2015 playoff teams got 22 of the 32 compensatory picks.

Some quick thoughts:

1. Compensation picks compensate teams that lost a lot of free agents. So if you lose a star player to free agency, you can sign a replacement, or get a 3rd round comp pick. Lesser players have lesser picks associated with them.

2. That 22 of the 32 comp picks went to playoff teams does not surprise me. It shows the best way to build a team is through draft picks, not signing more free agents than the next guy. Teams that draft well get good players inexpensively for 4 years. And if they leave after that, they get compensation draft picks.
