Love this stuff! :towelwave: The Bengals would have beaten the Steelers if Palmer weren't injured (lost by 14). The Seahawks would have beaten the Steelers if it weren't for the referees (lost by 11). Now this...

Colts assistant: 'Let's go play again'

By Mike Prisuta

TRIBUNE-REVIEW

The war of words between the Steelers and Colts has resumed, and this time it's the Colts who have fired the opening salvo.

"I'm very respectful of the Pittsburgh Steelers," Indianapolis offensive line coach Howard Mudd said in Tuesday's editions of The Indianapolis Star. "They won. They are the champions, and I respect them. But the Pittsburgh Steelers did not beat the Colts. The Colts beat the Colts.

"Let's go play again. Right now."

Mudd's comments were published seven months to the day after the Steelers beat the Colts, 21-18, in an AFC divisional playoff game in Indianapolis.

The Colts surrendered five sacks in the loss, which tied the career-high in quarterback Peyton Manning's 137-game NFL tenure, after allowing a league-low 20 during the regular season.

Mudd blamed his offensive line.

"We stunk the joint up," Mudd told the Star. "We were awful.

"I cannot explain it. It defies reason. You can take three years' worth of bad games and put them together and that's about what we performed like, except we did it all in one game."

Steelers linebacker Joey Porter, who stirred the pot in advance of last January's Colts-Steelers rematch by insisting Indianapolis was a finesse team and that the Steelers were the more physical of the two, bolted the practice field at St. Vincent College yesterday before Mudd's comments could be relayed.

Linebacker Larry Foote filled in for Porter in issuing a response.

"He said we didn't beat them?" Foote said. "What happened on the defensive side of the ball, when our offense was driving up and down the field on them? He didn't say anything about the interception we had (by strong safety Troy Polamalu) that the referees called back?

"Tell him they were outcoached."

Steelers defensive end Brett Keisel got a hearty chuckle out of Mudd's assessment.

"That's fine with us," Keisel said. "We're not worried about the Colts. They got out-played, they got beat, we won the Super Bowl. That's all there is to it.

"I think they're still mad about that loss. The refs almost gave it back to them with Troy's call (on the interception that wasn't after further review) so they have nothing to cry about."

Keisel also endorsed Foote's "outcoached" theory, giving much of the credit to Steelers defensive coordinator #### LeBeau.

"I think our game plan going into that last game was much better than the first game," he said, recalling a 26-7 Colts win over the Steelers on Nov. 28 in Indy. "We had some blitzes that they didn't have any answers for, and it showed up.

"Coach LeBeau is a wizard. That's what he does, and that's why he's been in the league as long as he has. We all ride with him. Whatever he calls, we'll run it."

Keisel also found Mudd's challenge for a rematch, "right now," appealing.

"I'll play anyone right now," he said. "Let's just play. Let's get out of Latrobe."

Head coach Bill Cowher, who coached with Mudd in Cleveland (1986-88) and Kansas City (1989-91) under Marty Schottenheimer, didn't mind the idea of another showdown with the Colts.

"If we play again, it'll be in the playoffs," Cowher said. "It'll be do-or-die again, because they're not on our schedule.

"If it happens, it happens."

still can't believe that schmuck cut back to the middle of the field on the return after Bettis' fumble.

This article just reminded me that the Marty Schottenheimer coaching tree has actually been more successful than the Joe Gibbs coaching tree.

Also, Mudd's just a sore loser.

Edit: I was resisting the temptation to put an "As for Howard... as far as I'm concerned, his name is Mudd" joke... but I can't resist any longer. :)

Frenchy, It doesn't stop there...The Steelers don't deserve SB IX because the Raiders relaxed after defeating the 2-time defending champ Dolphins the week before the AFC Championship.

The Steelers don't deserve SB X because the Raiders claim the Steelers watered down the field prior to the AFC Championship.

The Steelers didn't really beat the Cowboys in SB XIII. Roger Staubach still blames the official who called PI on Bennie Barnes and Jackie ("the sickest man in America") Smith.

Finally, the Steelers don't deserve SB XIV because Mike Renfro was ruled out of bounds on a potential game-tying reception in the 4th quarter of the AFC Championship.

Face it, the Steelers don't own any legitimate SB championships. It's all a big NFL conspiracy to promote the Steelers in the mega-media capital that is Pittsburgh.

