Colts to rest starters last 2 games if homefield clinched early (1 Viewer)

The Colts plan to rest their starters in the final game or two of the season if they clinch homefield advantage early. Here we go again. Peyton Manning, Marvin Harrison, and Reggie Wayne owners should be pulling hard for the Colts to start losing some games. They face Dallas and Philadelphia the next two weeks.Source: ESPN.com Insider

If they're undefeated, I don't buy it.

Teams that rest their players aren't playoff ready if you ask me.

The Steelers had to win all their games last year to make the playoffs. How did they do?

Meanwhile the Bears and Colts were resting their players.

dumb move. They'll have plenty of time to rest after they get thumped in their first playoff game.

Seems awfully early for the Colts to be discussing this. I'd expect the AFC West winner to have no more than 4 losses...the Colts still play at Dallas, at Jax, Philly and Cincy. If they're undefeated not likely to sit guys week 16-17. If they have a loss they're likely to at least need a win in week 16 to clinch homefield.

and if they clinch the #1 or #2 seed they'll have a week to rest their starters during the Wildcards. If Dungy is smart, the starters play the whole game week 16 and the first half week 17. Then pull 'em.

And that's really the point isn't it? ESPN Insider?? What the crap is that? Show me a quote straight from Dungy or Polian or I am not buying it. First, they wouldn't even be wasting the time to think about it at this point of the season. Second, I would seriously doubt they handle the situation the same way as last year, given the result. This is a nonstory IMO. Just some scrub reporter trying to get his ink seen and talked about.

"insider"? LOL, damn, some of you guys would bite on anything. Hell, I could throw my line in the Shark Pool without any bait and catch some of you guys. No way in hell would the Colts be talking about something like that at this stage of the season.

Agreed. I have insider and haven't even seen anything about it.And if it is on there, it is pure ESPN garbage.

True or not, just the prospect of this happening is the main reason I haven't moved Rhodes yet. We have a week 17 title game. I suspect that Addai will come up with something or other on his body which is "nagging" him, and he'll get some rest in the last couple of weeks to "heal" it.

I'd listen to djColts, LGOA, or JohnnyU before I'd listen to ESPN Insider!

No direct quotes, who are they hinting said that at week 10 of the NFL season?

Just plain silly!

Not a bad move at all....one of the reasons I picked up Stokely.

ESPN sinks lower by the week. The fact that anyone pays for the "Insider" service is terribly alarming. They have become the National Enquirer of sports reporting, and as a true pioneer in the field it's pathetically sad how bad greed has decimated the quality of their journalistic integrity.

This is an absolute non-story. No member of the Colts has even pondered going undefeated, nor have any of them so much as pondered a sweet Week 16-17 spa break. This is pathetic.

I think this will be an internal debate between Polian and Dungy for what they would do if this turns out to be an issue. Polian would want to rest starters as much as possible, because he believes that an injury to Cornelius Bennett in a meaningless game against Buffalo cost the Colts a win against the Titans in the divisional round game in 2000 (1999 season). I think Dungy would want to play players to have them be less rusty for the playoffs. I hope Dungy wins this debate.

And what do you expect from Stokely if Sorgi is throwing him the ball?

Right there with you, brother. No better time now than to plan against how the Colts have played it the last two years...

a decent alternative to Harrison. If you got room on your bench worth a flyer IMO

Harrison for 3 drives with Peyton > Stokely for 3 quarters with Sorgi.

