i do not think you could even call it a random draft if you set it a certain amount of time ahead of time becuase what is random about that i think you set it in chunks at random times before the draft so that people say man this realy is random because if you do not i can tell you this my main man confuscious says it does not matter how slow you go as long as you always go that pretty much sums this up brohans take that to the bank
If its live, you should do something fun besides pick numbers out of a hat. One year we had everyone pick mario kart characters and let the computer race to see where everyone placed. This also works for people not there in person, if they trust the league. Last year we set up 4 events (minute to win it challenges), combined the scores to determine the order. Again, have to trust that the person setup up the challenges hasn't practiced.
If its all online, I think you could do anytime prior to the day of the draft. However, not sure this is that big of a deal since most online drafts you join, you don't know where you are until 5 min before.
Suggestion: Poll the league and see what people prefer. Never hurts to ask.

this. we set ours a month or so in advance to allow teams to trade picks, players, and prepare. note that mine is a keeper league so that may be a slight difference.

man i read that some people play games and stuff that is just not random enough i think the best way would be to build a tumbler powered by a dodge hemi that spins lottery balls at nearly two hondo miles per hour and that needs to be bolted down to the steel superstructure of a factory operation and then you use that to pick random balls that are radomly assinged to league members based on random facts about them and then you use that to determine who gets to pick when so basically what i am saying is you game guys play a dungeons and dragon battle and talk about imaginary paladins and magic shields down in the basement with a plate of pizza rolls well i will be the guy with the fuel injected dodge hemi super tumbler that all the paper shakers are oohing and aahhing at take that to the bank randomly brohans

I gather the OP is referring to live online drafts.
The only league I regularly participate in that uses a random draft order is a live online re-draft league, where trading of picks is not permitted. There is about a 1/6th participation turnover year-to-year in this league. Commish generates a random draft order, via the league website, 24 hours prior to the draft.
Every live in-person re-draft leagues I've done in the past, we've drawn draft slots out of a hat at the draft, minutes before starting. Order for actually drawing out of the hat determined by last years standings, last place drawing first, and so on.

One simple way is just google "dice roller" and choose one. If you have a 12 team league, have it generate and mail to everyone in the league 12 different random numbers from 1-1000. Say in advance that the first number goes to team 1, second one to team 2, etc. Sort them and that's the draft order.

Depends on the league, some leagues warrant knowing ahead of time to better plan.
Dynasty startup I'm in this year just did the draft order, the draft will be the 24th however (already been several draft pick trades).
Both of my leagues, both redraft one of which is an auction will determine the order the day of the draft by lottery.