One more thing: :towelwave:

and if the refs got the call right regarding polamalu's ( sp?) int, it would never have come down to a missed FG and/or an openfield tackle by Big Ben..its all sour grapes with these Indy coaches. they need to look at themselves and how they've consistently choked in big playoff games over the years, they haven't won squat but somehow we consider them a 'great' team?! cmon. the words 'Paper Tiger' were never more fitting for a pro sports team..

Mudd shouldn't have said that. However, to be fair, most times when one good team beats another good team, the assessment from the losing team is that "we didn't play our best."

Here we go again...

I just with all of the boasting and trash talking was gone from this board!

The Steelers won, they were the better team that day, period.

Why is this post in the Shark Pool?

To a large extent I think that's true, but so what? It's still a loss.
"Tell him they were outcoached."
Yep. And Manning shares part of that blame since he decides the final off. play ultimately.

Mudd shouldn't have said that. However, to be fair, most times when one good team beats another good team, the assessment from the losing team is that "we didn't play our best."
 I remember the Steelers (specifically Kordell Stewart) saying "the better team didn't win" after losing to the Patriots in the 2001 AFC Championship Game. I didn't see any point to it then and I don't see any point to it now. I guess it makes them feel better but to me it just shows you are a whiny tool.

What's next? The Denver waterboy is gonna make a statement? Note to Colts: you wanna make a challenge to the WORLD CHAMPIONS, don't send one of your second rate goons to do it!

Step up to the plate, Coach Dungy, or keep your mongrels muzzled, as they should be.

HERE WE GO STEELERS, HERE WE GO!

Please don't use "cut" when referring to Nick Harper. He is sensitive about that.Seriously, the Steelers should have given Daniell Harper a player's game check for what she did to her husband the night before that game.

I will believe until the day I die that Vanderjagt missed that kick on purpose just to say FU to Manning.
I heard NASA lost the tape of that game, so if you have a recording, hold onto it. Shold be worth beaucoup bucks someday. If you're at a loss for where to store your copy, the Trilateral commission has a nice bunker with some extra space.

The Seahawks would have beaten the Steelers if it weren't for the referees (lost by 11).
Well that's a given and it's universally accepted (except for Steelers fans) that the refs are the biggest reasons why the Steelers won* the Superbowl.
:lmao: No, what's universally accepted by everyone, including Steelers fans, is that the judgement calls made by the referees had an impact on the game. It's been well documented how many other factors contributed to the game and how many mistakes were made by both teams. The Steelers just happened to make a few big plays without committing penalties. Can this stuff die already? As for the Colts coach's comments, who cares? IF Polamalu's INT had been called correctly, IF Bettis didn't fumble, IF Harper runs to the outside, IF Vanderjagt makes the kick... who cares? Like it was mentioned earlier, Kordell Stewart did the same freaking thing years ago, the losers in big games say this kind of stuff all the time, and it's always pretty lame.

The Steelers purposely sent kimo to dive on Palmers leg, if it wernt for that, we would have beaten them, just like we did in Pittsburgh. Ben is a choker and liar and he'll never be 1/2 a Palmer. He'll be remembered as a Dilfer esk QB who didnt really play a big part in the SB.

Why do people ever get caught saying this stuff? Honestly, has there ever been a case in any event where the person on the losing side made a comment of this regard and the victor replied, "you know something? He's right. MAN! We got so lucky that day...no way did we deserve to win. They are clearly the better team..."

I'll bite. :fishy: I've been waiting for the right time to post this. Whining more than 6 months after the game sounds like the time has come.If you truly believe "it's universally accepted" that fans and sportswriters believe that SB XL was given to the Steelers by the referees, then nothing I say will change your mind. However, you're disregarding the FINAL numbers on the ESPN poll (not the backlash that was seen by angry Seattle fans the first day or two after the game). LINK As you can see, only 32% of the respondents claim the calls were the biggest factor in the game. As for media, you can post several articles backing your claim and I can post the same number citing the reverse. Proves nothing either way.