INDIANAPOLIS--After edging the Bills on Sunday 17-16, the Indianapolis Colts are once again peaking at the right time: the middle of the regular season. The Colts are the last remaining undefeated team in the NFL, just like they were last year at this time, when they finished 14-2 and lost in the first round of the playoffs.“Once again, we are hitting out stride at the best possible time,” said quarterback Peyton Manning. “We had a little squeaker today against the Bills, but that’s okay because we just keep winning. They don’t have to be pretty. We had control of this game from the first quarter on. You know why? Because it’s November, and that’s Colts time.“When the leaves change colors and there’s a chill in the air and everybody’s getting ready for Thanksgiving, we’re unbeatable. Right around mid-January, when the leaves are gone and everybody’s getting ready for President ’s Day, we’re wondering why we didn’t shore up our run defense when we had a chance.”Manning and the Colts have won three straight division titles and are cruising toward their fourth. Huge road victories over the Denver Broncos and New England Patriots have cemented their reputation as kings of the regular season.“We’ve met every challenge the first half of this season and won every game,” said receiver Reggie Wayne. “And just to show we weren’t soft, we went into Denver and Foxboro and kicked their asses all over the place. Of course, the season’s not over yet, but it’s good to know that we’re 9-0 anyway. Last year we got to 13-0. I'll always remember that, because it was the highlight of the season.”The only weakness for the Colts, if you could call it that, is their rushing defense. The Colts are currently allowing 165 yards per game on the ground, good for last in the NFL. The defense, however, says that statistic is misleading.“That’s a big number, but I still think we’re pretty good at stopping the run,” said defensive end Dwight Freeney. “It’s just that sometimes we’re caught in the wrong formation or we let up big plays. It doesn’t matter anyway, because we have Peyton Manning to compensate for us. Whenever we need a big play, he gives us one…during the regular season. In the playoffs we have to fend for ourselves, which isn’t always pretty. They say good defense wins in the playoffs and, um, well, that’s kind of why we’re a great regular season team.”

So the Broncos kicked the Colts' asses around just a little bit less in that game?

I fell for that one. :wall:

:goodposting: Don't you guys know by now that on a slow day ESPN creates its own news?

we all know that the espn story was premature, but seriously, what are the chances that manning, harrison and wayne are sat down in week 16 again?? last year against the seahawks, manning had 116 yards and 0 td's, harrison had absolutely nothing, and wayne had 21 yards and 0 td's.

after what happened in the playoffs last year, you'd think that they would handle it differently this year. but if i make it to my superbowl, i don't think i can afford to have my top WR (wayne) get me 2.1 points. i'm actually considering trading wayne this week for driver plus some some free agency bid money. green bay plays detroit and minnesota in weeks 15 and 16, while the colts play cincinnati and houston. i'd love to have wayne vs. houston in a normal situation where you know he is going to play, but i'm definitely concerned that he'll be taking an early seat on the bench.

what do people think?

I actually didn't pursue Manning recently just because I looked at the schedules for the contenders, and to me it seems like Indy could easily clinch with 3 or 2 weeks left. They have the easiest schedule of all of the contenders. They also have wins over Denver and NE. Baltimore and San Diego are the only two threats that are within 2 games and SD has 2 games against Denver in the next 4 weeks and Baltimore plays Atlanta, Pittsburgh, @Cincy and @KC the next four weeks. If San Diego loses at Denver and Indy wins the next two games (Dallas/Philly) then I would say that Indy has a very, very good chance of wrapping it all up with 3 weeks left. Not saying that it is a given, but just mentioning that if it happens, Indy is close to having home field wrapped up based on their remaining schedule. Not sure about any tie-breakers, so I don't know what would happen if say SD and Indy were both 14-2.The other note is that while this news is probably garbage, I also put about the same amount of faith in all the folks saying that they know exactly what the team will do if they have home field clinched. Maybe they will play, but how much? Sure, they lost in the first round, but to the team that ended up winning it all. It's too bad, because I think Indy would have won the Super Bowl if they had squeaked by Pittsburgh.

So with this possibility in mind, do people think I'm stupid to trade Wayne for Driver? Can Driver keep up his recent play, even if Jennings returns to full health?

"insider"? LOL, damn, some of you guys would bite on anything. Hell, I could throw my line in the Shark Pool without any bait and catch some of you guys. No way in hell would the Colts be talking about something like that at this stage of the season.
Actually Polian (FWIW) did talk about it a little while ago and apparently was emphatic that they would not rest starters.

Sounds good. It's fine to rest guys for Week 17, plus if they have the bye that's 2 weeks off. But to pull people week 16 too and have THREE weeks off, especially when the guys aren't even banged up, just seems too much.I think I'm going to try and keep Wayne for this weekend and see how he and Driver do, and then if I really want to do the trade, do it before the end of the Monday night game.

