Continuous Rays thread: fun season (1 Viewer)

And now here's another losing streak.

I think the Sox are just the better team. Them going to LA and getting 2/3 while we just got blasted there was pretty telling. I guess September can change things but the Rays have been a yo-up all season.
Was thinking the same thing over the weekend about Boston...last night seals it. Another semi-successful year with an early playoff exit looking likely at this point.

Might be the end of the division race this weekend. Boston is going to slap the piss out of the White Sox and we begin a 10-day trip with ####ing Oakland.

At least football is back so I can divert my attention from this.

I want them to make the playoffs, because a crappy 83 wins Cardinals team won it all a few years ago.....but there is something to be said for being put out of your misery as well.

@RMooneyTBO: From notes: 7.9Rating of last nights Rays-Yankees game on Sun SportsNo. 1 in prime time last night beating out Survivor and Modern Family

This is why the team will never be moving.

Shame nobody ever reports on this kind of stuff and just harps on attendance.

Well that's 7.9 points better than what the Astros are currently pulling but still lower than the Tigers' average ratings.

Tigers have about a hundred years on the Rays.

Playing what amounts to a 3-game mini playoff series against an already God-awful Blue Jays team featuring a lineup they would be embarrassed to run out in spring training and here they are struggling.

Think I would have preferred this rather than getting my hopes up just to #### the bed again.

Good season, good team, not great. Kind of a bummer. Last two weeks were fun though.

Seems like they just can't get over the hump after 2008. Third time in a row they lost a division series. Hopefully they can do something this offseason to get them through that but I'm not sure how many strings they can pull. It's crazy with the starting pitching they've had they just can't win a playoff series anymore.

Oh well.

You have to wonder how long the Rays can continue to compete in the AL East against teams spending 2x-4x on their payrolls. Their farm system isn't as deep as it was a few years ago. They haven't picked near the top since they swung and missed on Tim Beckham five years ago. They won't be able to fleece Dayton Moore every winter.

The timing of the eventual move should be close to the depth wearing thin...so could change how the team is run financially to some degree.

Yea...it was a fun few weeks...slow start, scorching summer, the young pitching didn't hold it together, we found a star. Expectation was low this trip in, so no real pain.

Yea that's why seeing the season ends particularly sucks because it feels like this can't go on forever. But Myers and Longoria are still young and signed for a while and there is still premium pitching talent. I think they'll be competitive for a while still.

I think the huge question for the Rays is what they can get for David Price. They won't be able to afford him, and he would definitely get them a nice haul.

Wonder what team will make a play. Rangers? (Profar)

I'm not expecting it but I wouldn't be shocked if they give him the Longoria treatment either. Stu said they consider Price and Longo "Rays for life" whatever that means. And they have a little money coming off the books. And the two extra playoff games put some money in the bank.

More than anything though they want to win and I don't think that's a World Series staff without Price. Unless they get an unbelievable knock out offer for him.

I am assuming Price would command 18-20 million in the open market. Don't think the Rays can afford to pay both Longoria and Price that much and still surround them with a championship caliber team. I guess they can let him play out his deal, then get the draft picks when he walks.

The staff without Price isn't horrible at all:

Matt Moore

Chris Archer

Alex Cobb

That is a solid top 3. WIth potential to improve.

Jake Odorizzi and Alex Colome are close.

I think they need to improve the bullpen, and improve the offense. Trading Price should net them a blue chip, MLB ready bat, as well as other prospects. I am using Profar just as an example, but I think a core of Longoria, Myers, and Profar (under team control) is better for the Rays than keeping Price at an exorbitant salary.

Belated response, but is Profar the best fit? They need another big bat, and they still have Escobar and Lee at Durham.

If they move Price, they need to make damn sure it's a grand slam deal. I just don't see it happening. Maybe something with St. Louis.

Dejesus is coming back. I like the deal, but he's another low power guy. Good player to have though. I think this pretty much ensures Matt Joyce is either the full time DH, or dead to the team.

I think the Cards are more in the market for hitting than pitching. They have a glut of solid young pitchers to pair with Wainwright in Wacha, Lynn, Miller, Kelly, and Martinez.

I think getting a guy like Profar would be a great deal.

Well they took on money yesterday. Means two things:

A) they're saying #### it and going for the ring with everything they have

B) they made these trades anticipating the money saved with moving Price

I'm optimistic it's column A.

The Rays don't make "all in" plays. They can't afford to.

Hanigan is a fantastic defensive catcher. Obviously they think they can bring out the last bit of Heath Bell like they've seemed to do a hundred times before. I'd like to see them go after Moreland from Texas. Give up Lobaton+ probably.

I think they'll trade Price, but they don't get impatient. They'll wait for the right deal. If they don't get it they'll let him walk and take the picks.

@TBTimes_Rays: #Rays apparently got their man Loney back, per reports from @Buster_ESPN and @Ken_Rosenthal, at $21 million for 3 years

Surprising but very cool.

I winced when I saw that the Rays were considering bringing in Juan ####### Uribe in to be their 1B. Juan Uribe.

Good for both the Rays and Loney that they could agree to a deal. Seems like a good fit for both.

Where did you read that at? The Rays would never roster Juan Uribe. He's the complete opposite of everything they want in a player.

DeJesus

Jennings

Zobrist

Longoria

Myers

Loney

Joyce - DH

Hannigan

Escobar

Pretty good lineup. Let's get this thang started.

Do Rays fans want pitching or hitting for David Price? I like Longoria and Myers as the building blocks for the O. And Loney, Dejesus, and Zobrist are nice complimentary players. But I wonder if Jennings will ever reach his promise.

I just want the best players for Price. I guess prefer hitters since they generally seem less volatile but wouldn't take a lesser one instead of a better pitcher.

Jennings was worth 3.2 WAR last year and 3.3 in 2012. No complaints from me. He'll never be an MVP but he's a good player.

This is big. The other options available for first base are... not good.

Very happy to have Loney back.