What I find most illuminating is the 40 or so FBGs with 16 different favorite NFL teams -- i.e., NOT Steeler fans --who joined Steeler fans in defending the officiating in full or in part. Check the thread for yourself and see what you think concerning:

roadkill 1292, Sideline Merc (Ravens)

Bears Man 2, GRIDIRON ASSASSIN, boubucarow (Bears)

BigRed (Colts)

Pony Boy, Shredhead, Elway Lives (Broncos)

j3r3m3y (Dolphins)

biglare66, Chaos Commish, B-Deep (Cowboys) – probably also Darth Chaney

Scott72, vitaflo, Ditkaless Wonders, Snorlax (Packers)

Mik789fl (Giants)

Nerangers, KitFisto, zoni, ChromeWeasel, PMENFAN (Patriots) – probably also thorn2000

Preacher1 (Vikings)

Sinrman, TwinTurbo, Spartans Rule, steviey (Lions)

tattoofan (Texans)

massraider (Raiders)

stbugs (Redskins)

footballhead (Chiefs)

Me & My Uncle (Eagles)

Additional members such as Keys Myaths, Men-in-Cleats, fruity pebbles, Just Win Baby, Cal Bear, pettifogger, Challenge Everything made similar posts, but I do not know their favorite team.

I won't guess as to your motivation in trying to disparage the Steelers and their fans. However, based on the fact that 68% of the nation and FBGs with 16 other favorite NFL teams felt the officiating was not exceptionally noteworthy, you might need to try another approach. Either that, or "universally accepted" doesn't mean what you think it does.

Like the "liar" part. Quality stuff, here. Also, the Steelers have had that plan in their defensive playbook for years. Thankfully, they used it at just the right time; after all, they knew Kimo would leave in free agency.

...and they would lose again because the Colts O-line can't handle a pass rush. Peyton would be on his back most of the game again. Mess with the bull, ya get the horns!

Colts shouldn't go stoking the fire.

Even if you can't punctuate, I'm inclined to give you a mulligan on that one. Let's move on then to the other proven facts you state concerning Ben as a choker and most importantly "The Steelers purposely sent kimo to dive on Palmers leg" (sic).

Welcome to Patriots fans world, bro. Hard for me to sympathize with you, however, considering all the crap the Pats took.

Simple fact remains, every time I go to Gillette, I look up at 3 Super Bowl banners, and no whiney baby can take that away.

Enjoy your victory.

The Colts are better than the Steelers, no doubt about it. But you get no points for choking in the game that matters the most.

The Seattle has more legit claim to to call themselve the beter team. Clearly, the NFL and refs want to give Rooney a parting present before he kicks the buckett.

:fishing:

:suds: :hifive: Thanks. Sad to see how sportsmanship is all but dead. There's always an excuse, and usually more than one...

There is not a doubt in my mind that the Choke On Live Television Squad was the best team during the regular season in 2005.

Well, Rooflesburger is a liar. Remember a year ago when there was a big to-do about Rooflesburger riding motorcycles after Private First Class Kellen Winslow The Second got himself all torn up on one? Remember what Rooflesburger said to ease the Pittsburgh fans' minds? He said that he rides Harleys and Choppers, not those insanely dangerous crotch rockets. He said that he rides with a group of friends, never alone. He said that he doesn't ride at night. He said that he always wears a helmet. And then he got in an accident on a crotch rocket while riding alone at night without a helmet. At this point I begin to question... is his name really even Ben?

1) He didn't own the bike on which he wrecked when he made that statement, it was payment for some appearances he made in the off-season.2) He wasn't joy-riding, he was on his way to the Steelers practice facilities. So I'm not sure how the statement about riding in a group or alone is relevant.3) It wasn't at night, it was in the morning.4) Ben NEVER said that he always wears a helmet. As a matter of fact, he's always said the opposite. So pretty much your whole post is :bs:

How did that bait taste?Honest to Christ, why do you guys even bother responding to some of this?

:goodposting: Why is it that whenever the Colts lose to the eventual Super Bowl Champions (Patriots/Steelers) they always whine about how they beat themselves and that the winner of the game didn't really win?

They should stop being selfish and realize that the Steelers and Patriots beat down on other teams during their run to the title as well ;)

I would have thought that the last sentence and the "Rooflesburger"s would have made that painfully obvious. :)I was trying to poke some fun at the guy who called Roethlisberger a liar. Sorry if I made it too subtle for my own good. I have a habit of being far too impressed with my own cleverness.