This probably could be in a thread of its own, but I read it today and found it interesting. From the NY Times football blog:

Taking Turns in Indianapolis

After he had 10 receptions for 138 yards and 3 touchdowns against Denver in Week 8, Indianapolis receiver Reggie Wayne, mindful of the Colts receivers’ competitiveness and Peyton Manning’s concern for keeping everyone involved, told Sports Illustrated: “Here’s some advice for the New England game: Don’t put me on your fantasy team.”

Sure enough, against the Patriots the next week, his fellow receiver Marvin Harrison had 8 receptions for 145 yards and 2 touchdowns. (Wayne’s performance wasn’t shabby: 6 catches for 90 yards, but no scores.)

So it was Wayne’s turn in Week 10, right? Sort of.

With the Colts’ offense slowed by the Bills, Wayne had 4 receptions for 42 yards and a touchdown. But that was twice the production of Harrison, who had 2 catches for 21 yards and did not score. So watch out for Harrison this week against the Cowboys.

Receptions/yards/TDs/100-yard receiving games

Marvin Harrison 54/719/5/3

Reggie Wayne 48/774/6/3

2005, through week 10

Harrison 58/666/8/3

Wayne 59/750/4/2

If this even/odd thing were to hold up, Wayne would be "the man" come week 16. I like the sound of that.

True or not, just the prospect of this happening is the main reason I haven't moved Rhodes yet. We have a week 17 title game. I suspect that Addai will come up with something or other on his body which is "nagging" him, and he'll get some rest in the last couple of weeks to "heal" it.
Bingo. Ditto.

The reality of this is it will depend on the situation when the Colts get there. Injuries could play a big role on who plays and for how long. IMO Starters should play like it is preseason couting backards. IE If they clinch Week 16, then Week 17 is played like it is preseason Week 4 (Starters play 1st quarter). If they clinch Week 15, Week 16 is like preaseason week 3 (Starters play 1st 3 quarters). Clinch Week 14=preseason week 2 (Starters play 1st half). But Tony Dungy isn't me. If they clinch, chances are he rests the starters he feels he needs to make it to the Superbowl. I doubt he feels Sorgi is going to deliver the goods. So Peyton probably sits. And if he pulls Peyton, does he let Harrison and Wayne go out there to get laid out by a high pass over the middle from Sorgi? Doubt it. Both probably hit the pine. All that is left are the RBs. Does he need one or both or neither? I would think neither, but probably Adidas more than Dusty. But I suspect he'll play both.Just my 2 cents -

Anyone have any data on teams that rest their starters for two regular season games or more and their corresponding playoff records?

Also, I don't buy this at all, since IND will probably clinch homefield in week 15.

Going undefeated is better than winning a Super Bowl. I hope Dungy and the rest of them sees that.

We all know that INDY should've learned from their mistakes. I can't imagine that in week 11, that anyone would be looking this far ahead. Espn.com Insider could be a friggin crack addict for all i know. WHY? WHY would anyone be saying this? One of the greatest quotes off all time apply to this topicMr. Madison (espn indsider), what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room(forum) is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Thought this was worthy of a bump. BAL's loss Thu. to CIN now leaves SD as the only team within a game of IND. Bottom line, we need SD to win in BUF Sun. and then home vs DEN and KC in order to force IND into playing their starters. Having said this, I feel unless any of @TEN, @JAX or CIN at home provides a Colt loss, I fear we will lose the IND studs for week 16. :wall:

Is Addai considered someone to be "rested"?My head says no but my gut says it'll be mostly Rhodes.

The way Addai has played recently I think he would surely be rested if IND has a 2 game lead. I'm pulling for SD to keep winning so Addai will play against HOU in week 16. SD needs to win out and either JAX or CIN needs to beat IND in order for this to happen IMO.

I guess we can put this to bed. They will be lucky to get HFA. Who wins the tiebreaker with SD? I hope the Colts have to play their starters every game from here on out. They will be a better team in the playoffs if that happens.

complete agreement - I think iot is good for the Colts and for fantasy players if there is no clinching in the AFC before week 17.
