be fountains of wayne later today, so maybe it will be clearer then.

I would NOT exercise the morning of. Even if you didn't need a bathroom urgently,  the bigger issue is that you're already going to feel slightly dehydrated from the prep.

The following day should be fine but you might want to wait until afternoon/evening.

Round 1 consumed.

That prep is pretty awesome when it's over, and you find out you lost 3-4 pounds. That's when you realize:

" I guess I AM full of ####."

52 and will be scheduling mine just after the first of the year.  When I turned 50 my doc just had me send some poop through the mail initially and test came back negative, no signs.  But I need to have the actual test done.

Glad my colonoscopy is behind me.  My prep went as awful as ever.   I was crapping water right before the procedure and a few times after.   Good luck to you guys that have this coming.

Posted this in the kids say stupid #### thread...

Came home from work early today to start prepping for my colonoscopy tomorrow. Explained the whole liquid only, magnesium citrate prep to the kids, and that there will be pooping.

13yo floppinho... So you can have pudding.

???... liquid only, bub. I have to be able drink it through a straw.

Inho.... You could drink pudding through a straw if you wanted to badly enough.

And every few minutes since...

...are you pooping?

I'm 46, I did mine at 43/44 because I have cancer that runs in the family and I wanted to be proactive.

When i was a kid I heard the late Dennis Woflberg do a bit about having the Chrysler Building crammed up his ### when they did a Rigid something or other...

-They gave me a little shot of something that knocked me out, I was wheeled into a room so white and clean you woulda thought you were being brought before the Almighty, that's about when I slipped into one of the best 45-60 Minute naps you have ever had, felt nothing when I woke up adn the two nurses surrounding my bed and working on me just smiled and said I didn't need another one of these before I turn 50.

It really made me want to go out and rededicate myself to health and that's when i started playing Tennis a lot more and started eating a little better etc...

Just Do It, whatever you are going to face it's better to know than keep yourself in the dark. I know my father waited too long to be proactive. I will not make the same mistake, learn from those who came and went before you.

The worst part is the many trips to the throne before you go and have the procedure done but I want every man who has this done to realize the amount of fecal matter impacting your bowels...that empty feeling you have after you leave the doctor...think twice before you grab a juicy red hamburger and start repacking your bowels with wretchedness.

It's like getting a free enema, you are so clean right now after the procedure, great time to be a Vegan for a week and see what happens. Try it for just a day, at least stick to fish and chicken for a while.

Cheers!

Yeah. When I did my first one of these 25 years ago, I had to prep with an enema. Ultimately, I don't think it flushed me out as much as the magnesium citrate I took yesterday (which I had to pay a few bucks for, so not literally free).

I've done the master cleanse thing a few times, where you only consume this water, lemon, cayenne pepper, maple syrup concoction for 10 days. It never gave me the immediate and direct flushing part that this did, but I think the end game is similar.

I don't know if there are any negative health ramifications to the mag citrate, but I could see doing that once every now and then to flush the system (instead of a liquid only 10 day fast). As you say, it seems intuitively like a good thing for the body.

Anybody know more about the relative health benefits of this?

Pretty sure I did the same with magCit, insta flush for sure, I could never do it the way you did with the 3-5 days cleanse/fast, 10 days etc...but the way they empty you out before the procedure for the colonoscopy, I never thought about doing it once a year or every couple years but I guess you could. I've tried to take a proactive approach but there's no doubt drinking one of those concoctions would clear 5 lbs out of me in an instant.

Waiting on doc.

And maybe the wife will pick up the phone and show up. Busy crazy day for her with me or of commission... Soon taking isee private school test and daughter has her first day back in school after a while... She's had to run all over there city.

First off...how is your colon?
Magical. Like bartolo. Or Willie.

Eta... Waiting to hear from doc. But I'm guessing since they finished in less than 45, that thinks are ok. I'd figure it would take longer if they found stuff.

Doc says still a bunch of poo in there, did their best to clear me out but not fully clear for review  . But what they saw was clean. No polyps. Have to go back next year as a result of the poo.
