Continuous Rays thread: fun season (1 Viewer)

Capella, do you have any idea what is going on with the Rays closer situation? Do you think McGee has already overtaken Boxberger as closer? Is this a closer-by-committee situation? Right now, CloserMonkey is calling it a closer-by-committee led by Boxberger. Any feeling for how the team wants this situation to shake out?

It seems that when the uber tough righties come up, Box is in. Lefties, McGee. If Jepsen can handle it then McGee seems to be the closer.

It's a game to game thing.

Thanks for the insight. I was surprised to see Boxberger on the waiver wire this morning in one of my leagues, in which closers never get dropped. I know McGee has picked up some saves recently, but I didn't think Boxberger was completely out of the mix yet. I was able to scoop him up for a reasonable FAAB bid, so hopefully he can continue to hold down his role in the committee and get me some saves.

Moore comes back next Wednesday. Odorizzi the week after. Assuming no more deaths for a while that leaves us:

Archer

Moore

Odorizzi

Karns

Erasmo

Can win a lot of games with that set. Pushes Colome to the pen where he belongs. Hopefully he can become another late game power arm.

Pretty amazing Archer would have been considered the #3 starter on this team at the beginning of the season, and possibly the #4 had Moore been healthy.

It's a problem they'll likely have to address every season with this type of organizational model, however. Pitchers get hurt. It's inevitable.

Big game tonight.

Any cool Archer nicknames? Gateway to K...Archie Slider...come up with one I'll send you a shirt.

Kiermaier has a 3.7 WAR at the break with almost no offense. That's almost hard to believe. If he hit at all he would be one of the most valuable players in the game.

Eventually, this will again be a topic of conversation around here.

The average attendance at Tropicana Field remains below 15,000, putting the Rays in danger of being Major League Baseball's lowest-drawing team since the 2006 Marlins.

In many ways, it has become part of the franchise's identity. The Rays are known for pitching, a shrewd front office and a lack of fans in the seats.

And, yet, there are some other figures that should be included in this never-ending debate. Last week, the folks at Nielsen released TV ratings for all U.S. markets for the first half of the season, and the numbers in Tampa Bay are intriguing.

The Rays may be chasing the Yankees in the American League East, but they have beaten up on sitcoms, cop shows and reality TV.

Rays games are the No. 2-watched programming in Tampa Bay whenever they air in prime time on Sun Sports. Let that sink in. No. 2.

That means, on average, more people are watching Rays games than whatever NBC, ABC or Fox is showing in Tampa Bay. Only CBS affiliate WTSP has higher average prime-time ratings than Sun Sports, and the gap (4.56 to 4.29) is not terribly large.

The Rays are getting a higher percentage of TV viewers than the Yankees or Dodgers do in New York and Los Angeles. They get more total viewers than the White Sox in Chicago or the Braves in Atlanta.

This means the community that is routinely ridiculed nationally for a lack of fan support is actually getting more enviable TV numbers than bigger or more historic markets.

There are even more eyeballs tuned to Rays games than the first-place Nationals in Washington, D.C., and more than second-place teams in Houston and Minnesota.

I'm just as shocked as you are that this isn't being reported nationally like attendance is.

I'm in Davenport on vacation with the wife and kids. Thinking of going to Saturday's game vs. KC. Seats are dirt cheap pretty much, but where are the best seats value wise? I usually find that behind the plate in the upper deck offer the best bang for my buck at Yankee Stadium and Citi Field. Any advice from the locals would be great. Thanks.

Sorry. Rays' fans don't actually go to the games.

Pretty typical Rays trade. Two platoon candidates in Miller and Morrison and a broken reliever for Jim Hickey to fix.
I think Miller is going to be really good. Sizeable addition to the lineup.

Also sounds like they are trying to trade Loney, which I really hope happens. Would like to see Schaffer full-time at 1B.

Also, anybody notice the OF depth? Souza, KK, Mahtook, Guyer and Jennings? I bet they unload Jennings this winter as well.

BREAKING: #StPete council approves MOU, allows #Rays by 5-3 vote to look in #Tampa immediately.

Finally
Saw a tweet about them pursuing NJ today, which I don't think would happen but is the vote too little too late?
Rays President said on the radio this morning that they're looking at 6 or 7 years before anything is built. I don't know how the franchise can last that long. TV $$ I guess? They seem to be hanging on by a thread.
