Consensus Top 300 Albums of All-Time: Taking lists of your 70 favorite albums until 7/1 (4 Viewers)

Were live releases allowed? This is going to make things difficult for me.

yes - though I don't recall any discussion of going the bootleg live performance route - but definitely "live" albums are allowed. It's a slight cheat code if you wanted to use it as a "kind of top hits" collection since those are NOT allowed (so long Squeeze "Singles")

I think the gist is if it was a commercially distributed live album it’s of but Grateful Dead live in Poughkeepsie Oct 3rd 1972 probably shouldn’t be included

Damn now there’s one I probably would have included on well

I asked and things like Instant Live, albums recorded by archivists, etc. are all allowed so I assume bootleg recordings would be as well. However, despite having 35 live albums on my list, I limited it to official recordings which were widely released by the artists.

Live albums are allowed - my preference is no “greatest hits” live albums and more time and place live albums (someone already mentioned Frampton Comes Alive and KISS Alive!) but I’m not policing it.

If people want to take some obscure “bootleg”, it’s not likely to make the top 300 anyway.

I know you’re probably half-joking, but they didn’t play in Poughkeepsie in 1972 - one could certainly make a case for Europe ‘72 here though.

I've trimmed it to about 10. All are commercially available (I stayed away from the bootleg type for the reason you mentioned).

The former consensus #1 has now dropped to #5

A new album takes over at #1 (without being ranked #1 by any submitter - but chose by 9 people)

A Rush album moves into the Top 40 (sorry haters :oldunsure: )

The band with the most different albums chosen is one which had it's own consensus countdown thread (for songs).

774 albums are now ranked - 564 of them only appear on one list

Wonder who this could be? I could try to guess, with a little help from my friends. Or maybe I should just let it be.

Help!
I was thinking Floyd

Zep
Stones?

The thing with Zep is they have six almost no-brainers (edit: although I think only 2 made my list), and two more that could also sneak in. The others have a strong 4-5. Zep simply have more classic "albums".

Are those the 4 that had their own countdown, or did i miss others?

Also, that could mean one person put in 7 albums, so it just takes one suprfan.

He's just showing off that he can spell "Poughkeepsie".

No way it’s zeppelin they are terrible

Floyd or Beatles imo I think Floyd though. much more diverse musical progression. Beatles were basically a boy band that started to rock out

Right, because everyone else here agrees with you on this…

I disagree with this take so much I don't even know where to start.
Bumping up my Beatles and Zeppelin selections to troll Lambskin…

Terrible probably isn’t fair to Zeppelin they were a talented group of musicians and one of the best at ripping off Blues artists, but I could easily live my life without ever hearing Robert Plant sing again

Beatles are fine i don’t really have anything bad to say about them but still a Boy Band IMO.

I wonder if I'd have a different takeaway if The Beatles catalog were as lean as Zep's.

Yea, maybe. Beatles definitely have more songs. But Zep's first 6 albums are all of the "classic" variety. 1-IV, Houses, Physical... I expect we'll see them all on this countdown. Presence and in/out... those are a solid maybe. I'm not sure we'll see six beatles or stones albums.

Beatles: Revolver, Pepper, White, Abbey, Let it Be... those I fully expect. Does Help, Rubber Soul, or MMT make it six or more? Maybe.

Stones: Beggers, Bleed, Sticky, Exile... Some Girls or Tattoo You maybe?

Floyd: Dark Side, Wish, Animals, The Wall... those make it. Meddle maybe?

It will be interesting to see how it all shakes out. Maybe I'm way off and "With the Beatles" (et al) ranks.

Was thinking about this a little while ago and I think that the bottom half of this will be much more interesting since we know the top 100 will be dominated by Zepplin and The Beatles and the like. I'm much more interested in the non chalk that will make this.

Right now from 160-300 there's a lot of albums that only appear on one list. Three people have listed an album as #1 overall (70 points) that no one else has listed and those three albums are still in the Top 160. Any album someone has picked in their Top 15 is holding onto the Top 300.

Yes, there is a lot of chalk in the Top 50/100 or so - lots of Beatles, Zeppelin, Floyd etc. - but there's also albums that don't generally show up on lists of top albums - and there's still intrigue as to which albums will finish Top 10.

Also there's a reason why chalk is chalk - the television list was much more chalkier (everyone knew what the Top 10 would be for the most part) which stands to reason since there's so so so many more albums than TV shows.

@John Maddens Lunchbox - this may encourage you to add a list.

Thanks for the shout out.
I think you will get a lot of last minute lists.
Looking forward to your rundown.

We are two weeks away from the submission deadline. Let's get some lists in.
You'll have one from me, but no promises when. Was on vacation 5/30-6/8, off site 3 days last week, 4 days this week, at least 3 days next, weekday evening baseball games, and (long) weekend's spent between golf, fundraisers, and lake living in between. Maybe I'll free up during next week's heat wave
