Commish's Six Month...No Ten Month House REBUILD....and Now We're Moving (1 Viewer)

white washing the brick is fine. it's a known, established look- won't hurt you.

do you know why you guys are so off with the mortar color? bricks are tough- you can even use the exact same brand/color/model brick, but because the others have been aging/weathering the new ones will look off. usually easier to replace when there's a range of color tones in the existing. but mortar color should be a bit easier to get right.
You'd think.....when they were putting it up, I said immediately that it wasn't close, but they claimed it was because it was still wet. I needed to let it dry. Well, we did and it lightened a little bit, but not enough.

Doesn't really do the difference in color justice, but you can see it here. Also, you can see the door/window combo my wife settled on. Really liking how that came out even though they had to redo part of it a second time. We are now working on the internals. Wife has spent more time than I can count scouring the internet for idea. I think she's done a really good job picking the finishes. Will provide pics as they complete the work. We're now at a point where we're sitting back and watch all the planning become a reality.

Why is the work crew dumping the dirt in front of the front door? Seems like an odd choice where to put it.

Well, it's all gone now, but it was probably 15-20 feet out into the yard...optical illusion.

Not much, but I've been itching to help out. This is the main wall of my office. Went off a pic my wife gave me.
You did the wall and molding etc? Nice.
Yeah....the crown I left to the pros. I just didn't want to take the time to do it. It's something that always trips me up, but I did the molding there on that wall which was net new and I did the moldings in our dining room. No pics of that yet though.

Yea, I even the most simple molding I know I would end up wasting tons of material and taking 10 times longer than it should.

I thought you were doing this all yourself. I was super impressed. Now just regulary impressed :)

My Dad rebuilt our house by himself. He's looney

nice- looking good.

what's nutty (to me) is that when I do more traditional homes with panelling/etc- it's never good enough to surface mount some trim on the wall. nope. have to spend 100k+ to get it built-in with actual traditional panelling... even it's paint-grade. and then nobody- even my boss- notices. could save all that money almost every time and do it like you did- which looks great.

ha....no way. I don't do heights, so given the fact my entire roof was gone, doing it myself was a non-starter. There are still a couple projects I am going to do. I'm having part of the tree that caused this fiasco cut into lumber and am going to create a countertop and a mantle for my fireplace. The rest, I am leaving to the professionals. Thought about doing the tile work for the bathrooms, but in the interest of time, I'm handing that over too.

yeah, screw that. I was going to do that in the dining room. Have the chair rail, then make some panels out of mdf between the chair rail and the baseboard, but decided to do like I did in the office. There's really not that big a difference. You're just layering mdf on top of drywall....doesn't make any sense to me either especially if it's just going to be painted over anyway..

Yeah doing our roof was the first thing I ever did with him.

The professionals bring in a crane or have a fancy ladder.

You know how my dad got shingles on the roof. By my ### carrying them :)

Good luck!!!

There's stuff i know I can do but rarely do anymore like you mentioned, just not worth it anymore

We get our electricity back this week

Most of the painting is done.  Need to figure out the kitchen cabinets (rebuild the pieces that are jacked up or replace new).  Also need to put all the carpet and hardwood back in .  Once power is back, they can finish the tiling in the bathrooms.  In the past couple weeks, it got too cold to do tile work without power, so it's delayed us a bit.

So I did the design in my office and she painted it all the same color <_<

I AM digging the trim in our living room though and our stairs.

fwiw- I don't mind it all the same color, but yeah. oh well.
I guess I don't either.  It's just not what I expected, so it caught me off guard.  There's going go be a big hutch in the middle of that wall anyway.

We are back in the house!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We still have a ton of small "touch up" kinds of things and a good amount of our "stuff" to get through, but we can now live in our house.  It's been awesome the last couple of days.  I've learned a good bit from this, but the most is about my wife's design abilities.  She's done a wonderful job and I couldn't be happier with her choices.

Link to some of the rooms

To Dos:

1.  Touch up painting.

2.  Landscaping. (removal of all the construction debris, grading of the land, installation of sod/plants, installation of irrigation system etc)

3.  Creation of a "live edge" counter top for cabinets under out TV (made from the tree that fell on the house).

4.  Matching issue of brick to be resolved...it's just getting worse as the brick dries.

5.  My personal installation of "upgrade stuff" around the house...like an entire closet worth of clothing organizers.

I know there is more, but we are almost there and I don't really care how much more there is as long as we're back in the house.

love that you had fun with the bathroom tile.

eta: looks great, btw- nice job!

That's all my wife.  We took about two days walking through these two big tile stores in our area.  I picked things I liked (which were usually too masculine for her) and she figured out how to work the "feel" in.  She's really good at this stuff.  I'm blown away by her ability.  All the painters, inspectors, etc have said the same thing.  The inside of the house is her domain.  The outside is mine.

I'll do more pictures once we get more areas "completed"....working on the master closet right now.

Just a handful of things left....the brick is still unresolved.  Insurance is dragging their feet it seems.  We ended up having to have the skylights on our covered deck redone.  They got damaged somehow, so that's now on our plate.  We have gotten rid of the construction debris   and I now have a yard to mow again.  We will wait until the fall to do the planting of shrubs.  All the touch up painting is done so the big chore ahead of us is unpacking everything that was in storage and getting stuff back where it belongs.

They finally gave us permission to white wash the brick.  That's the last big ticket item.  We've made very little progress on the boxes :bag:   I freakin' HATE unpacking....everything in boxes has been that way for 8+ months and I haven't missed a single thing in those boxes.

get a storage unit... you know, so you can pay to not see the things you haven't missed or thought about.

good to hear things are almost all back to normal.

Sounds like a good time to do a yard sale and use one of those apps like letgo to get thin out that stuff.

It all just came back from a storage unit :oldunsure:

Two units actually....there's definitely some stuff we need to find, photos, kid toys etc, but I can't figure out what 90% of this "stuff" is.  I don't want to wait til our neighborhood yard sale in the fall, but that's where this seems to be headed.  I'd rather just donate it and get the larger benefit on my taxes :kicksrock:

Maybe the happy medium is to go through and the stuff you don't think you would get much for in a yard sale then donate right now. Hold some stuff you might get something for- in the meantime towards waiting on the neighborhood yard sale- use the selling aps like letgo for some of the stuff you should be able to sell.

Yeah....have a leather couch and an entertainment center (that will easily hold a 60+ inch TV that we want to sell....got new couches and the entertainment center is just freakin' big...maybe I'll put them on one of these apps.

The whitewashing has been going this week....I wasn't a fan initially, but it's beginning to look pretty good....much more excited today on Thursday than I was on Monday.  Will post some pics when they're done.

Thanks!

I was holding my breath all week.  This is a remarkably simple process these guys use.  They basically spray the house with a paint made to adhere to brick, let it dry, but not all the way, then blast it with a pressure washer.  They spend more time with the pressure washer than they do with the paint sprayer.  I'm pretty relieved.  About all that's left is the landscaping and unpacking boxes.

After all that.....we're moving :kicksrock:

Work has paid off though.  We have two offers on the house in the first week with a couple more likely to come.  Oddly enough, my largest concern in design choices (the whitewashing of the brick) is the part people love the most.  Didn't see that one coming.

Did the remodel make a profit for you?
Given that we didn't have to pay for it, I'd say yes.  I don't think there's a chance we'd have multiple offers at full ask within the first week without the remodel.  The best part for me was the feedback from the agents as to my wife's design choices.  They are glowing remarks all around.
