Continuous Rays thread: fun season (1 Viewer)

Last game I went to Price was on the mound. Going again tomorrow and Price will be on the mound. Should be a pretty small crowd with kids back in school. Looking forward to it believe it or not.

Betts

Bogarets

Nava

Cespedes

Craig

Checcini

Castillo

Brentz

Vazquez

Gave up more baserunners than outs recorded against that.

did the same.
I liked the match-up and had the innings, but he has not been the K guy he was earlier and I need Ks. Sat him, glad I did because I'd be out of first if I'd have started him. Brutal.

Overall some good things to see with him though, I think he got a little winded these last couple of weeks though. I have him at $2 in a keeper, he'll be on the short list for consideration.

Silverman is the team president/ part owner and apparently the guy who hired Friedman. Sounds like he was part of all baseball decisions so it shouldn't be a monumental drop-off.

@TBTimes_Rays: #Rays Maddon is signed thru '15, is "positive" there'll be talks on extension, says "no rush" +

"I don't really look to go anywhere else"

/breathes out

My mostly baseless speculation is that, considering Friedman is Sternbergs boy, he knows Stu is selling to Vinik so proactively moved on.

It was a fun run....
Such a shame they never finished the deal. Dammit.
That would have been the perfect ending.

Still...it coincided with a part of my life that was important...and I'll remember the Glory Days of CC, Longo, BJ, Zobrist, Pena, Shields, Price, Kaz, Garza, and Maddon and Freidman. Got to meet and hang out with them all...great group of guys.

Yea. It's hard to blame the guy. You put a successful program together, you have great teams and then you look up and see 9500 people there on a Tuesday night. I wouldn't want to be bothered with it either to be honest.

I wonder if everyone will still want them to move to Tampa if they start to suck again. They missed their opportunity to get a deal done IMO. Gotta strike while the iron is hot. Then again, if they suck attendance numbers will be even worse, so maybe it makes the move cries louder.

Sorry guys. Feel for you.

But I have to say, people have been amped for Martinez for years.

And hopefully Friedman's relationship with sternberg means he won't gut his lieutenants from the Tampa front office.

I just can't believe between Orlando and Tampa a park can't get built somewhere.

I'm really surprised to see Maddon go. His style/quirkiness is so suited to a smaller market/underdog team in my opinion. A lot of the things that made him so unique, costumes/pranks/gimmicks etc... seem tailored to that bringing in spare parts, giving guys 2nd chances etc... I could see him being a good coach in another small market, I just can't see Matt Kemp and Yasiel Puig (for example) being as on board with Maddon's style.

A park will get built I think but man this caught everybody off guard. Sucks. Most thought Joe would do 15-20 years here. He was so loved in the community. That's the real shame.

THAT ALL SAID.....the team did substantially disappoint this year. They were a universal World Series favorite and then won 77 games despite no injuries that they reasonably couldn't overcome (missing Myers and Moore may have subtracted 5 wins off the total...still not getting you home).

So maybe a change will be good, especially if it's Davey.

It's going to be hard for MLB teams to blackmail their current cities into stadium improvements if Montreal is the best that Sternberg can do. Baseball doesn't have a Seattle or LA that's an obvious destination for a relocating club.

Montreal doesn't have a stadium and has a population that's extremely unlikely to help pay for a new one. After that, there are a number of AAA cities of which Charlotte and Portland seem the most promising.

Tampa will eventually build a stadium for the Rays. They are about to quadruple their tv contract. They're not going anywhere.

Canadian dollar is very strong right now. Biggest hurdle in Montreal is a downtown parcel of land. They had one earmarked at one point and then it fell through. It's a tremendous city though and they came out strong for two exhibition games this year (yes SSS).

I think the rays are safe due to the jays territorial rights however. Unless baseball held a seat at the table for a new franchise Toronto currently gets all the national cable money and are Canada's team in that regard

The Jays don't hold any territorial rights over Montreal though.

If a team were to go to Montreal, TV would likely be a huge factor, and it would likely be Bell who would own the franchise/build the stadium. Right now Bell-owned TSN (Canada's leading sports channel since its inception) has nothing to show. The Jays are owned by Rogers who also own Rogers Sportsnet, who also signed a $5.2 billion deal to be the national channel for all NHL games. So with no hockey package, no Jays games, and only a half-share of Raptors and Canadian NHL teams regional broadcasts, they could using something to draw viewers.

Montreal taxpayers won't build a stadium, but the last 3 or 4 Canadian arenas built (hockey) were all done with private money, not tax $, so if they really want it to happen, there is precedent. For it to work in Montreal the stadium would need to be downtown.

I don't mean this for the Rays specifically, just giving an idea of how I see the situation in Montreal right now.

By the way, the Jays announced 2 exhibition home games in Montreal again for this season today, so the fans will get another chance to show they want a team.

I still think the Rays will still compete next year. Still have a very solid rotation, and maybe Will Myers stays healthy.

They were much better last year than their record, but the window is closing, and the farm is depleted. They'll suck again just in time for a new stadium.

The pitching is young, really good and locked up for a while so I don't think the window is closing. But I don't see where the offense is going to come from.

It's nice to have a 1B like Loney who can play such great D but his bat is a drag. Same with having Kiermaier playing in a corner spot. Need power there.

What I would like to see is for them to trade Jennings for prospects and then move Zobrist to RF, and Franklin to 2B. Get another bat in the lineup.

OF Myers - Kiermaier - Zobrist is good defensively and productive with the bat. Rodriguez and Franklin can platoon 2B.

Whichever ones you keep from the Guyer - Dejesus - Joyce trio can DH and be the 4th OF.

I'm just looking at stats and don't know anything about his D, but Justin Williams seems like a nice return for Hellickson. But I have a pretty low opinion of Hellickson.
